ABSOLUTE CROOKS! I just discovered I have been charged a $20 fee for making transfers from MY savings to my checking account. First of all, this is MY money, and lately I have been really struggling financially, even for basic necessities like food and gas. When I run short on money between paychecks (which happens a lot) I draw from my savings a little at a time ($10, $15, $20, whatever) BECAUSE I HAVE TO, just to get by until payday. Just this morning I saw a "notification" that I was charged $20 for an "Excess transfer" fee. I took a harder look and was horrified to see four of these bogus charges altogether. $80 STOLEN from my savings account. There is NO statement or notice regarding this penalty ANYWHERE on their site and certainly no notification at the time of making these transfers!! All it shows is where your funds are being transferred to and from, a simple confirmation button at the end. That's all, NOTHING else. Try it, you'll see. And many of the transfers I make are small amounts, just so I can EAT before next payday. So I transfer $10 from my account and get charged $20?????? Why on earth would I ever do that intentionally????? And they deduct these charges from your savings as opposed to your checking account so you don't even notice. This isn't even a "hidden fee", this is an invisible fee and a huge gouge at that. $20???? Give me a break! I never even had anything this bad when I was with Bank of America. Maybe I need to switch back. It's really nice to know that BECU sympathizes with their customers during such tough times. Many people are unfortunately in my same position as the cost of living continues to soar while wages do not. But apparently BECU wants to ROB hard working people???? These are not late fees, or overdraft fees...we're talking about simply moving your OWN money from one account to the other. All they need to do is add a pop up box when you make a transfer to INFORM you about this. I am beyond disgusted that they treat their members this way, especially when they portray themselves as an institution who really cares about their community. They are just like any other bank, after your money anyway they can take it. I've been with this credit union for many years, even had my mortgage with them and this is how they repay me????? It's bad enough for me to worry about money all the time and now BECU wants to steal from the piddly little savings I have?? Let's see if I get a response rom anyone at this bank who gives a rip. CHECK YOUR SAVINGS ACCOUNT!!!! read more

BECU is the financial institution I've ever worked with, and I've had accounts with 5 different ones in the past decade with relocating to different states. I chose BECU for a credit card initially, but have expanded to use it for my general banking. When I had issues transferring funds from another bank (not their fault) and they were absolutely amazing about it. Their customer service is awesome and their website is easy to use. Plus, I love that it's a credit union rather than a bank, and they are really active in the community, which I appreciate. Overall, I know I can call BECU with issues, and speak to a human who will get me the help or answers I need- how rare is that? read more

I opened a CD here because they had good rates. They gave me the wrong rate, however, and I had to make several calls to fix it. They've made several other errors and seem to make mistakes constantly. If you have an account here, I recommend watching it carefully. You can't rely on them to do their jobs competently or accurately. This is a review for becu generally. read more

I have been a member with BECU for many years now. I recently moved to Ballard and went into that branch to apply for Personal Loan so I could buy my first used car. I received amazing service from Jonah Solia. Not only was he professional, He was kind and personable. he fought for me to get the services I needed for my Financial goals, even if they were a little different then what I thought I would leave with. Jonah went the extra mile for me and I will always remember that. read more

I have been a very happy credit union member for over 3 years now. BECU has been very accommodating with a couple loans and willing to help with all banking needs! I was especially impressed with Aaron D. I walked into the 2232 NW Market location at 5:50 (10 mins till closing). I knew I was pushing it but I really needed to find this car loan that night! Aaron D. stayed late and I was able to get the car of my dreams. Thank you Aaron, you stayed late and SAVED THE DAY, Thank you!!! read more

It isn't the fact that BECU wouldn't give a simple checking account to someone with a small amount of debt. They have their rules, fine. It was the fact that they lied to me about why. They claimed I had a collection notice from my old credit union. That was simply untrue. I had the credit union call them AND fax them a letter saying it wasn't true. At my third meeting with someone there the person I was speaking with brought the letter back to his supervisor, who was in a glass office. She took one look at the letter, burst out laughing, and shook her head. The man came back out and told me I would never get a bank account, anywhere, ever. That is literally what he said. I went to Verity Credit Union who ran a full credit check at my request, showed it to me, verified that there was nothing of concern on my record, and then gave me an account AND offered me financial counseling to help me deal with my small debt. I know most people have a great experience with BECU. Mine was humiliating, demeaning, and completely inappropriate. I can't help but think it must policy to discriminate against people who don't have perfect credit, which in this economy, is not easy to maintain. Again, if they have rules about it, fine, be up front about it. Elitist dismissal in the rudest way possible to people who are low income but still paying their debts is simply not ok. read more

