Carole and I enjoyed lunch at the Beaver House Restaurant in Statesboro. The exterior is in very poor condition, needs painting and some new timbers on porches, ramps and rails; but the inside of the old mansion is lovely. Built in 1914, the grandson of original house builder, still cooks in the restaurant. We especially loved the baked mac-n-cheese, lima beans, ham and fried chicken. Very reasonably priced all-you-can-eat at $12,50 family style, we loved eeverything. We were there right at the 11 AM opening, so I took lots of pics the dining areas, so beautiful. The waittress was very attentive and took excellent care of us. If the owners would scrape and paint the exterior I would gladly have given it 5 stars. read more

I was recently visiting family in Georgia and they brought me for lunch at this beautiful restaurant. I just loved it from the moment I walked in!! We were the first party in there for dinner and were seated in one of the many dining rooms in front of a window overlooking the porch. Shortly after being seated and getting our drinks we were served our dinner family style. We had dishes with fried chicken and barbecue chicken, black eyed peas, cabbage, mashed potatoes, gravy and biscuits. Everything was good, but nothing was particularly special. It was a good meal and a good price. Our service was excellent and we were quickly offered refills on anything we finished. I felt like I stepped back in time. This restaurant is in a historic home, with tables throughout. There is a set menu and the food is served "family style," in other words you receive a serving bowl or plate, one for each item, and you serve yourselves just as you would at Thanksgiving with the family. Food is good old fashioned southern cuisine served family style even if you are a party of one. The atmosphere is like stepping back to your grand mother's or great grandmother's house even with creaky wooden floors. The service is outstanding. I understand that everything is busy on Father's day so we went at 1045 to get in at the Beaver House. We waited in the sun until 1105 for them to finally open the door and tell the over 20 people waiting that they were by reservation only today. No sign on the door staring that and none of the 5 people that walked by the door thought to let anyone know. There was nothing on their website or facebook page saying that was the case. I continue to go back because it is a nice restaurant in Statesboro and the old house with the history is too cute to pass up! For graduation we choose this restaurant because with a big party it was easy to be seated and we had a private section instead of being in a loud restaurant that my grandparents would not be able to hear in. So the environment and ambience recieve an easy 5 star. This place is cute ya'll! Now the reason for the low rating is I hate to say it as a foodie but the food! The food was a disappointment. It is served family style which is a neat thing to do in a restaurant but when I went there with three people there was hardly any servings on the plate. Not impressed at all. Our large party with reservations set for months weren't seated together, the chairs between our tables were so close we couldn't get up or get to the seats. The chairs were folding chairs like in a fellowship hall. The servers were wearing stained t-shirts and very short shorts. Is this a pub or an antebellum mansion turned supposed nice restaurant? When we finally received our drinks my glass was dirty, it had a lipstick ring. The server took it from me, looked at it and said it's clean and handed it back to me. I'm not kidding. We then waited over 30 minutes for them to bring food. Family style good, fried chicken was good. Biscuits could be hockey pucks. Refills of tea in your dirty glass aren't free either and everyone at your table may not be guaranteed food. Skip this one people. read more

This is the easiest 5 star review I've written in a long time. Halfway between Augusta and Savannah we got hungry. Being lifetime Allman Brothers fans, we were in Statesboro with only Yelp to lead us through our Statesboro Blues. The Beaver House is a historic Victorian style inn and restaurant. It's showing it's age like a classic elegant lady. Lots of faded floral and wall sconces along with furniture from back in the day. We quickly learned that the menu changes daily and there is only one order available which is everything listed on the board. For lunch, the price is $7.99 per person and as the board reads they "consider it a compliment to serve you seconds". For our lunch we were able to enjoy: Southern Fried Chicken Shrimp & Sausage Jambalaya Green Beans Rice & Gravy Field Peas with Snaps Potatoes Au Gratin Macaroni Slaw Biscuits Everything is served at one time on antique flatware. Add in an iced tea and a Peach Cobbler for dessert. What more could a person want??? The portions are all properly sized such that we are not feeling like we ate too much. Our server Jaime was so gracious and attentive. We've been traveling for a few weeks now and eating well the entire time. This is one of the most special meals. We gave this restaurant four stars in April. Based on two visits since then, we've decided to downgrade them. Briefly, we've dined there for two dinners. on both occasions, the food was not served hot, and the biscuits, which would be tasty if at least warm, weren't even warmed up. Everything about our meals looked and tasted as if it had been re-heated (insufficiently) from lunch. We're not sure what's going on. We're told the restaurant no longer has a liquor license, but overall what we found to be delicious and appealing five months ago now seems a disappointment, This makes us sad; the Beaver House is a lovely place with a rich atmosphere, but something has gone wrong in the kitchen, and we need to be honest about what we've found here lately. read more

