A dear friend of mine passed last November. As her trustee, I was able to closed several very large brokerage and bank accounts by providing a death certificate, copy of my drivers license and a copy of the trust. It took less than a week to accomplish this. However, I have been trying to liquidate my friends' ($300) BECU account since December! I've sent in several "Claim of Fund of deceased account holder forms" and the appropriate attachments". Their process is intentionally complicated and despite being told initially that they have all the documentation from me that they need, a few weeks later they said they did not receive the affidavit of small estate--which I did send. The only good thing about BECU is that I live close to a local branch. Other than that it's been mid level service. Someone from Utah has been spending money from my account without my consent. I live in Seattle not Utah. Why this didn't look at suspicious to BECU? I have the slightest idea. This credit union has TERRIBLE ONLINE support. I had to call several times to cancel a recurring external transfer. I was advised to fill multiple confusing forms, and they didn't work. One of the worst banking institutions ever. Past errors have been authorizing the same check to clear through my account twice, snarky tellers and basic lack of services like check cashing and getting change. This week I had a fraudulent charge in my checking account. I called BECU and they immediately canceled my debit card. I went to a branch to get a new one. The next day while paying for parking my car was declined. I called them and found out that the rep who gave me the new card never connected it to my checking account. The phone rep assured me she fixed it. Tonight I still couldn't use it and it's not for lack of funds. Continued failures. Next week we will take my personal and business banking away from BECU to someplace that has their act together. Complete failure as a financial institution. Just say no. read more

No evening or weekend customer service, unbelievable in 2019! I've been a BECU member for 8+ years, and had everything from checking, savings, credit card, line of credit, and car loan products with them. I appreciate that they keep costs low by having no tellers and mostly, find it an easy bank to deal with through online/atm resources. HOWEVER. I am leaving, because of their refusal to provide customer service support on weekends. Multiple times in the last several months I have had issues where I needed customer support, and they're closed. Nobody to call. Once I had a purchase hanging out in my account which hadn't yet cleared, and took me to my max spend for the day. My debit card was rejected with $200 groceries sitting at the counter. Mind you - its not that there wasn't plenty of money - someone just needed to hit a button to acknowledge that there was a merchant charge still waiting to clear. It took 90 seconds to remedy once the lines opened up on Monday. It would have taken 90 seconds to remedy on that Saturday, but - there's nobody to call. Another time my debit card was turned down for plane tickets I was buying. I don't remember what the cause was on that, but it was again a one-button fix that took...maybe 2 minutes once I called. But in the meantime, since there was no phone resource for 2 ENTIRE weekend days, I had to wait until Monday, and the tickets had gone up $400 in those 2 days. I've called and talked to managers and while they're all great and polite, they've made it clear there is no plan to support customer service on weekends. It's crazy to me. The cost of having someone on the phone lines for the weekend can't possibly be the cost that will break their whole model. How about when my car stalls somewhere and I try to use my own damn money on my debit card and for some reason it doesn't work - who can I call? Nobody. Because BECU won't be there. The answer? Carry another card. Well, fine, I will. But no sense in me keeping yours too. BECU needs to wake up. This is ridiculous lack of customer service. read more

