I was genuinely excited to shop at Coastal Mermaid, and I actually had an item in my hand that I…read morewas about to purchase. Instead, we left empty-handed. I brought my two-year-old daughter in with me. She absolutely loves fashion and jewelry, so naturally she was interested in looking at and gently touching some of the jewelry. An employee expressed concern that she might break something. I immediately assured her that if my daughter broke anything, I would of course pay for it. She has never broken anything in a store, but I completely understand a small business being concerned about its merchandise and was happy to take responsibility for her. Apparently that wasn't enough. I was then told that my daughter could not touch anything. So we left. I understand asking a parent to intervene if a child is being destructive, mishandling merchandise, running wild, or actually causing a problem. That was not what was happening here. My daughter was simply interested in the things around her and exploring them as a two-year-old does, with me right beside her. Children learn how to behave in shops, restaurants, museums, churches, and other public spaces by actually being allowed to participate in society. We cannot simultaneously complain that children don't know how to behave in public while expecting parents to keep them away from anything they might be curious enough to touch. What bothered me most was that I was a paying customer. I was literally holding merchandise I intended to buy. Instead, I was made to feel that my two-year-old's presence and normal curiosity were incompatible with shopping there. Message received. We put the item back, walked out, and will spend our money somewhere that doesn't make families feel unwelcome.

LOVE this place!…read more Pros- This place isnt a normal gift store that sells a bunch of tourist crap. Theres a lot of unique jewelry and items that are quality products. They also have sections for the jewelry according to color and type which is nice. They had tshirts, silly sunglasses (leopard shaped, beer goggles, glitzy), a pirate section, a painted lobster and all very interesting for reasonable prices. Its also next to an art gallery, a super cute coffee shop and the local museum so its very conveniently located for walking around afterward. Its right next to the beach so its easy to find. They also have Chocolate Covered Key Lime Pie on a stick. I dont really like that kind of thing but my boyfriend loved it (it was 3.75 and you havta ask them to get it for you). Cons - I believe they close at five. Its on the street parking but its a block from the pier so parking is simple.

Sushi 99 and International House of Pancakes also have an outpost at this location. If you are in the mood for Mexican food or pizza, this mall also has you covered. What do you want from a mall? I guess that is up to individual interpretation, but this particular mall in my opinion has a lot to offer. I would definitely give this place a thumbs up. It has a lot to offer whether you are looking to grab something to eat, grab a drink (whether it be a coffee at Starbucks or a beer at the Brass Tap), or do a bit of shopping, this mall has got you covered. Give them a try.

I had a very disappointing experience at this boutique during a thunderstorm. My friend and I…read moreinitially came in to shop, not to change my baby, but due to the weather and the fact that my baby had a dirty diaper, I briefly stepped out to grab supplies from my car and planned to quickly and discreetly change her in the fitting room. When I returned, a staff member approached us immediately and pulled back the changing room curtain, and without any greeting or courtesy, said, "No, absolutely not. You're not going to change her here. We don't want any accidents." The tone was abrupt and dismissive. When I explained that it was pouring rain outside, she told me, "Can't you just change her in the car?" I reiterated the weather conditions, and she responded, "It's okay, you'll figure it out." There was no attempt to be understanding, no effort to offer an alternative--just a blunt refusal delivered in a rude and inconsiderate manner. To make matters worse, after addressing us this way, she turned to another customer and apologized to them, which felt humiliating and unnecessary. As a parent, I understand businesses have policies, but there is a respectful and compassionate way to communicate them. This interaction lacked basic courtesy and empathy. I left feeling embarrassed and unwelcome, and unfortunately, I will not be returning.

We recently visited Maria's Alterations to ask about hemming a dress and adjusting the sleeves. The…read moredress we brought was a simple black floor-length gown with a slit--something that could easily be worn to prom, as a bridesmaid dress, or to a cocktail event. Based on the shop's own description of handling "formalwear," we believed it would qualify. At the entrance, a sign stated the shop was by appointment only and for bridal and formalwear. Since we were already there, we stepped inside to confirm and possibly set up an appointment. Inside, the woman (presumably Maria) was sitting on her phone. She stood up when we walked in, and after we asked about the dress, her response was simply "no." There was no explanation, no apology, and no effort to help point us in a better direction. The interaction was short, dismissive, and left us feeling unwelcome. To be clear--the problem was not that the shop has limits on what it will alter. That is understandable. The problem was how it was handled. A professional response could have been as simple as, "I'm sorry, we only take bridal gowns, but you might try this other tailor." Instead, there was no kindness, no helpfulness, and no effort to provide good service. While older reviews may praise the quality of the work, our experience suggests customer service is lacking. If you are considering this shop for an important dress, especially something sentimental like a wedding gown or prom dress, think carefully before booking. Professionalism and respect are just as important as skill, and unfortunately, that was not what we experienced here.
