Marie's Beauty Supply is my go-to spot for all things hair and beauty. They have an incredible…read morevariety of products -- from natural hair care to wigs, braiding hair, skincare, and more. Honestly. I wish I could give this store zero stars. I just moved to the area from another state…read moreand despite the fact that the store is cluttered and unorganized; I was ready to claim this beauty supply store as my go to mainly because it's black owned. However, I will not and I'd much rather drive to Virginia to support a more professional business. As soon as I walk through the door I'm greeted with "can you leave that outside." The lady, who I assume is the owner, had been referring to my small dog. I offered to have my dog sit at the door if she was concerned about her using the restroom on her floor (which was understandable even though my dog is well trained. I know she doesn't know that so fine.) she replied with "I'd rather you not have it in here at all." I understand not everyone is a dog person but it comes down to how you address situations in your establishment that determines the overall success of a business. She was flat out RUDE and unprofessional! I left without buying anything because why would I support someone that doesn't even know how to talk to people. Reason #5 why we (black people) make it difficult to support black businesses.

Hunnybunny is perhaps my favorite Capitol Hill business, for three reasons:…read more 1] I love the products. I exclusively buy body butter and deodorant from Hunnybunny, but I have tried many of their products and haven't disliked anything. Everything is personally made in-house (that's sort of a pun--this business is located within a small rowhouse!), and it is all natural and made with love. I have sensitive skin and I have even used their products on my baby boy, without any fear that it would cause a reaction. 2] The family who owns Hunnybunny are so warm, personable, and real. I have enjoyed talking to every one of them in the past few years since I've been a regular customer, including the kids, who own the business. :) 3] My husband's favorite scent in the world is Hunnybunny's cherry almond body butter, which I put on every night before bed. He always says that it makes him want cherry pie. When I run out, he makes an effort to stop by and get me a replacement, just because HE loves the smell so much. We always visit in person but I am happy to know that online ordering is possible as well, just in case we ever move out of DC!

Their soap smells lovely and is so moisturizing, especially the rose clay one -- I was rubbing my skin in amazement at how soft it felt after! I have sensitive skin and eczema, but haven't had any issues with their soap. Their products ship fast and come in cute packaging that brightens your day! You can get the soap wrapped in flower seed paper that can be planted! This brand is so thoughtful and the care they put into their products is apparent.

I went into the store looking for a mini perfume set and walked out with a mini perfume set and a…read morefree "full size" bottle. I didn't even know there was a promotion so I was pretty excited when I stumbled on it. The perfume gift set was $90 and the perfume I chose from the set was worth $105 so I saved even on the "full" bottle - which was honestly only 1oz, but still. The gift set had Gucci Bloom, Burberry Goddess, Carolina Herrera Good Girl Blush and 4 other bottles that had 2 roll on perfumes and 2 spray perfumes. Unfortunately, you need to buy the set before you can open the pack to pull out the coupon and that's where things went south for me. I opened the pack in store right after buying the pack and asked for Burberry Goddess. The lady at the counter said it was lunch time so they were short-staffed and I would need to wait for the other staff in store to come get the perfume for me... understandable. It took about 10 minutes for someone to show up. When he did, he said he couldn't find it. The coupon offers the option to order it online and have it shipped for free. Even with the directions on the card, I told them to show me how to do it online to make sure I didn't have difficulties after leaving the store and sure enough, you can't redeem it online with the instructions on the coupon. They said I would need to go to the website, click on customer support then tell them about my purchase, give them the code and my address to get it sent. The risk for further complications seemed unnecessarily high so I asked if they could pull up stores in the area to see if anyone had the perfume in store and I would just walk there to pick it up. When they did, it showed their store had it. They keep all their perfumes locked up so it's not like someone stole it however, after another 15 minutes, it couldn't be found. To be fair, she called the nearest store to confirm they had it before sending me there. As happy as I am for the score and money saved and as much as I appreciate their efforts to help me, I spent a total of 30minutes, mostly just standing in a corner and waiting for something that still wasn't found. It would be nice if they kept better inventory and saved customers the time and trouble of waiting for something they don't have. Will I go back? Unfortunately.