They are so awful! Never again... they have really gone down hill over the years! They are liars, and crooks! I have a good credit score, 815. In 2023, they tried to tell me I didn't have enough money in my account for my monthly Heloc loan payment! WTF? I checked, and their was plenty; way more than enough! They lied because they wanted me to increase my monthly payment and they are the one who set up the pay date, and amount of the withdrawal! I don't get it? Now several months later they are not honoring my loan amount, and they have another excuse! They are telling me my mother's maiden name is misspelled in their records! My name is Tim W. , reside in Snohomish, WA and I would like to share with you two very positive experiences I have had recently with John S . at the Seattle Hill road BECU branch office. I want to start with a question, mostly rhetorical, but it emphasizes my point. When was the last time you sat down on the 'other' side of a BECU table, anxiety filled with the internal question, how can I improve my financial situation ? I did this on Friday, February 4th and again today Tuesday, February 8th. On Friday, I met with John to purchase a used Toyota 4Runner from my son. He sold it to me and I was very excited to purchase the vehicle from Nate and leverage a fairly small auto loan from BECU. John spent over an hour with Nate and I explaining things and filling out literally all of the paperwork. The only thing I have to do is wait for my vehicle license plates to be delivered. John took the time to explain every step and make the transaction of getting a loan and buying a vehicle as easy as purchasing a cup of coffee. Walking in and sitting down in any financial institution is a bit unreeling. After meeting John and experiencing his utmost concern for me financially, I am forever indebted. I've used several branches of BECU but this is my "home" branch. I have only received thorough, professional and gracious service here and today was no exception. The lobby was packed and there were others waiting but even so my wait was minimal. The branch manager couldn't answer my question so she googled it, which is exactly what I would have done. the location is convenient, but it is often dirty in after hours, and frequently the pen is out of ink, although I've noticed in the past few months, they have a good stock of pens. My main complaint is that you can't talk to a local person. Their website lists a phone number for the local branch, but it's a trick - you just get a call center, after waiting for fifteen or twenty minutes on hold. And it's an irritating hold. If you could just put the phone on speaker, and go about your work, with music playing in the background, that would be not so horrible, but they interupt the music with stupid, irritating ads. So you think a human has answered the phone, but no, it's just somebody making some generic pitch. And they repeat it over and over. If they HAVE to put voice-overs (hint: they don't) then it should be a one hour track, so people don't have to listen to it repeatedly. Then, when you finally do get someone, it's at some call center (they won't even tell you where the call center is - what's THAT about?!) not at the branch, which is specifically what i called. I think I left something there, and I want to ask someone there if I did. Otherwise, I'd just call the generic number. Fortunately, I only have to call them every couple of years, but every time I do, I have to do a major calming-down when I'm done. read more

BECU does an excellent job hiring. Their employees are helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. I have had a BECU account since middle school (I'm in my late twenties now). They have helped me with a savings account, a debit card, checking account, car loan, short term budgeting, long term budgeting, and getting my first credit card. I am almost never disappointed in their service. I use several locations but Ballard is my home location and my favorite! So we had to show up to the branch in Queen Anne and waste Our time Bc he didn't think that was an important point. So they reschedule. I don't trust them with my money. Here's why. I went to BECU to get a secure loan. Gave them 500. Dollars to cover the loan up front and also opened a checking and savings account to which i deposited cash. Not long there after, i got a letter saying my payment was late for the secure loan which was on a recurring payment schedule. Turns out they screwed up the application and i had to go to the bank and sign a new contract. Not long after that the loan was paid off all at once instead of over time. I wanted the payments to take place over time to show i was making payments. Not just borrow money and immediately pay it off. What's the point of that? I closed my account. I've been a member of BECU for more than half of my life; I got an account after I got my first job, at a time when only it was still only open to Boeing employees and their families. I've never had a bad experience with them, but I had a particularly good one yesterday that I thought worth sharing. The beginning of the year is always kind of a tricky time for me financially, and this week I didn't properly plan for some expenses that caused my account to become overdrawn. This was entirely avoidable, but nonetheless, when I called to try to figure out what had happened, Ellie did a great job explaining exactly what happened and resolving the issue(s) created by my inaction. When we were done, I nearly gushed on the phone that this is why I've been a member of BECU for so long, but decided against it. We're all prone to being vocal about the negative experiences in our lives (and looking at my paltry history of Yelp reviews, I am as guilty of this as anyone) but sometimes it's worth celebrating the really good ones, too. read more

