While my go-to is Tyler (the owner), I've tried a few others on occasion (when I forgot to make an appointment in advance). All are great. They're chatty if you want them to be, quiet if you're not a talker. If you're lucky there will be one of their dogs in the shop! But what I've liked about them from the beginning is their unwavering support of the LGBTQ+ community. While I don't know all of the staff's orientations, it doesn't matter. This is my boyfriend's barber and I went with him when he went for a recent haircut. First of all, women's salons need to be this fun! A sign over the door says the phrase from "The Lord of the Rings": "Speak, friend, and enter" in Elvish. The fun continues with the Renaissance Faire -meets-comic con vibes inside, including the trading cards you can collect from talking to various staff or purchasing different products (if you collect 12 you get a free T-shirt). The fellow at the front desk happily told me all about them. I had actually come along to check out some of their River Peak Apothecary products, since my boyfriend gave up the lip butter he bought last time to me. I picked up a replacement for him as well as a couple of other flavors. I can already tell these are going to be great in the winter! Very rich without feeling greasy. As to the haircut, my boyfriend has been happy with Ximena. He said he doesn't care for small talk during haircuts, and she was laser focused on the task, so if you're an introvert in need of a cut, there's someone to take care of you too! I was looking for a local barber for my haircut and beard trim. I had previously gone to SportsClips for my cuts, which I have no issues with; I was just looking for a bit more pampering and attention to my beard. After reading a bunch of reviews, I decided to go with Beardsgaard. It was a little bit of a hassle to have to create an account to make an appointment, but certainly not insurmountable. I was hoping for something the same week, but they were booked, so I picked a slot the following week. I had really high expectations upon arriving. Fortunately, they did not disappoint. The shop's atmosphere is fun and the staff is friendly. I was greeted immediately upon arrival and had to wait just a few minutes to get a chair. Anthony was my barber and he did a fantastic job all around. It was a great experience and I'm definitely going back. My only real complaint is that their lotions seem to have a clove scent to them, which I'm not fond of. Ok, so I waited a day to write this review to give myself some time to think about the whole experience. Here's my take. If you have a beard this is the place to go. As I looked down the aisle of barber chairs it occurred to me that I was the only patron with hair, and the only patron without a beard. Seriously. The other three guys were bald as an eagle, except for their facial hair. Okay. Don't panic. The young lady who was my stylist was busy working away, so let's see what happens. The moment of truth as she spun me around to get a look in the mirror. I thought not terrible. Not exactly what I wanted but it wasn't a disaster. So off I go to the register. $50.00. Before a 20% tip - didn't want to penalize the young lady. Ouch. No shampoo, no conditioner, and a cut that I would describe as a "clean up" or trim. I didn't ask the price in advance because I thought, well, my professional hair stylist in Chicago charges 50.00 so I'm thinking 30 bucks give or take. Bottom line: Great, hip shop for all things facial hair. Probably great if you want a hipster haircut too. But, if you want a basic haircut with standard shampoo/conditioner you might want to reconsider. read more

This is that magical location that once you enter... you are a member for life. At least this is my current feeling after being here twice. The location is easy enough to find. The times I attend.. there are plenty of street parking in the front but I heard rumors of a parking lot in the back. You walk in and you are greeted right away from whomever is working the front desk at the time. Location is very warm and friendly. They give you the quick gist of what is around while you want for your haircut and then you wait. Making an appointment is highly recommended and you will have to do it months in advance. So far, I haven't had any issues since I know I will need a haircut sometime between 1-2 months after getting one. But this location and the people cutting your hair are very friendly and love talking. They give you plenty of tips and advice about your hair and even tips about what product to use and how to style it even better. Granted I do not have a lot of experience with getting my hair cut by professionals since I used to be cheap and let my no-experienced mother cut it. Sadly..the wife wanted to move far away so she (my mother... not wife) is no longer an option. But I like how this location takes their time to make sure you are in the love with your hair when you leave. This isnt a Rush-Rush. Cut 10 people in 5 minutes so instead-of-going-to-the-bathroom-you-instead-get-your-hair-cut-and-hope-the-boss-wont-notice-you-gone place. This is a location when you let wonderfully talented and friendly people make you from The Beast into a Prince or Princess. Overall...this is a location that I actually enjoy going to and I honestly cant wait to return. You remember how when you were younger and hated the dentist. But one day... you meet the greatest dentist who makes you smile and laugh and make it painless and gives you a toy. Then you ask mommy and/or daddy that you want to return tomorrow? Well, Beardsgaard, ya' broke me. I got my hair cut at frickin' SportClips in a series of events that had me feeling like that whole "*record scratch* *freeze frame* Yup, that's me, you're probably wondering how I ended up in this situation" meme. Well, let me tell you. I first discovered Beardsgaard when they were set up at a beer event. I thought, "Oh wow doing shaves and haircuts at a beer festival seems like a cool way to promote your