I love good homemade craft ice cream and rarely find it. I don't buy ice cream unless it's premium and homemade. So I looked forward to my visit to Bean & Basil. I was willing to pay the $7.50 for a scoop ($9.22 with tip). BUT sadly I had to throw it away after three bites. I wanted to love it. The Coffee Butter Crunch was WAY too sweet and the coffee wasn't a prominent flavor. The sugar overpowered all of it. It needed a fraction of the sugar. (Maybe a production mistake happened because it was just over the top sweet). My husband tried one bite and wanted to spit it out. I didn't think to ask for a sample nor did she offer one. I definitely would have chosen differently. The young lady at the counter probably couldn't hear well because of the loud music. I'm glad there was outside seating. I didn't go back inside to complain nor ask for a refund. It was my mistake for not getting a sample. Really, it's SO rare for me to go out for ice cream that I forgot that getting a sample is acceptable. I'd recommend for the employees to encourage having a sample before a costly mistake is made. Also, reduce the sugar and let the ingredients work their magic. I'll try again next time I'm in Clayton--and ask for a sample first. read more

While visiting Clayton I enjoyed ice cream here each evening for three days. I tried a different flavor each time, and that was easy because the ice cream is made on site in small batches and the flavors change as soon as they run out. The first night I had the brown butter cookie dough which was amazing. Second night I had raspberry chocolate: also fantastic. The third night I had plain chocolate which was one of the best chocolates I've ever had. The shop will give you samples to taste before you order and they do some other things (ice cream sandwiches, pup cups, etc), but I had the single scoop each time. One night my cup included a little wedge of waffle cone; not sure if they were all supposed to have it or if it was something special that day, or with that flavor. This ice cream is not cheap but it is amazingly delicious. read more

We spotted this ice cream shop while stopping by for dinner in downtown Clayton and were intrigued by the variety of gushing online reviews. I distinctly recall my friend reading aloud one about "choosing a favorite flavor is like choosing a favorite child". Talk about memorable! We didn't make it before they closed at 8pm so we had it for lunch the next day #girllunch. The store is run by a husband and wife couple - we chatted with the husband while we were tasting flavors and found out each ice cream takes 36 hours to make! It was so hard to choose flavors to order, but thankfully they offered half scoop splits (when each half scoop was basically the size of 1.5 salt and straw scoops ). I got the brown butter cookie dough and the coffee toffee crunch. I tasted my friends cookies and cream and the cookie calamity(?)(a bunch of cookies thrown into a vanilla batter). It was a close call but the coffee toffee won out on top. The wife also makes phat cookies for sale - I saw a brown butter ccc and a pumpkin snickerdoodle and am kicking myself I didn't order one to try. My friends and I were in town for a wedding and were looking for some ice cream. When we saw the enthusiastic reviews on Yelp for this location, we knew we had to try it. It was all we could talk about when planning our next day -- we even joked that we were more excited to try this than attend the wedding. Were we even joking? Unsure. The owners were super nice and explained to us that the ice creams take 36+ hours to make! Sounds like the flavors sometimes rotate based on what they are in the mood to make -- lucky for me, they had a special flavor available: cookie calamity. I paired this along with Blackberry crumble, though it was certainly a difficult decision to make. Lucky for us all, they offer half scoops, which honestly was so generous it felt more like a full scoop. They were delicious and not overwhelmingly sweet /- just the way I like it! And topped with the wafers seen in the image, free of charge. The interior is super clean and refreshing, and there was outdoor seating available for us to enjoy the beautiful weather. Wow... What a great new addition to downtown Clayton! We were lucky to stop by Bean and Basil on Monday afternoon. Charming small shop with ice cream, baked goods and cold drinks for purchase. A few seats inside and some on an outdoor patio too. Service was fast and friendly. We were thoroughly impressed with their ice cream selection. Everything is handcrafted in small batches, and you could tell the in the taste. We enjoyed the chocolate peanut butter and vanilla fudge. Very impressed! Make sure you go early because they do sell out of flavors later in the day. Can't wait to return to this delicious spot! read more

We went for an ice cream on the 4th. Lots of others had the same idea. It was packed! It was so enjoyable sitting on the their new patio under umbrellas, watching all the revelers stream in and out.