No fucking fees. None! My banking experience since moving to Seattle in 1996 has been progressive. Coming from Philadelphia, I learned to bank with the company who had the most ATM locations. Landing in Seattle, that was the now-defunct Seafirst. They sucked, a huge chunk of my first month's income went toward bullshit fees, so I went to Key Bank. Same story there, so I went to Washington Mutual. WaMu had me for a few months, but eventually fucked me too. I got smart then, and realized that credit unions were a way better option. At this point, some time in 1999 or 2000, debit cards got Visa logos and it was a lot easier to live without cash and ATM visits were replaced with "cash back" from supermarket transactions. So, Group Health Credit Union got my business. They were sloppy and unprofessional, likely a result of the desire to provide more services but the inability to act with such a small customer base. Something really bad happened with them that chased me away, and I tried BECU out of almost pure chance. Never fucking happier. What's the word that you would use to describe the perfect match of my needs to a business's services? Tivo-riffic? No-blunderful? Unbelievabawesome? BECUpendous? Whatever it is, BECU is that. They're the best bank ever. Best mother fucking bank ever. Second place is a mile back, they're the fucking best. I direct-deposit my money in and suck it out with a credit card. I overdraw my account daily, no lie, and just sync it up every couple days. My debit never runs dry at the supermarket or gas pump, and I don't have to live in fear of them stacking my transactions to fuck me harder than they should (because they never think of fucking me over). I have a credit line with them and pay the interest, but it's like paying a membership fee to somewhere awesome because they fucking rule. When you watch TV or read blogs like Consumerist.com, you see people getting boned by banks left and right. Frontline on PBS did an hour on how the 'free checking' marketing ploy was just an industry-wide front for a new revenue stream exclusively based on creatively generating overdraft charges. If I was a victim of that stuff, I'd kick the shitty screen in. Being a BECU customer, though, I feel like commercial bank customers are below the cut for normal intelligence, like people who are religious or Republican. The Federal fucking government has to step in to stop banks from fucking you over worse and worse as they scratch around for revenue, and still people voluntarily keep their business with these pussies. Stupid in spite of the obvious, I'll never understand it. BECU has no institutional fees. None. Sometimes, if you violate the federal law regarding the transfer of funds between certain accounts, they zap you with a $20 zinger. The beauty, even in that, though, is that they warn you on their website that you've used, say, 2 of your allotted transfers and have 4 remaining. THEY DON'T WANT TO CHARGE YOU FUCKING BULLSHIT FEES. I would bet that the amount of money they save on customer complaints and law suits earns them more money than they could reap in fees, and they have my business for life for undertaking that humble approach to customer management. I have a personal and a business account with BECU. When it comes to banking, BECU is FANTASTIC. Since I switched from big banking to credit unions and had such a pleasant experience, it was obvious that I would come to them for a mortgage for our first home purchase. My husband was on board since he heard great things about BECU's rates and how smooth the process was from other people who used them at his job; even those with spotty credit. This is where we made a mistake. The process started off rough; we were new to the process and honest up front about it. Our loan officer was great for the first few weeks. Please give us the following, could you verify this, etc., etc. It didn't become irritating until there was something new everyday. Then we wouldn't hear anything for a week. Then it became ridiculous to the point of asking for our school transcripts...2 weeks later all the while rushing us to lock in our rate. I am now educated on the underwriter game, but two weeks later? Now that is just silly. What even sillier is that she was working on 70 loans, including ours, at once. Wha? Strike One. It went south when the underwriter on her team, junior she admits, made the mistake and checked our credit multiple times' because she for was in a rush and 'forgot' to be thorough. My credit is great and can take the beating, but my husband worked hard to rebuild his credit to a good standing, and because of this, it dropped like a hot brick. We didn't find out until we were alerted by another competing mortgage firm and when confronted about it, the loan officer tap danced around the issues, wanted to verbally 'talk' about it instead of putting it in writing so we can alert the large credit firms and contest the mistake. The resolution? Giving us a number to give another mortgage firm about the credit check. Long story short, we have unnecessary dings to our credit due to silliness and no one on BECU's side was brave enough to communicate the issue and fix it. Strike Two. Lastly, when we inspected the house and found out we needed a 203k loan, our loan officer went from kinda neutral to treating us like we were second class citizens. My husband was distinctly humored by the fact that she was super friendly after hearing we were dropping 15% cash for the down payment, despite our temporary FHA status, but acted like a jilted girlfriend after that 203k news. When called on it, she tap danced again on her behavior, threw some phone numbers in our direction and that was it. We understand that BECU doesn't handle 203k loans, but to be treated like that? Not cool. We took our business elsewhere and acquired an FHA and 203k in less than a week in contrast to a month. Strike Three. Again, when it comes to banking, BECU is top notch, but sadly, our experience with their loan department was anything but. read more

So, I adore BECU. I love it. In fact, it is the only financial institution that has ever made me happy. I used to have some accounts at WaMu and some at BECU. Well, since WaMu became Chase and turned into an evil and awful banking institution, I moved my Chase accounts so that all accounts are now at BECU. It was a super easy process and I am much happier now. The employees at this location are SUPER friendly and helpful. They've been able to help me with every question I've had and have made things quick and easy. There is one huge con to this location. And that is the ATM. While that ATM is a fantastic invention (I can deposit my cash and checks into it and have them reflected in my account immediately!), the line for this machine gets SO LONG that I often spend 20 minutes waiting in line to use it. The deposit feature is fantastic, but once a woman in front of me took 15 minutes depositing 10 or more checks into that machine. It took forever. I can't stand how long I have to wait, especially when I just want to get cash!! I can't wait for the branch to open up on Market Street! Hopefully this will solve the SLOOOOW wait time for cash. I dealt with 2 different people at this BECU branch today, the first one, Josh, was pretty helpful and kind, the second one, Katy, was absolutely horrible. I asked Katy a direct question regarding my account, and she did not answer, so I asked again, and she told me to read the TOS of my account. Which a) did not answer my question and b) wasn't even relevant. So I asked her again, and she turned her computer monitor to me and invited me to read the TOS directly from her screen. Again, that wasn't relevant at all, nor did it provide me with an answer, so i asked for a third time. i said "I'm asking you a direct question" and she looked me right in the eye and said "My direct answer is... for you to read the Terms of Service." Not knowing the answer is fine, it's a good moment to go find someone who does - that way we can all learn from it. And that is precisely what Katy should have done. But she didn't. I certainly hope that she does not stand for the level of service that is usually given. read more