Forget The Lady and Sons in Savannah, if you want true, honest, Southern food in the traditional Georgia style, come to The Beaver House. For one, the prices are lower than The Lady and Sons, for two, the atmosphere is a charming old farm house filled with antiques where you actually do feel like you're dining in an auntie's home after church on Sunday. In contrast, The Lady and Sons is too busy, too rushed, and obvious in its commercial zeal. Granted, Statesboro is a good ways from Savannah, but seriously folks, this is the real deal. The fried chicken is awesome: I've never had better, and the service is very polite in an atmosphere that can best be described as peaceful. However, there are stories that this old house is in fact haunted, which to me only adds to its charm and intrigue. The country fried steak and desserts, to not even mention the side veggies, are sublime but most people come I think mainly for the fried chicken, and I don't blame them one bit. read more

The restaurant is located in what seems to be an old victorian style house that has been turn into a bed & breakfast inn, but you can dine in the restaurant without being a guest at the inn. The place has a very southern style atmosphere. You are immediately greeted by one of the friendly staff where they will take you to your table. The tables are all in different rooms of the inn. The menu is quite simple. You get two meat items along with 4 or 5 side dishes. You can also get seconds if you like, all in one low price of $7.99. The menu change daily. You can call ahead to get the menu for the day because you don't really get to pick what you get to eat. The portion size is quite small, but as the waitress explained to us, you can always get seconds. I think it is quite a good deal for the price. At the time that my friend and I went, the menu consisted of slice prime rib and pieces of chicken. The sides are green beans, mash potatoes and gravy, mac & cheese, broccoli, biscuits, and some type of other beans. We also ordered brownies with ice cream and pecan pie with ice cream for desserts. The desserts were super delicious. Everything is home made and totally worth it. I will definitely go back here. I think that this place is perfect for students who miss home cooking. read more

My husband and I stopped here on out way home from Savannah. The restaurant is ran in an old converted home. The home is actually the home that the owner grew up in. I found this to add to the charm of this place! We were greeted by a friendly hostess and seated right away. We got the boarding house special which is $7.99 per person and you get seconds on each dish. It comes with 2 meats and about 7 sides. The food is really good. The only reason I'm giving two stars is because it was decorated for Christmas. This is nothing personal but a review of a business... that being said, I'd never eat there again. And I'm sad about that, I love enchanting southern charm home grown businesses. We had a Christmas party, let me just tell y'all... -hair in food -the green beans, rice and gravy was all cold (the fried chicken was good though) -extremely dirty (bathtub in bathroom was filthy) huge spider/dust webs, everything needs painted and it has a musty moldy smell -customer service was decent but the two servers hair was all over the place and they were wearing T-shirts and didn't come across as friendly or professional at all. The beaver house is easily the most beautiful and peaceful dinner you could choose to have in statesboro. It is very quaint and modest and the atmosphere of the place just brings you closer to the people your with. The ambiance is so homey that you really do feel like you're eating at your own table with only your family there. The service, atmosphere, and beautiful of the Beaver House deserves 5 stars, but.. the food let me down so hard. Brought my mom and fiancé and they both ordered the fried chicken and the pork, but I balled out and got the prime rib and the fried shrimp. I would've been better with getting the chicken and pork honestly.. the prime rib was flavorless, the shrimp was ok at best. It sucked that I was more excited to eat my sides than my meal. The sides were fabulous by the way tho. Chicken was also very good too. My advice is to stick with the chicken or such or even get their low country boil that they offer on the weekends. Interesting set up inside an old house/mansion type of property. I enjoyed the atmosphere and it was definitely busy. But the no menu, one choice, family-style dinner left something to be desired. Don't get me wrong there are some restaurants that knock the one choice option out of the park but this isn't one of those restaurants. The southern style chicken seemed old or stale and the cream corn and other veggies were the same. They tried to do the "mama's home cooking" type of meal but my mama would be ashamed of what was presented. Also, the few waitresses we had weren't very excited about their jobs and it showed to the point of it being awkward. Now I get people who have bad days, but this us more about the food/presentation of the meal. Overall the staff was nice enough but the food didn't compare to the atmosphere; especially not for the price. read more