In 25 years of being a homeowner and financing two houses, I've never dealt with such an incompetent financial institution. These folks screwed up everything about my home equity loan. I told them repeatedly that I wanted to make bi-weekly payments, which they could not figure out. Since they don't take phone calls, and the BECU "call center" has a wait time of 20-30 minutes, I had to visit the Ballard office in person more than half-a-dozen times to try to resolve the problems. They still haven't fixed the problem. Today I decided to apply for a replacement home equity loan from another credit union, pay off this loan and never do business with BECU again. It will cost me $350 for an appraisal, but I'll get a lower interest rate. Go to any other credit union, but don't bother with these clowns. read more

We started the process to get pre-approved for a mortgage in May. The person we spoke to at the Ballard Branch was kind and helpful telling us, "The underwriters are a bit backed up so it may take 2-3 business days for ithe pre-approval to go through..." BECU has everything online, a few days later, the online site had our disclosures and messaging that "we are pre-approved!" Excellent! ...or, so we thought. Two weeks later we put an offer on a home, my agent needs a letter confirming the pre-approval - the window is so tight, I need to get the letter that day. I call BECU @ 9:00am, they say "call the loan officer." Loan officer, no answer. Multiple emails, no response. Call back, get passed around, wait in queue - I spent over an hour on hold talking to multiple people and NO ONE could give me any information about my pre-approval and how to get this simple letter. Finally someone is able to tell me, "Oh, so even though the site says it's ready, it looks like your pre-approval is still in queue with the underwriters, it'll probably be another week." What?!? I was livid. I was promised 2-3 days. The website (the only access I have to information) said we were good. It was now over 10 business days. The offer was due that evening. My loan officer finally replied to my email at 1:30pm only to ask a series of questions THAT I ANSWERED when we went through the process in Ballard initially. My wife and I scrambled. We went to a local Mortgage Lender who got us the same rate, pre-approval that day, letter in hand in one hour. This lender also came with with faster closing window (In competitive markets Sellers don't like retail banks because the take 35+ days to close.... case in point with BECU delays). Basically, BECU Home loans = slow service, dishonest communication, no internal communication, lack of transparency, tons of stress, and less compelling financing to Sellers. If buying a home is important to you, don't use BECU. read more

i love credit unions. i love cooperatives in general. unfortunately, CUs aren't always the most consistent in terms of level of service and quality of staffing. when we moved here, my partner opened an account with verity. i had yelped and googled and it was between becu and those guys... i still had money that i was living off of with a credit union in michigan, so i was waiting to find a job before i made a decision. thank god. the one experience i had at verity (the wallingford branch) was unpleasant and really bummed me out. plus, their whole setup is gimmicky, with weird rules and limitations on how and when and how much interest you get... blech. once i got a job, i opened my account at the safeway on 87th & greenwood on a saturday. i think. either way, i went there half expecting the branch to be closed... nope! it was staffed with incredibly helpful employees that helped us (my partner in crime & i) set up our accounts. no pressure to open credit lines, no spiels, no bullshit. i liked that it was straightforward.... 6% interest on the first $500 in both savings and checking, fancy ATMs, nice online banking site. so, flash forward to this week. i get paid... with a paper check. damn. on a friday evening, when i work until midnight. double damn. thankfully, the bank card arrived in the mail that day and i was able to pop the check in the ATM and have them front me the money! woo-hoo! plus, with the online banking, i can transfer my share of rent over to my guy's account without having to go to a branch location. no need to carry cash. no need to interact with humans, ever. at least not with how i bank. not that i don't like the employees... i just have better things to do with my time than go into a bank and interact with a teller, like sitting in traffic on the way to work. i was a little weirded-out that the bank card is a mastercard rather than a visa, but only because i've never used anything other than a visa, so i've got this nervousness about not being sure of where i can or cannot use it... overall, very happy with becu. read more