Join your local credit union! They care about you, and the community they reside in. BECU has the kindest and friendliest bank people I've ever met. BECU offers a high interest rate(7.2% I believe) on the first $500 in both checking and savings. BECU links your savings to your checking, and if your account dips too low they will transfer funds automatically. BECU allows you to withdraw up to $1000 a day All the credit unions are linked by shared branching, and you can deposit and withdraw at any of them. And today they gave me (an account holder), and my daughter, each a debit card loaded with $25 for her signing up for an account. We love BECU! read more

After about 5 years of prodding from me, all of a sudden it's HIS idea to change banks... seriously... can you believe this bull crap?? We had a few different options in mind, but in the end, BECU won out. Can I express to you how NICE everyone is? Even people on the phone, when I had a question about their online banking, were jokey (not in a cheeseball way) and helpful and were great. Even their phone system to get to talk to someone is WAY easier and better to understand. Sure, we are still in the beginning stages, but so far, I LOVE BECU. I wouldn't go all out and say you are an idiot for not going here... but well... I think you get my point. Since no actual branches in Ballard, we stop by the express version here if we need anything. Deposits are not available ASAP currently since they do not process them, but for the maybe 3 or 4 checks I receive a year, that's fine. My plan was to transfer my accounts from Chase to BECU as they had savings accounts with a bit higher interest rates. The day I drove to their Ballard location the building had experienced a power outage. I called later that morning and was told they would reopen at one. I returned at two to discover they were still closed. An employee (the manager, perhaps?) was standing outside and asked if I needed help. After explaining that I wanted to open some accounts, he asked me if I realized there are no tellers, that most people do everything online, that EVERYONE pays for bank checks regardless of their balance, etc., I got the distinct feeling that he didn't want my money and decided I was too old to manage an account at their oh-so-hip CU. So, in the end, I walked down the block to Chase and reopened my account there, where apparently my money isn't tainted. read more

Talking with Jennifer in Wires (Kent location) was SUPER HELPFUL, and she explained that for us, a bookkeeping and accounting firm, we can't see monthly statements for our clients. This means that a bookkeeping firm or bookkeeper can't serve a BECU business account owner easily without using the account owners' login and password to pull monthly statements down. As the owner of a bookkeeping firm, we need to see statements, drill down on transaction details, but...that is all. We shouldn't be given access to move money out of the bank, and certainly should not be a signor merely to see monthly statements. Because of this limitation, we often recommend Chase or BOA since they have a more robust online banking platform that allows more granular permissions so we can see transactions and statements, but move money out of the bank, nor unenroll from e-statements. BECU - we love local banks, and ask that you please adjust your system so agent users like us can see and download PDF statements, but not move money or need to be a signor (or come into the bank to sign forms) just for online access. It should easy for a business owner who has accounts at BECU to grant online access to a bookkeeping firm/bookkeeper, etc. so they can help with bookkeeping/data entry, but not not move money. Although, I have never anything but great customer service from anyone at BECU. She saved me from demons that are standard banks. I woke up from the nightmare I was living with US Bank, and Chase prior to them. BECU makes banking the way it should be. No holding checks, no hidden fees, and no BS customer service. I love that they are locally owned and that every customer is a share holder. I also opened a credit line that has amazing APR rates that will never screw me over. We came here to deposit some checks before heading to several other appointments in the area. This location (which I think is new?) is conveniently located in the ground level of the Ballard Square Building, which actually has a few free 30 minute parking spaces located in the back for patrons. That was a huge plus since finding parking right on Market Street can be a bit challenging (Okay, and I cannot parallel park for anything in my life!). The wait wasn't too long, and since, as usual, I had lost my ATM card, I had to wait to get it replaced by one of the member services reps. Turns out they can make you an ATM card here! Yes, that's right - they can replace your card on the spot. I thought I would have to give them my ID and wait a few days for it to show up, but I was able to leave with a new card and PIN in under 10 minutes. Love it! Nice, clean branch. There are many ATMs in the lobby for people who can do all their banking without having to speak to a rep. The waiting area is nice and comfortable if you do need to wait to speak with someone. I am so glad to have a BECU branch close to where I work, since I commute from Everett and getting to my local home branch isn't always convenient. Usually I hit this branch up for banking and not having to interact with the staff. But, I've been a total idiot at their ATMs and have left my debit card in the machine 3 times (2 times, the machine shredded the card and 1 time the card was turned in). Today I had to pop in to get a letter for US immigration purposes, stating that I hold a joint account with my husband. Nathan D could not have been more helpful drafting a letter from a template, and Ginny B notarized the letter - all at no cost to me! I would have gladly paid, but I really appreciated this service. it took a little bit of time due to system glitches, but it was otherwise seemless. I use the mobile app only to deposit checks, and it's a struggle every time: snap, submit, reject, repeat. It's hard to have confidence in a bank whose web downtime seems to be somewhere around 50%. If they can't even manage a web site why would I expect them to be able to handle the much more complicated task of secure/reliable banking? I can't think of a single other institution of any sort that comes anywhere close to as bad a job as BECU. Oh, and when the web site is up, it's horribly slow. Nothing but helpful. Real nice people who don't feel like they are cheating you out of your money. No fake smiles and "overdraft protection" offers every time you walk in (aka Wells Fargo). Also, online banking is great with becu! If you are thinking about moving from a big bank to a small credit union, do it. I haven't looked back. read more

