I initially started popping into this liquor store due to the sheer convenience of its location…read morejust outside the Newkirk subway station. Now, it has become my go-to spot for everything wine, bubbly, and liquor. I love that they carry Gruner Veltliner, and also an enormous selection of well-priced wines. The $5.99 Vinho Verde is one of my staples. It's always a nice surprise to see how well valued their sparkly stuff is too - I think a bottle of Veuve will only run you around $42! The cherry on top is the consistently pleasant service, as well as their dedication to stay open to the last minute of their store hours - goodness knows I would've had many more disappointments if they closed early, but they've never let me down.

I bought a bottle of Moscato at Big Tree Bottles and promptly took it home to drink it. Upon trying…read moreto open it only five minutes later, the bottle exploded, shattering into pieces, leaving the kitchen and me covered in wine. Thankfully, I wasn't hurt in the process. I immediately went back to the store with clear evidence in hand that the bottle had exploded (which also includes the soaked shorts I was wearing; I was trying to catch the store before closing). The woman at the counter was very rude to me, insisting that I was making up the story and that the New York State Liquor Authority (SLA) prohibits the return of alcohol. I later verified via combing the SLA website and other sources on liquor distribution in the state of New York that this is indeed a false claim. I offered the compromise to simply receive a replacement bottle instead of getting a refund. After all, I wasn't trying to get away with free wine via wringing out the sponge I used to clean my counters and floor -- I just wanted the original wine I paid for. This compromise was also quickly shot down, with claims that "if I give you a replacement bottle, I have to give everyone a replacement bottle." On top of the stunningly rude customer service (and I have a very thick skin), multiple online sources on wine bottling confirm that an exploding bottle is a clear error, and it is an indication of either: a) an imperfection during the carbonation process (an oversight from the original manufacturer), or b) the result of storing the bottle in unsafe warm temperatures. Wine storage temperature guides indicate that Moscato must be kept at a temperature of 46F else risk overzealous fermentation, putting undue gaseous pressure on the bottle. This wine in particular was stored in the warm storefront on a hot day (a high of 85F), and not in a refrigerator where it would have been safe from overcarbonation. It's quite possible that other purchasers of this Moscato will run into this same issue. It was luck on my part that there was no injury, but there's no guarantee that somebody else won't come away with serious wounds. It suffices to say that after many years of living in Bushwick, I will go elsewhere to purchase wine in the future.

Not the best wine store but not the worst. The selections are solid with helpful description cards…read more The biggest knock is they only have 1 bottle of wine chilled at a time. No wine chiller. So god, forbid if someone need two of same bottle chilled. In my particular visit, I picked a familiar fancy bottle of wine for a special occasion. "Sorry, we don't have a your bottle chilled...would you like different one that has been chill?" Me: "No. this is fine". Me to myself: "I am not buying F$&k4ng smoking loon". The staff is very smug and unhelpful. If you want an example of smug, just check the signs throughout the store. They are the only game in the neighborhood for now but the neighborhood is growing. This place was dope and have bought cases in the past. Now it's no better than the bodega service with wines that are better than smoking lion.

Impersonal, albeit cute, shop on Broadway offering mostly natural wines, many of which boasting…read morethose trendy cartoonish labels that are all the rage these days. (Don't get me wrong, I love wineries partnering with visual artists; the appearance of these bottles attracted me to this store in the first place.) I wanted to like this shop more than I did, but I found it to be just okay. I was one of two customers mulling about. The front door has an intimidating message left over from peak covid times that demands everyone wear a mask and not use cash, and it caps the capacity to 8 or thereabouts. (Can't quite remember the number.) Antiquated as it is, a peek through the window will confirm not even the staff wear masks these days, though I'm not sure if they've gone back to accepting cash. I will preface this by saying, frankly, I know nothing about wine. I spent a very long amount of time just staring at the labels and trying to find a name or category that seemed remotely familiar based on my limited experience. Normally, in a more traditional type of shop, locating a reliable cabernet would be a breeze, but in this place, most of the reds I saw seemed to be blends, and I had a negative connotation in my head about blends for whatever reason, so I shifted to the whites shelf. As the other gentleman who had been perusing the shop before me had, by this time, checked out and went on his way, one would think the sole employee of the small establishment might glance up from his phone and say hi or ask if I was looking for something particular, but no, of course, they never ask when you want them to, and I did not want to be rude and interrupt whatever riveting activity found him so engaged. Instead, I turned to Google and, more importantly, Vivino to get an opinion, background, or any kind of information, however vague, regarding the selection before me. Short story long, although Vivino has not steered me wrong previously, there is a first time for everything, and the inexpensive "four-star" bottle I picked out (I wish I could remember the name, but memory fails me) turned out to be no good. I'm not particularly picky either, so this does not happen often. As someone else mentioned, in addition, at checkout, the register has the audacity to prompt you to tip. This might have made sense if the attendant had paid any attention at all.

I must start off my complimenting the sleek design of the store with the theme being red. Everything is strategically placed and aesthetically pleasing. As far as selections they have an abundance of natural wines, reds and orange wine. I happened to be in the mood for some txakolina and a pet nat and they delivered. Excited to try out some new to me varietals that they have. In addition to the wine there is a selection of mezcals, tequilas and more behind the cashier. They do have a nice selection of can cocktails and sake as well. I was informed that they are open daily from 1pm to 9pm and wine tastings on Fridays. Lastly, they do offer a loyalty program so make sure to sign up for that as well.
