For context, I have been using firewood for heat for the last 38 years. I've been splitting and…read morestacking wood for about that long. I have a pretty good sense of what is fair when purchasing firewood, and I know what a cord looks like. A cord is the only unit of measure used in the buying and selling of firewood. Anyone in that business should know what a cord is and should know how to deliver a full cord to the customer. This should go without saying, but there seems to be some disconnect once cash has left my hands and wood has been dumped. I always stack my wood neatly in a wood shed to keep it dry and easy to access safely. Because of the size and shape of my woodshed it is easy to measure the wood once it is stacked. A cord of firewood should measure 4 Feet by 4 Feet by 8 Feet neatly stacked. There is no other version of this measurement, it is 128 cubic feet of firewood. For visual reference that is a load of wood big enough to fill the back of a full sized pickup truck and stacked as tall as the cab. I had purchased firewood from Mike in years past, paid cash, never had a problem. The last two years when I purchased firewood I did not get a full cord of wood (despite paying cash for a full cord). Last year I brought this up and he asked if I would like him to deliver more right away. I told him no, he'd always been good to me, but I would expect a full cord next year and a little extra to make up for what I didn't get. He agreed. This year, when I arranged delivery of a cord of hardwood I reminded him of this agreement he said "no problem". After neatly stacking this years delivery and measuring, it was not a full cord. It measured about 105 cubic feet (about the same as the previous year. OK, so first time shame on them, 2nd time, shame on me.... When I asked for the balance of the 20 or so cubic feet I got shorted last year and the 20 or so cubic feet I got shorted this year I was told "Your killing me, I don't care to do business with people that stack every stick and then bitch about it". 40 cubic feet is not an insignificant amount of firewood, that's about 1/3 of a cord. When you're charging $300 for a cord of hardwood, that's $100 worth of firewood (I know basic math). Berating a customer for asking for the product they paid for is completely unprofessional. I cannot recommend this business for firewood purchase.
