I'm updating my review. I went to beer can island the summer of 2022 again.....there really isn't a beer can island left. It was very sad. It is still a beautiful and unique place to visit but not at all like it was.

So apparently there are 2 Beer Can Islands... one south of Tampa near Apollo Beach and the other is south of Bradenton/Coquina at the north tip of Longboat Key. I went to the latter near the Longboat Key Bridge and as u can see in my pics the historical signage near the bridge clearly states it as being 'Beer Can Island'. Will the real Beer Can Island please stand up! The most sought out places are the most difficult to get to. The old fallen trees give the area a unique look and feel unlike other beaches along the gulf, and the nearby wooded area is a change of pace.

Beer can island is awesome! It's one of the primary reasons why we moved to Apollo Beach. The island is 1.5 miles off of my boat dock and our kids love going there and hunting starfish and shells. It's more fun on the weekends but also more crowd. Dozens and dozens of boats will beach and anchor there put up tents and umbrellas and barbecue and just basically hang out. Rumor is beer can Island is privately owned and the person who owns it doesn't care if you party there. We have actually camped out there with campfire several times overnight. Labor Day, Fourth of July, Father's Day, and other weekends holidays are very popular. If you want to get a spot for your boat on one of these holidays I suggest showing up very early like eight or 9 AM. On the south east side of the island is a small cove with Deepwater where we pull up on our 32 foot express. We can basically beach the boat in that spot and still have plenty of water for the engines. When you're waiting around on the sandbar be sure to do the "stingray shuffle". Scoot your feet as you walk it's cooler to stingray to get out of your way so he won't step on them.

This tiny little island open to the public only by way of boat is a great place to pull right up into the sand hop out with your chairs, tents, large shade umbrellas, or whatever else you brought with you and hang out for a while and have a good time. There are usually maybe three to six other people on the island at the time. It is nice to walk around on the sandy beach area. You can also set up your tent and camp out for the night. It's just a great place to hang out and enjoy the view, and good friends, and just have a good time. It's also a fun little island to race jet skis around, just watch out for the sand bar.

Nice days get away. Small but work in progress. Will be interesting to see how it progresses.

Trash everywhere, people hiding in the bushes to hump, Do lines and some time fish. Used to come here with a past Lover to clean the beach or fish. No joke, its all we did. Lol No they have put even more funding into it. I understand why the banned the extra curricular activities. The Manatee sanctuary is literally right there across the water. Also locals don't respect the no wake zones n tourist want to ride the poor Manatees. Its wild as hell the huge foot print left by people n like angry parents. They took away our toys. Im actually glad. Look cleaner, healthier n its now heavy focus on family picnic not making them in the bushes ill stop lol joke aside, they opened up the property for picnics, can play a decent game of throw ball with yo kids. And cleaner trails. I did not see a grill anywhere n i must be blind cuz i cant see the bathrooms either. They added a watch tower in the middle. Keep on mind it is wheelchair accessible, so are the closer picnic areas. Cement goes away at the edge of the beach. Warning: Please bring a cooler, big sun hats, wear proper sun blocking and shoes that wont melt. The sand is paper white! It deflects the sun into you at almost full spectrum, ground gets dangerously hot. The trails are sketchy, bring water n maybe bring a buddy or protection. I did walked them almost all the way through but had to turn back cuz water. Its cute small trail. Gives nicer view of Teco facility n may see manatees. I seen Hares also n randomly snakes. No clue on gators. But it is Florida. Can see Down Town Tampa from Tower also! Ph yeah free parking! Update: yes theres bathroom!s

We were visiting in late January, so we weren't aiming to get into the water anyway, just enjoy the beach biome. This beach is quite close to the manatee viewing center and you're likely to see manatees here too as a result. I spotted a half dozen while here! Fair number of fishers here, as there are pipes to prop your rod in. Nice large parking area to accommodate visitors. Many picnic tables. An awesome (and accessible) viewing structure takes you up around fifty feet so you can look out with a 360 view! Bathrooms with running water available, no gender specified. (Love that!)

One of my favorite things about our little town is how everyone gathers here in the evenings to watch the sunset--it's such a beautiful, shared experience. The beach has clean bathrooms, a playground, a boat launch, and plenty of free parking, which makes it easy and family-friendly. They also host sunset movie nights, which I've heard are a must-do. Whether you're a local or just visiting, Sunset Beach is the perfect spot to slow down and soak it all in.

Families were enjoying the water, and they were even setting up for a wedding ceremony while I was there, which gave the beach a really warm, community feel. For me, though, I had the same experience I did at Robert K. Rees. As soon as I stepped into the water, I could feel a soft muddy layer mixed in with the sand under my feet. The water also looked like it had very little movement, almost as if it wasn't circulating much, which just wasn't appealing to me. I know plenty of people love this beach, and that's perfectly okay. It's simply not the kind of beach I'm searching for. I'm still on the hunt for those crystal-clear waters and firm, sandy bottom that make me want to stay all day.
