With three younger kids, finding somewhere that they enjoy and that the adults also appreciate can sometimes be a challenge. On this visit, my cousin's wife recommended Surfside Sandwich Shoppe, so we met her and her two kids there and also invited some friends who live on the island. The first challenge was actually finding the place. Even with GPS, it's surprisingly easy to drive past because it's difficult to see until you're almost directly alongside it. Parking was also very limited and a little challenging with our group. Inside, most of the space is occupied by the kitchen and bar, while the outdoor seating area is considerably larger. The outdoor area worked well for the kids, with a chalkboard and some large stackable toys to keep them occupied. I ordered the Cuban Press, while the kids went with burgers. They also have a pretty extensive drink menu. We tried the margaritas, which were okay, although smaller than I expected. Unfortunately, the food took a very long time to come out, and a couple of things got lost along the way. They forgot our mozzarella and marinara appetizer as well as the broccoli salad I had ordered as my side. My Cuban Press was very good, although it's not a traditional Cuban sandwich since they use pulled pork. Authentic or not, I enjoyed the sandwich and the accompanying sauce. The kids were happy with their burgers as well. I didn't get a chance to try the shrimp bisque, but others in our group had it and reported that it was excellent. Overall, there were things we liked, particularly my sandwich and the outdoor area for the kids, but the very long food wait and forgotten items made the experience less enjoyable than it could have been. With a larger group of kids, it also wasn't necessarily the easiest place for us. We might come back without the kids and sit inside to enjoy the bar, or I'd consider grabbing a sandwich to-go in the future. The Cuban was good enough that I'd certainly eat it again.

Wife got a beef rib, sausage and the same sides. To be very frank, two people could split one plate and be very satisfied. A desert is included and the choices were a couple of different cobblers and two or three pudding varieties. The meats: OMG. The beef rib slipped out of the meat when my wife picked up the bone. What remained on the plate could be cut with her plastic spoon. Smokey, SUPER tender and just glorious. The brisket was just as tender--cutting not really needed. It pulls apart. And like the rib, flavor on point...just incredible smokey meat flavor. I went in hungry and could only eat half of my order. The sausage was just as wonderful with a firm snap of the casing without being chewy. We both thought the potato salad was one of the best BBQ joint potato salads we've had. I thought the beans (a bit of BBQ flavor) were a little spicy, wife didn't think so at all. Even the onions and pickles were top notch....they make their own pickles. The drive from Corpus was to go here. We didn't have any other reason to go to Woodsboro or the area. TOTALLY worth the drive and if you're simply in the Refugio/Woodsboro area...this is THE place to go. And as a grocery/meat market...quaint with some of the friendliest people you're likely to meet. The meat deals they offer look great. We WILL DEFINITELY make the drive again. BTW, we've got enough leftovers for another full meal each. (I ate my leftovers on Monday for lunch, reheated it's just as tender and flavorful.) What a treasure Woodsboro has in Tuttles!
