Bear Creek is the best!!

If you're looking for a place for horseback riding camps for your kiddos or lessons for yourself or the house lover in your family, this is the place to go! Located just west of Brodie Lane off 1626, Bear Creek is convenient to south Austin. Linda and her husband Eddie have been running this place since the eighties. The stables and the staff are unpretentious and places the safety of horse and humans first. Horses are so will cared for, they live in to their thirties and forties if that tells you anything. My daughter has been attending camp and taking lessons for the last five years. Her riding teacher, Catherine Campbell understands kids and horses and is an amazing teacher. I have never heard her utter a negative word towards any student. They teach more than riding, they also teach horse management. This gives potential owners a true understanding of what it takes to own a horse. Kids don't always understand that horses can live a long time and require a huge commitment. Aside from lessons, Bear Creek offers summer, spring and winter camps. Summer camps are split between riding, swimming and crafts. They also lease horses and offer boarding. So if you're looking for an education with a reasonable price for your horse lover, come check them out!!

This is Snickers- beautiful well suited horse for jumping

So happy I choose this place for lessons! I'm an adult rider - I've been riding Western my whole life and I wanted some lessons in English. I'm looking to learn how to jump. I had a great experience here and the horses were awesome. We had a sub teacher my first night and she took really good care of us. Can't wait to go back! No matter what age this is a great place!

I did a wild cave tour without the extra charges that Longhorn collects. At Longhorn, our guide, Johnson did an amazing job with our small group of six people for the 10:45 AM tour. My brother and I initially registered for the 11:00 AM tour and am glad that we were suggested another time. We passed by the 11:00 AM tour and they had 40+ people in their group. Johnson showed us cool geological formations. We saw dolomite, calcium bicarbonate, chert, limestone, geodes, stalagmites, stalactites, and quartz crystals. Johnson is somewhat funny; he had a bit of quirky and dry humor. I enjoyed the history of the caverns, but some of it I thought was interesting. It was really delightful to learn that in the 1800's, before the CCC got involved, the locals would dance and play music turning the cave into an auditorium of entertainment. Johnson said that if certain geological formations glows, it is growing. Very catchy phase for memory. I got to see a few bats hanging out. They were tricolor bats which are smallest bats. The cave is cool, but thankfully not slippery. I was wearing no grip support shoes, but I didn't fall or have the urge to fall. There are mats on the floor of the cave to prevent falls. Johnson gave us more time to look around and admire the geology. My brother and I weren't required to bring our own flashlights. Johnson had a flashlight, but forgot to grab the blacklights. What I find is strange is that this is a state park that you cannot renew your state park pass at. This park headquarters is very different than the rest considering that there's a third party company handing the cave tours, they sell ice-cees, popcorn, and the gift shop is very big and vast. The others don't have this. It is questionable to me. I was told that I needed to go to Inks Lake to renew my pass. The cave tours are very pricey. Kickapoo Caverns tour was very affordable at $10. You can use the park pass. You can't get your state park passport stamped at Longhorn Caverns either. It seems like Longhorn Caverns is more for profit and the history about the cavern could be overly exaggerated to attract customers. My opinion. It was hard to believe half of the things what Johnson was telling us. There's one portion of geological formation in the cave that is "dead" because in year 1919, the locals went exploring by touching the formation it "killed" it. I preferred Kickapoo Caverns and the Caverns of Sonora a lot more. Even Inner Space Caverns and Natural Bridge were very exciting to see. Longhorn is cool, but didn't give me that WOW-factor, but I still had a ton of fun on a Sunday morning.

They have several in the regional area but my review is for the Gruene location. The staff are really fun and helpful (you know like when you're getting out and fall on your rear and they help you out of the water). Rental rates are fair and the tubes are clean.