shop," and mentally bookmarked them for the next time I needed my hair cut. It was absurdly difficult to get an appointment, so I called and was encouraged to utilize their walk-in service which at the time had a multi-hour wait. I figured maybe there was just a ton of people from said beer event who were also trying to get in, so I just brought my laptop and got some work done while I waited quite literally hours to get my hair cut. It seemed pretty strange, but the cut I got was great, so, whatever. The next time I got my haircut there I guess I was lucky enough to be looking at their schedule online as they opened up new appointment slots and was able to grab an appointment a few days out. Once again, I went in, got a great cut, and just sort of figured my first experience must have been an anomaly. ...Then I spent two months attempting to get another appointment. There isn't any good way on their online booking software to just choose whatever the next available time is, so you have to check each day to see when there are openings. Beardsgaard seems to be booked well over a month out. I eventually sent them an email asking if there was a better way to get an appointment, and got a fairly baffling response. The first suggestion was to sign up for their newsletter for notification when new times get added weekly. (I'm not super into this as I really try to minimize the amount of email lists I'm on and automated emails I get to retain inbox sanity.) Second was to utilize the walk-in service, stressing to come early because they fill up quickly. Third was to book multiple appointments up to ten weeks out. What really had me scratching my head was the inclusion of a link to the shop's Indiegogo campaign where they're raising money to expand the shop. How is it that a barber shop, which is so successful that it's impossible to get an appointment needs a crowdfunding campaign? It really feels like Beardsgaard actually needs some sort of business consultant to come in and optimize what they're doing, whether that's raising prices, moving to a new location, or whatever else. What's even more strange is that looking at historical Yelp reviews, it being impossible to get in isn't a new problem. This is a business that has been absolutely slammed for years. For whatever reason this didn't dissuade me from continuing to try to get my hair cut here, and I was still haunting the site daily for either a low number of walk-ins waiting or an available appointment. When we got that really bad snow earlier this week, I figured it was my time to strike. Surely no one would be crazy enough to go drive to get their hair cut in a blizzard. I checked the site, it showed only one person waiting, so I quickly hopped in the shower and got ready to go at around 4:00 PM. I figured I'd call ahead just in case they were closing early due to the snow, and found out that the site apparently wasn't updating properly and there were actually so many people waiting that they thought I might get my hair cut by 7:00 or 7:30 PM. A 3 to 3.5 hour wait in a blizzard. Unfortunately, I had things to do that evening that didn't involve sitting at a barber shop all night, and I couldn't really believe I had even gotten to a point where that sounded remotely reasonable. It had been months since I was able to successfully get my hair cut at Beardsgaard, and I hit my limit. I drove up to SportClips, was in a chair instantly, and on my way back home a half hour later. After being so deep in Beardsgaard Stockholm syndrome this was a very, very strange experience to just be able to go somewhere and get your hair cut without obsessively stalking a web page or waiting all day. I like Beardsgaard a lot, the staff is super cool, and I love the vibe. It's just too frustrating trying to get your hair cut. My work schedule is too irregular to be able to confidently book an appointment for a hair cut ten weeks out (which seems absurd to need to do anyway), and no hair cut is worth waiting three hours for. I guess they're closing in March for renovations, so I suppose I'll try again sometime after that. In the meantime, check out Beardsgaard if you have a dull enough life that you want to add powergaming trying to get your hair cut into the mix. Otherwise, I'd recommend just saving yourself the stress and going somewhere else. read more

Inadequate.. Not them, my facial hair. In my 20's I could grow a mustache.. maybe not a magnificent one.. but a mustache nonetheless. But the beard thing.. it just wasn't happening. I decided then I like being clean shaven. Recently, we went on vacation and I let it grow for a few days.. and my lovely wife says.. "I like it, you should let it grow for a while, see how it looks.. that is, if you want to" So, I'm thinking if she likes it.. that good enough for me. Problem is.. I don't know what to do with a beard. And I'm miserable.. it itches.. and did anyone ever tell you that it tickles when the wind blows through it? It's weird. So, a friend told me that I should try Beadrsgaard, because they would shape the beard to best fit my face and tell me how to maintain it. I let it get scruffy so they had something to work with. I had Eric the first time and he didn't really make a lot of changes to my hair or my beard.. he trimmed everything up and I seriously ended up with a great haircut and a straight razor finished beard. Good enough that when Lisa said "that looks great" I did some selfies so that I could show, rather than tell what I wanted. I had to ask Eric questions about stuff, so my learning experience was limited to what I could think to ask. Pick up some balm (really helped with the itching) and some ideas on how to trim between appointments. This place is really busy and they got some rules. There were no appointments available, I decided to brave "walk in Wednesday" (I was told that I could wait an hour or two) and I got in right away. (woohoo!) $30 bucks and I walked out happy The place is cool, old fashioned barbershop with a decidedly hipster vibe... Oh, and