I've been with BECU since I turned 18, over ten years ago now. I have loved them ever since. Their rates are extremely fair and best of all - no annoying account maintenance fees! The basic savings account requires only a $5 minimum in the account at all times. This isn't a "$5 or we charge you per month" but they just hold $5 as generally untouchable. But really, $5 compared to a monthly fee? They have always been willing to work with me and ordering checks (if anyone still uses them) is pretty cheap as compared to what my mom usually paid through BofA. BECU actually LOWERED my rate on my credit card that I have through them - a refreshing change of pace! BECU ATMs also don't charge fees and you can even use other ATMs in the "CU Swirl" to avoid ATM fees. This isn't just in the State of Washington or the Seattle area either - I have even come across ATMs in the southeast that I can avoid ATM fees with because they are part of the connection! If you do open a BECU account and happen to move out of state for any reason (or away from the Seattle area), or just are not close to the main bank location in Tukwila, there are plenty of other credit unions that you can bank from (make deposits and withdrawls at). I would sometimes visit Waterfront Federal Credit Union to make deposits if I didn't, or couldn't drive all the way to the main branch. My parents recently joined BECU and I'm so glad they did. They were with BofA and after dealing with a huge identity theft mess, they just switched. My mom is happier with BECU despite having been with BofA for over 30 years. read more

I am not a BECU member and at this rate, I doubt I will be. Need to set up an appt with a loan officer in Ballard, but the branch doesn't take phone calls. Seriously? Maybe BECU doesn't need me to have an appointment, but I need one, so I can get in and out with a small child. Not impressed. Turns out the loan officer (downtown Seattle) that took my application didn't tell me they couldn't provide the type or amount of the loan I was applying for, so they just processed it and denied it. Which of course impacts your credit score. Thanks, BECU. read more

I have been in process with BECU for 6 months now on my refinance, my credit is great, I have 1/4 of my current mortgage paid off. I originally stopped at two branches and had a conversation with what I thought was two bankers only to find out that they were glorified tellers and could not do anything for me. After the second visit they said I needed to apply online. Finally when I had entered all information online I have gone through 2 loan processors and have gone two steps forward and one step back with each one in filling out the exact same paperwork. Today my new (3rd) loan processor called and said we are going to have to fill out new paperwork in addition to the usual bank statements, 401K accounts and pay stubs you would expect. If they had not locked me in with fees I would have went somewhere else some time ago. The excuse they use is that they are very busy processing loans and I believe them. This does not explain complete lack of ability to begin a loan at a branch, the multiple requests for the exact same paperwork and three different loan processors. Something is clearly amiss at BCEU read more

Good news everyone, I've been able to stay with BECU despite being in California. After my first review a customer service agent contacted me to let me know about all of BECUs co-ops with other credit unions. Nathan was a pleasure to work with. Super attentive and knowledgable. I recommend you to see Nathan for all your BECU banking needs.

Suffice it to say that we were with BECU for about 10 months and experienced nothing but aggravation, lack of professionalism, and unresponsiveness from the BECU team. By far the most positive experience we had was when we went in to close our account on August 1st and the transaction was handled with professionalism, courtesy, efficiency and an attitude of helpfulness. We'll stick with Bank of America, thank you very much, with whom we've had nothing but good experiences over a span of two decades. read more

The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because I don't like banks. It's some nutty thing from my childhood combined with my I'm-With-Bernie political leanings. But, as far as banks go, this one works the best for me. I rarely have to talk to a banker. I almost never have to wait in line for the atm. Their online deposits are the smoothest. There is free parking, when I do need to go in. And, most recently when I went in to get a certified check done, our Member Consultant Ginny, was so friendly, so efficient, and so much fun. It almost made me like banks (or credit unions, as the case may be) read more