I can't say enough good things about this credit union -- holy smokes. On two separate occasions the customer service staff have sincerely gone way, way out of their way to do everything they possibly could for me. Astonishing, genuine place. Their online banking is always accurate and swift -- never had a problem keeping track of my account at all. And because of that, I've never had a problem with overdrafts. Instant ATM deposits are an ultraplus. Bank here if you can, and no where else. read more

ABSOLUTE CROOKS! I just discovered I have been charged a $20 fee for making transfers from MY savings to my checking account. First of all, this is MY money, and lately I have been really struggling financially, even for basic necessities like food and gas. When I run short on money between paychecks (which happens a lot) I draw from my savings a little at a time ($10, $15, $20, whatever) BECAUSE I HAVE TO, just to get by until payday. Just this morning I saw a "notification" that I was charged $20 for an "Excess transfer" fee. I took a harder look and was horrified to see four of these bogus charges altogether. $80 STOLEN from my savings account. There is NO statement or notice regarding this penalty ANYWHERE on their site and certainly no notification at the time of making these transfers!! All it shows is where your funds are being transferred to and from, a simple confirmation button at the end. That's all, NOTHING else. Try it, you'll see. And many of the transfers I make are small amounts, just so I can EAT before next payday. So I transfer $10 from my account and get charged $20?????? Why on earth would I ever do that intentionally????? And they deduct these charges from your savings as opposed to your checking account so you don't even notice. This isn't even a "hidden fee", this is an invisible fee and a huge gouge at that. $20???? Give me a break! I never even had anything this bad when I was with Bank of America. Maybe I need to switch back. It's really nice to know that BECU sympathizes with their customers during such tough times. Many people are unfortunately in my same position as the cost of living continues to soar while wages do not. But apparently BECU wants to ROB hard working people???? These are not late fees, or overdraft fees...we're talking about simply moving your OWN money from one account to the other. All they need to do is add a pop up box when you make a transfer to INFORM you about this. I am beyond disgusted that they treat their members this way, especially when they portray themselves as an institution who really cares about their community. They are just like any other bank, after your money anyway they can take it. I've been with this credit union for many years, even had my mortgage with them and this is how they repay me????? It's bad enough for me to worry about money all the time and now BECU wants to steal from the piddly little savings I have?? Let's see if I get a response rom anyone at this bank who gives a rip. BECU is the financial institution I've ever worked with, and I've had accounts with 5 different ones in the past decade with relocating to different states. I chose BECU for a credit card initially, but have expanded to use it for my general banking. When I had issues transferring funds from another bank (not their fault) and they were absolutely amazing about it. Their customer service is awesome and their website is easy to use. Plus, I love that it's a credit union rather than a bank, and they are really active in the community, which I appreciate. Overall, I know I can call BECU with issues, and speak to a human who will get me the help or answers I need- how rare is that? read more