there's a cool dog around sometimes.. who doesn't like a dog lover? I was happy enough (4-5 * worth) that I went back in another month for a redo. I had an appointment this time, went back to Eric (because I like him) and asked for a clipper and shear cut and a straight razor beard trim. (Showed the picture!) Not so happy this time, everything was rushed.. the hair was a bit off and I'm not sure that I got the Straight Razor Beard Trim.. (they use a straight razor all the time) The cashier asked me if the straight razor ever touched my neck... I walked out with the vague sense that I had really overpaid for what I got this time. ($35.00) Lisa said it wasn't as good as before. I'm probably not going to make the trek over here again (kind of a shame) I recently had a cut and trim at another establishment.. quite a bit less money and my wife said the cut is much better than the last one. read more

I totally forgot about this place and was going to these "in/out hair cut joints" who really don't care about the quality of cut you get. I made a appointment and went here today. Walking in you're taken back to a time of relaxation and a great vibe. Cool music playing, awesome art work on the walls and the owners dog acknowledges you with a wag, how nice! My stylist Jackie was the best! Even though I really didn't know what I wanted, she did! Gave me a perfect haircut and neck shave. While getting your haircut, you can admire the art on the walls, antiques and all the potions and elixirs for sale, really cool place. Try scheduling a haircut. Would you like a haircut three months from now? Because 3 months apart is the only open available dates they'll offer you to schedule. Not to worry, maybe you can jump to a Great Clips in between your irregular appointments with Beardsgaard. OR, maybe you'll try their "Walk-In Wednesdays"... * Walk Ins: Non-existent. Sure, they tote they have a Walk-In Wednesday. But when you walk-in and find the only free floating, non-scheduled employee spends an hour and a half on one haircut trying to build her clientele, you'll quickly realize their walk-in Wednesday are there to appease those who cannot get scheduled out for three months. Good luck, you'll get through reading and memorizing every word of War and Peace quicker than you will a haircut with a walk-in... * Business Acumen: As any good business, their end goal should be to offer a service, build and maintain a client base through customer service and lastly turn a profit to keep all of the above afloat. If Beardsgaard is truly in the business of being in business, they'd quickly summarize that they've outgrown their current model. Rather than spending their net-profits on non-value added items such as; a wall mural, a pet lizard and Comic Book Memorabilia, one would think to serve clients and continuation of growth would be investments into additional square footage and stylists. Compared to other barber shops whose trims could be compared to warm milk on shredded wheat, Beardsgaard was a vigorous Viking ale. While barber shops seem to be more popular right now, many are staffed by old gents who wouldn't know a modern cut if it burned down their village. Not so Beardgaarde. Their apprentice, Scott, sharpened up my beard and clipped my short hair to the point it no longer looks entirely accidental, and in fact has me ready for a family reunion without looking like I'm my own grandfather. I got to say that I really enjoyed my experience here. I've had facial hair forever now. I never had anyone tell me how to grow it right. I know it seems weird, it felt weird to even type that. Facial hair grows if you don't shave it. But it doesn't always grow well. I started off with a goatee when I was in my 20's. I have one of those faces that without facial hair I look like a scary teenager. Facial hair gave me a way to end that. I didn't know the first thing about how to shave it or when. Now I have a full beard, and need to trim it down every few weeks because it starts to looks unmanaged. But I see a lot of people that have great long beards. Tyler took the time to help explain things like my neck line. Also, how to care for the beard. I get some Beard dandruff. He walked me through what to do to stop it. What's the difference between balm and oil? Tyler helped me with that. They have tons of products for beard and head. Happened to catch a rare cancellation on a Saturday. While my beard cut is one of the best I've ever had, my haircut was not at all what I wanted. I told my barber (can't remember his name) I work outside and like my hair long to help keep my neck and ears warm - scarves & balaclavas are not an option - and that I don't like to put product in my hair. I wound up walking out of there looking like I walked out of 1939 - with Mil-Spec edges and a 4 inch top that only looks good with a handful of pomade plastering it in place. I've always been one to just groom myself, but my recent decision to let it all grow out paired with some upcoming job interviews left me a little on the scruffy side and unsure on how to handle it. Enter Beardsgaard Barbers. I had an easy time signing up online on short notice and booked an appointment with Erik. I came in, told him what I wanted, and he went to work while we chatted. The shop is awesome, with lots of old-school barber stuff and a ton of stuff that will bring any 80's kid down memory lane. After getting a trim and shaping, we checked out the beard balms. The self-described candy store had an offering of products from balms, oils, soaps, and waxes to t-shirts, magnets, and stickers. It was overwhelming in the greatest way and I wanted to try everything. Just like being in a candy store. I ended up with a few balms: the pirate (on Erik's suggestion), the gentleman (on the suggestion of my love of smoke and whiskey), and Odin (on the suggestion that it makes you smell like a viking). Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to try the pirate or the gentleman yet, because I absolutely love this Odin scent!