Came in to BECU about 20 minutes ago. I put my name into the kiosk to wait for the next available representative. I was in the waiting area when a younger woman came in and began to type her name into the kiosk but then stopped and went over to a desk acting like she did not know there was a line. The representative told her "no worries" and began to help this woman instead of people who had been waiting patiently. This is the absolute worst experience I have ever had at a BECU branch. THE USAGE OF THE KIOSK IS COMMON KNOWLEDGE AMONG ALL EMPLOYEES AND COSTUMERS. This representative was a younger, brunette woman and I hope to never have to be seated with her since she clearly lacks professionalism. Both the employee and costumer knew damn well that they were in the wrong, which was clear from the conversation I and others overheard. The worst part about the situation was that both the employee and the costumer knew they were in the wrong, yet neither of them cared to make it right. Very disappointed in BECU! I was too frustrated with the situation to stick around, especially since it was a busy day and who knows when the next representative would be available after I was just robbed of my turn. read more

I've had awesome experiences with BECU for years, a huge fan, but that has all gone out the window in the last few months. Massive Stink 1 of 3: I've traveled before without incident. I called and told them I was going to Tawian. I get to Taiwan and the hotel runs my card. It doesn't go through. BECU has blocked it. The hotel won't take my TWD cash, they need the card for deposit reasons. Ever been to a country where you don't speak the language and you find out you cannot get a hotel room? Massive Stink 2 of 3: I get a call from BECU, someone has stolen my Debit Card Number. This happens. What shouldn't happen and what is frustrating is the gal is laughing about this as she is tell me on the phone. I ask her if they have frozen my account. Still laughing, she says no. I tell her I have $28,000 in the bank, I'm saving for a down on a home and to freeze my account immediately. She stops laughing. Massive Stink 3 of 3: Two weeks after the Debit Card Number theft, I opened a small business account. I had a Federal Tax ID number and needed the financing to be kept separate from my personal. I also only needed a business checking. The person who opened this account for me confirmed it was not linked to my personal and that it was only checking. Later that day, I went to Costco to purchase stuff. My personal had a $600 purchase from the previous day still in limbo. The business card purchase at Costco was $1600. It is Friday at 5pm. Neither debit card works (there is a $2k cap, should be per card). BECU customer service is not open until Monday. I have $28,000 in the bank and no access to my money. I don't carry cash. I found out later, that they claimed my small biz is a sole-prop and automatically linked it to my personal, thus I only have access to $2k at any time. They also said I was delinquent as they'd opened a savings for my biz account and I didn't have $5 in it. They cannot close this and it is mandatory I have a savings, I have no recourse to keep my business financials separate from my personal financials (other than to leave). BECU, WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO YOU? read more

They are no better than the big banks. I was advised by a relative that they were better, but everything is still based on your credit rating which if it's not great then you don't get any assistance. I wanted to improve my credit rating by getting a loan to pay off my credit cards and reduce the interest rate on my auto loan, but as always the computer decides. They wack you for every charge possible including atm fees, foreign transaction fees etc. Now I am stuck with high interest rates and going overdrawn every 2 weeks before I get my paycheck. I was not satisfied with my customer service experience here today. While the gentleman was trying to be very helpful, he was overeager and I felt rushed through my visit. I was having some problems with my Automatic Bill pay, so I went in to see if I couldn't get it figured out. While I was trying to explain my confusion to him, he kept interrupting me before I could even ask my question. First he pulled up the checking account I was not concerned with, then he gave me a very bizarre explanation as to why I was experiencing the problems that I was. he did give me a card so that I might follow up, which I appreciate. But I went home even more confused than I had come in! I called BECU when I got home, and the Bill Pay department had my questions answered within minutes! It was a very simple explanation, that had nothing to do with what this gentleman had told me. I believe the person who was assisting me would have been capable of helping me if he had listened to me rather than trying to answer my questions before they were even asked. Or if he had asked me some discovery questions to help him understand what I was asking. Otherwise, I would rather have been directed to somebody else working who might have been better prepared to answer my questions. read more