Weve been here several times, and can say weve always enjoyed ourselves.The atmosphere is unlike anything else in statesboro and its environs, homey but also professional. The meal here is served on the table, and all eat from the selections you select from the choices offered that day. The platters of food can and will be refilled if you ask as part of the meal cost. This fact made those hungrier very pleased indeed, while those not as hungry could easily eat until they were satisfed. Deserts here are excellent for those who have saved room to eat even more. To be true to my other ratings, I can only give the Beaver House 3 stars, but don't let that fool you. I would definitely return given the chance. We were the ONLY people in the restaurant, for no good reason that I could think of. Very nice waitresses, a nice setting, real china and linen, and only $8.99 to leave stuffed to the gills with good food! The chicken is good, and there was jambalaya the night we were there. That could have been spicier for my tastes. Vegetables were really good, and I had a ton o' sweet tea. I rate based on quality of food primarily, so 3 stars is something to go to when you just want to eat something good. To me 5 stars is off the charts good, unusual, and typically expensive food, not just "I really liked it". So, please, give this place a try. You won't be sorry! read more

In terms of "homestyle" cooking and buffets, this wasn't that great. We came in during off-peak lunch (around 2pm) right before they closed for the afternoon before dinner service. For $7.95 you get quite a spread of items, but most of it tasted straight out of the can and heated up, including some lima beans, beets, summer squash, etc. Nothing "special" at all. The two entrees were country fried chicken and I think either beef or ham? Can't remember for sure, but that's probably a sign that it's not worth talking about. The portions were SUPER small (they gave us randomly 3 chicken wings for two people???). They say that they provide "complimentary" seconds, but it's not really "complimentary" when you kind of have to ask for it to get a full meal. The amount of food we got was sufficient for one person and we were two hungry guys after a long day of driving! Through the twists and turns of life, one of my nearest and dearest besties now lives in Statesboro. There's no Publix, Target or liquor store in town, so I don't know how she does it. If I'm being honest, though, it does have its charms...this restaurant among them. On Sundays, her father-in-law invites the family (and us out-of-towners) out for the family-style lunch here. The resto is located in a beautiful old house with wraparound porch, and a big tree out front - like something out of an story book. The decor inside is authentically and effortlessly shabby/country chic. And the tables all have crisp white linens, and fresh flowers. Oh, but the food...there's always the basics: fried chicken (among the best I've EVER had), roast beef, mashed potatoes & gravy, biscuits (very close to biscuit perfection). Among the sides - there's always a few, and they vary each time I've gone - are mac & cheese, okra, butter beans, rice, and corn. Tried them all except the rice, and they're pretty good. My wife and I stumbled upon this when we decided to detour off I-95 on our way to Columbia, S.C. from Florida. We looked forward to eating here, but were left a little flat by the experience. The old house has great potential, but we got the impression it had seen better days. The porch seemed a bit seedy with peeling paint and the foyer had gumball machines by the front door. A little decoratoin of flowers or something would make a big difference with the atmoshpere. The floors and rug (in the room we were in) were black with grime and kinda sticky to walk on - very unappealing. The Southern fare served family style was average at best - actually below average when considering what we can get even in the non-descript storefronts where we live. The fried chicken was very tasty and well prepared. The green beans seemed right out of a #10 can and were quite bland. The squash had an odd taste. Nothing really very interesting. The place lacked energy. Wine and beer were on the on menu on website, but the owners gave up their liquor license. Place was empty for a Saturday night. We hope better days will return. It wouldn't take much to take it up a star or two. (I don't like to be negative, so I gave three stars, but really think it was a fairly bland 2-star experience). read more