I will start by saying, I don't entirely blame the business for what happened during our float, and…read morethey did try to remedy it by giving us free passes to come back - or to use another location. The main takeaways for my post if you don't want to read (TLDR): 1. This location should NOT be advertised as a float - it is seriously very dangerous when the water is low, we all popped our tubes and had small injuries from the rocks - I am glad with my injuries being small - it could have been SOOO much worse 2. Aggressive turtles and water snakes everywhere 3. The entire float route is surrounded by private property so there is literally no way to exit unless you go to the end .. The day started out great - the Gruene location was nice, we did not pay for parking as others have mentioned (not sure why we didn't). The main complaint about the actual location where you sign in and get your tubes are the rest rooms. They were not clean and the water did not work. Also, the entire place was run by children which was very weird to me. There was no one over the age of 20 working the day (Sunday) we went. A kid that looked to be literally 13 was the one to help us into the river and didn't say a word to us- just looked at us and put the tubes in the water (which I understand - I was shy at that age as well). My main concern and the reason why I am posting is that this route (in my opinion) should NOT be used by this company as an advertised float. It was genuinely super dangerous. I have floated multiple times throughout Texas and have not encountered rocks and rapids like this. We got stuck multiple times on the rocks and it took us 3 hours to just get half way to the first exit. After the second set of rocks we were DONE. Our tubes had all popped and several of us had injuries (nothing super serious - bruises and cuts from the rocks - one girl hurt her back pretty badly and had spasms) . We called the company and asked for someone to pick us up (to which another child answered the phone). They offered to bring us new tubes - which they did. The kid that brought us the tubes told us we were two hours from the exit (which apparently was not correct). Because they wouldn't come pick us up and told me we had to tube down to the end where the exit is - we decided the best option was to call the non-emergency number for the Sheriff. She told us to call 911 to get more precise coordinates for our location - which we then did. An ambulance came and the EMT's found us and were able to escort us out of the back of people's homes (we did not want to trespass on these people's properties - also there were giant staircases we were unsure if the one girl with the back injury could even make it up). Everyone was fine, the EMT's dropped us off at the entrance to Rockin R - which we were then greeted by the location's owners. They told us it had been a misunderstanding and they didn't realize someone was injured - which I literally told them over the phone twice. After the confusion subsided, they did give us free passes to come back - which I won't be using. I understand these things happen and we did sign waivers - but the company should not be using this route. Someone will get seriously injured on these rocks one of these days. I guarantee it..

I've seen the good, bad, and ugly. Everything about CFA is top notch. You actually warm up here. You don't just do 10 cleans to get ready for a workout with 1000 cleans in it. You go into every workout and lift feeling prepared mentally and physically. I always felt like the programming was set with a direction and a goal towards a lift or workout. There are multiple for classes ranging from mobility, Olympic lifting, CrossFit, Hyrox, and even classes for soon to be mothers. I have very rarely ever seen that type of diversity in a gym throughout the whole country. The gym is organized. Everything has a spot. I've been to gyms where everything was just tossed in the corner, but that is not the case here. All the coaches are knowledgeable and helpful to every person regardless of their ability. The members are all welcoming. There is no ego in this gym and that's what I have loved about CFA. There are meet ups outside of the gym. It's meant to be a community. CFA is all the good things you'd want out of a CrossFit gym. It is truly a special place and I'd recommend this gym to anyone who is in the Austin area.

I've now been working with Dylan a couple times a week for almost a year. I can't believe how strong and physically confident I've become working with Dylan. My body can now do things I would have never imagined it could do. He has helped me gain new strength after being diagnosed with Osteoporosis a few years ago, and has been helping me rebuild my health from a year of breast cancer treatments in 2017. I feel sure that when I am next tested for the Osteoporosis it will show that I've gained new bone since the last test.. I am confident that the strength training I've been doing with Dylan is the best thing I could be doing for my body and my health. I told Dylan when we started that I wanted to be a woman that could get up and down off the floor with ease at 90. I know that I will be that woman because I now know what my body is capable of when I exercise it properly and regularly. I feel great, I have more energy, I look young and fit, and I know that I'm a strong and healthy 60 year young woman. I can not recommend Dylan and CrossFit Austin enough. It's NOT your typical CrossFit Gym! I suggest you give it a try, whether it's for their group training classes or personal training.
