Now it's empty shops, and fly by night stores (here today, gone tomorrow). Now even the big box stores, Winners, Shoppers and Zellers are packing up shop and leaving town. Shame, but the mall will likely be seeing the wreaking ball soon. Head elsewhere.

This is one of those malls that you go into and instantly you know that it's been put out to pasture. This mall feels like it's dying. That being said. The renovations that have gone into this place are really beautifully done! Sadly, it's not enough to make me go back. I only went in here for the Target, when that was a thing (RIP Target) and the other month to check out a business.

You'll find a fabulous Pete's Frootique, stocked quite differently from the one downtown and right next door is Cristall & Luckett Wine Merchants with a great wine selection from around the world. Prices range from $13 to ...well high and will go with any delicacy you've purchased at Pete's. As for fashion, there are clothes for kids at Bib & Tucker, as well as a number of shops for men and women that are unique and not your typical mall selection. One of my favorite shops is Uncommon Gear a very eco friendly place to buy toys, games and gear from strollers to every other nurturing thing kids need. Several home decor and foodie focused shops like Cucina Moderna, Backyard & Veranda (that has lots of stuff for indoors as well). There's even a branch of Stokes (always has sales and fun kitchen gear). The far end of the mall has travel agency, shoe repair...and more, plus access to Canadian Tire. And lastly, if you're into local handicrafts, there's a market just for you on Sundays from 11-5.

That being said, it has some unique stores and a pleasant artsy vibe (especially on the end of the mall that houses Pete's Frootique). The mall is mainly centered around Pete's Frootique as a prime destination, and prime destination it is.. It's somewhat comparable to "Whole Foods" in the US albeit on a smaller scale, but it makes up for its small size with a huge variety of food items that you are unlikely to find anywhere else in the city. The mall also has a variety of the standard cell phone carrier stands, a (too?) small Indigospirit bookstore, Mark's work wearhouse, Hallmark etc. The food court is small but the quality and health consciousness of the non-chain food vendors here makes it a very attractive to stop by for a meal... especially if you enjoy fresh ingredients and want a break from the monotony and excessive food processing offered by the standard fast food chains.

I'd much rather a mall where I can park and walk around. I know, I know, half of these stores wouldn't fit into your typical mall but I have to think the carbon footprint would be lower. Not that I'm going to start an environmental rant but form a pure user perspective, it's frustrating. It's park, go into store, walk out, drive to next store, park, and repeat. With all those reservations, Dartmouth Crossing does do better than some other shopping areas. For one thing, there are some sidewalks! And not one, but two, bus routes that service the area! They have also tried to create a "shopping district" within the larger area that focuses on clothing (mostly women's) in a "Main street" approach which is a nice change of pace. Areas for improvement: some of the intersections that are four-way stops should probably be converted to lights. Some of the "newer" sections don't have crosswalks - get on that.

It was kind of incredible to see him sort everything, check for damage, and share his vast knowledge of the artists and how the records were recorded/produced, etc. My friend and I ended up hanging out for a bit after closing and chatting with David and another customer. The owner is friendly and helpful, and if you're looking to get rid of any of your old music or movies, he'll take them off your hands for cash or store credit (store credit seems like the way to go in most cases, since he tends to be more generous with that than cash). As Adam B. mentioned, he brings his dog to work with him, she usually lounges on the floor in one of the aisles (which isn't really a problem as she seems friendly enough and is usually eager for a quick pat as you walk by).