I love Credit Unions, but hate BECU. Credit Unions are supposed to treat everyone equally. BECU doesn't. They have a first time home owner program, but it doesn't apply to all members, only those below certain incomes. Banks give preferential rates to those of high incomes, BECU gives it to those with low incomes. They're supposed to treat people equally. Now that I can afford a house, they're not there for me as a first time home buyer. Want to do actual banking on a Saturday because you say, lost your bank card? Nope, they can't do that. To boot, their real branches, those with cash, are only located in the sticks. Get a car loan with them? They require a $500 deductible comprehensive insurance. Good luck finding anyone who knows anything about insurance who would recommend their minimums. Avoid them. Go with a real credit union. Companies like Seattle Metro are much better. The people who run this credit union are morons and scumbags. I have my lawyer reviewing the credit union laws to see if their discriminatory housing practices are even legal. read more

BECU sucks!!! Absolutely no compassion and lack of a desire to help. I was in an emergency situation and had no help with transferring money. They wouldn't expedite it..they said it was in the other banks hands. When I talked to the other bank, they said the money still hadn't left BECU. Someone was lying and after getting no effort from BECU I fully believe they could care less. I will not be banking with them. Don't let their advertising get you sucked in, it's a bank that has little person to person interaction and the small amount of human interaction you have isn't helpful. read more

BECU is anti small business. Aren't small business owners the life blood of America? Not according to these guys. These guys think small business owners should be viewed with suspicion and denied services. I have excellent credit, a decent income, and a good amount of money to put in the bank, but BECU denied me a credit card because I am self employed. Not because I have bad credit (I don't, I just checked it, it is excellent), but because I AM SELF-EMPLOYED. That is about as un-American as I can think of. Not to mention the poor customer service. I recently set up a new account at Wells Fargo with my wife. We were in and out in under half an hour, no problem. I went to BECU and it took well over an hour just to set up a savings and checking account. This should have been my first clue to run away. In any case, they do not get my business and I will be telling anyone who asks to avoid them. If you are eligible to join USAA, DO IT. They are wonderful. Even U.S. Bank is better than BECU. They have always worked FOR me, not AGAINST me like BECU does. read more

I recently found out I made an error with a funds transfer that did not go through and my overdraft protection was tied to my line of credit instead of my savings account. This resulted in a loan I was not aware of and a ton of interest fees over three months. I spoke with customer service and they were not helpful. I elevated the complaint and thankfully they understood it was an honest mistake and really helped me out. BECU takes customer service seriously and I appreciate it! Thanks for three decades of great service! read more

It's like going to the DMV at this location. I never go to the bank for anything except when myself or one of my daughters lose a debit card and need it replaced. Unlike some of the other neighborhood locations, they don't have anyone to help with quick services, like just needing a new debit card. Last year I waited an hour and a half just to get a new debit card because you put your name in the kiosk and there is no priority, you wait just like someone needing to take out a loan or open a new account. Last Saturday when I came in again because my daughter had lost hers and saw there was a 15 person wait, I just wanted to ask someone if I could come back on my own and get her a new card because she is a minor or if I needed to wait because she was with me. There was nobody you can just ask a question from, so I waited for a girl associate who was going to grab something from the printer (across the office) away from the customer she was working with (obviously banking is private, so made sure not to interrupt her and the customer), said to her, "excuse me, can I please just ask a quick question?", she replies, "no, I'm with people right now", I was like "what? is there anyone I can just ask a question from?", "no, we are all busy right now" she replies and walks away. I just left, unfortunately, I have to go back today, because I need to get her a card. People shouldn't have to put their name in kiosk and wait over an hour just to have a question answered. You need to have at least one more customer service person at least on Saturdays to help with quick inquires, card replacements, check re-ordering, etc. read more

BECU is abusing other credit unions' branches and they do not even have their own branches in the seattle metro area to serve their own members They have around 700000 members but they only have two branches around Boeing field to help the MORE equal members (I guess). Other members they do not care, just deal with ATM machines. Other credit unions in Seattle have to put up with issues from their members. This is not only unfair but also selfish practice. It is the type of behavior that is worse than banks. At least banks deal with their customers. I sincerely hope BECU at least takes care of their members before they decide to join the shared branch network. I do not advise anyone to join a credit union that basically do not have real tellers to handle basic transactions. read more
