For $5 I sampled long-lost recipes from the late 1800s, made from produce grown on the Plum Grove property's gardens which are maintained by local Master Gardeners. The event had that farm-to-table vibe with long rows of picnic tables set up in the lawn, centerpieces cut from the property's gardens, a brassy live band, and of course... the food. Tomato & Corn Relish Salad, Intensely Tomato Roasted Pepper soup (served gazpacho-style), Rhubarb Bread, Sauerkraut Apple Cake for dessert, and Patriot's Punch lemonade were some of my favorite dishes. After wandering the grounds and talking to Master Gardeners about their techniques for raising their beautiful heirloom plants organically (many of their varieties were sourced from Seed Savers in Decorah, IA), I went home a very happy camper with a $.50 recipe book of all the things I'd sampled in tow.

It's a two room schoolhouse and they give free tours by reservation only. It's handicap accessible and actually looks pretty sweet on a nice day! The bathrooms are kind of gross. They sell cheap beer (hi, Hamms and PBR)-- you're not getting a craft cocktail here. But like, when you're going to see Smile Empty Soul or a Lil Peep Cover Band-- do you want your music venue any other way? I came Saturday to a concert. I danced my butt off. To see how people years ago travelled around and to learn about these vehicles was so much fun. This place is probably not the best place for small kids especially if you are wanting to read every sign. It is kid friendly however they may get bored with it after the first 5 minutes. This is a must if you are in the area. I highly recommend this place. Plenty of restaurants near by if you are looking for food afterwards.

What can you say about this gem of a theater but has not already been said? Having worked at movie…read moretheaters throughout college I can tell you that the pressure for the big movie theaters to play the biggest movies that will sell out or bring it the largest crowd is, is immense. Those theaters rarely take any kind of risk with a small movie that may or may not be the next Hollywood blockbuster. Honestly, they really are a blockbuster hit but are often really good movies that have a voice which should be heard. That is where Film Scene comes in. It fills the void created by monstrous movie theaters which are more concerned with the quality of their heated reclining seats as opposed to the quality of the movie. Now, you should know, when you go to see a movie at this theater, do not expect super comfortable seats. There are some good seats in the back of the theater but the closer you get to the screen, the worse they are, so be sure you get there early. The concession stand is reasonably priced with a good selection of candy, decent popcorn, and a wonderful selection of beer. I would also highly recommend the rooftop viewing of any movie they show. It is really awesome up there. Get some tickets, grab some popcorn, twizzlers, a cold beer, and enjoy a really good movie lovingly presented by true film lovers.
