I went to the Beacon hotel for happy hour one Saturday a year and some months ago. We mainly hung out at the restaurant bar, but we did briefly go upstairs. At the time apparently, the bar had just been put there and they didn't have specials yet. They said they would soon. Fast forwarding to Friday, I went with my coworkers for our monthly happy hour. The roof has definitely come a long way! The view is as good as ever. My coworker and I ere the first ones there, so we claimed a section, opened the umbrella, and got some drinks. Their happy hour is from 5:00 - 6:30, and includes $5 beers, $6 wines and $7 cocktail of the day. The way the cocktail works is that there is a designated liquor special everyday, and it happened to be just plain Stoli that day. No food specials. Let's compare the rooftop's happy hour to the one that is in the hotel itself... it is from 4:00 - 7:00 everyday and includes cocktails that range from $5 to $7. I suppose you can run downstairs and grab a drink if you still want one after 6:30, just note that you have to finish it down there. You can't take it upstairs. As we got there and settled in, a DJ came and started setting up his booth. He played straight fire for the entire evening that we were there. Meanwhile, the waitress (thanks Thai!) took care of us and made sure we were good. At one point, we saw the bartender come over and start cutting some plants, and we realized that it was a mint bush, and they grow it to use fresh mint leaves for their drinks! Isn't that cool? I ended up not having any food, but those who did spoke very highly of it. For me, the Beacon rooftop is ideal for vibing to music, enjoying the weather and experiencing the view. For me, that makes up for the fact that their happy hour is super short, the $7 cocktail wasn't all that strong, and the food is a little on the expensive side. read more

*Hidden Gem Alert* Looking for a nice rooftop view with tasty apps and that extra kick of alcohol in your drinks? Well look no further. Beacon Rooftop Bar is the place to try. Last week we had our annual Staff Appreciation Day. I was expecting this place to have bland food and weak drinks, but boy I was wrong. Our office ordered several appetizers off their menu. My favorites were: the veggie egg rolls, crab cakes, mini beef sliders, grilled veggie skewers and create your own nachos display. I had at least 10 mini crab cakes. They also have great wings. I had this later in the night. On top of the nice spread, they offered us their signature Pina Colada. I know they weren't measuring the alcohol because many of my coworkers were feeling it after one drink. Even the guys mentioned it was strong. The music was okay. I was expecting more of the top 40, but it was mainly Pop! It's probably different on another day. I'll venture back to check it out before it's too cold to be on the Rooftop. read more

Walking home from dinner one night, we happened to look up and see the blue neon lights glowing from the rooftop. I figured it had to be a rooftop bar so we decided to check it out. We weren't sure how to get to the Skybar from the Beacon, so we asked a bartender who directed us to the elevators. We got to the top at 9:41 pm. The place is supposed to be open until 10 pm, but when we exited the elevator, a staff member told us they were no longer serving. We could stay up there, but couldn't order anything. We thought perhaps we could just order a drink from the bartender, but he also said no, they were closed. The atmosphere and view is breathtaking. You are up so high that you can see the lights from all over the city. It's dark up there but I especially like the blue neon lights that give the space an elegant glow. There's plenty of seating and each individual seating area allowed for at least a bit of privacy. There is also a TV and seating area right near the entrance. It's not a great location because people can get loud watching television and it disrupts the peace and serenity of the roof. We couldn't find many rooftop bars so I am sure we will go back another time for the full experience. read more

So wander down after brunch at a different location for a few late afternoon cocktails with some visiting friends. MER promotion people meets us in the lobby and says there is a $10 per person cover charge. That is quickly cut in half when we suggest going elsewhere. When asked who MER is a gentleman claims that is his name. Whatever...but seems super shady. Roll with it because of the walk and reviews. Come upstairs and the bartender is a solid D-. 12 patrons 7 staff and 15 mins for 3 vodka tonics. View is weak! Service worse. Don't waste your time. So many better locations in town. read more

Such a great atmosphere, beautiful view with a nice fountain providing soothing running water sounds to lull you into a feeling of pure contentment. During the twilight hour, it really is magnificent. Over the summer, they hosted weekly art soiree events where there would be live art in progress to the accompaniment of a dj. I hope they never stop doing it because I came back 4 times and was never disappointed. Even the one time a torrential rainstorm came out of nowhere. They did a great job jumping into action and covering the roof with a secure tarp and keeping the party going. As you might expect from a roof, the menu is limited. They offer a few small bites, a very small list of cocktails, and an equally small list of beers. Given the atmosphere and uniqueness of the events, I can live with limited options. read more

I ordered a beer listed as $7 on July 5, 2019. I was charged 83 cents tax plus a $1.26 gratuity, a total of $9.09. When I called the Manager Tony the next day he explained to me that the the 83 cents included a tax on the gratuity (which was according to him obligatory because it was a private event). However, I have checked and this practice of taxing a gratuity is NOT legal when the gratuity is clearly defined as such. The Beacon is therefore in violation of DC tax law. Tony refused to answer my subsequent email advising him of this violation. I am not at all surprised that after checking I saw that the Beacon hotel has a D- rating (repeat D-) from the Better Business Bureau for failing to respond to 5 other complaints. Warning: Do not order a drink at the Beacon before checking the total price. read more

This is a cute little rooftop bar located inside of the Beacon Hotel. They do have some good guac and chips, along with a tasty quesadilla. However, there rooftop menu is very limited and there are not any chairs at the actual bar. They only have a few high tops and some couches---which is great if you have a larger crowd with you. read more

This spot seems surprisingly totally under the radar. I kinda like it! You didn't hear about this place from me [press memory eraser button here!] I'd like to keep it that way! Just kidding, or I would totally be selfish and not Yelp about it.. Occasion: Swung by for a friend's birthday. Ambiance/Atmosphere: Located inside the Beacon Hotel, this rooftop bar labeled as the Sky Bar, has got GREAT potential. There is an elevator which takes you up to the PH level where the Sky Bar is located. Like the rest of the hotel, it elegantly screams, yet whispers with class -- chic boutique. I really love the layout -- the inside is lined with intimate-like table areas with comfy lounge seating sectioned off by small rooms. The outside offers plenty of seating and lounge areas with a rectangular-shaped fountain that allows for some seating/leaning as well. Lounge/House music is lightly played in the background -- just enough that it doesn't drown out conversation or has you screaming in someone's ears. Did I also mention that it is MUCH bigger than the pretentious, overrated rooftop area at the Donoval Hotel? Yes, my friends. Bigger rooftop space, friendlier management and service, and offers much easier access to the rooftop. Bar: Drinks were about $10/each -- typical DC price. I ordered a passion fruit martini, which unfortunately, didn't have the slightest drop of vodka, and only juice and sour mix in it. So naturally, after a long week on a Friday night, I went for what never fails -- patron and pineapple. =) Staff seemed minimal, but then again, it was a bit of a floating mini-bar on wheels. They were accommodating though. Upside: Very laidback. Offered the same classy ambiance without the pretentiousness that you would typically experience at the Donovan Hotel. Upon entering, a hotel employee will direct you straight to the elevator to the rooftop on the PH level, not the fake red carpet line you experience at the Donovan complete with ID check and bracelet, and the labeling factor of if you're "hot or not," and best of all no hassle or waiting in line. Downside: Rooftop area is only open 'til 11pm to prevent noise for hotel guests. Doesn't offer a spectacular view of the city, but the space itself does the job. Tips: Really enjoyable place to hold a happy hour or small gathering for a group of friends and knock back a drink or two. read more

Only because in the heat of summer, it's nice to have some breeze running through your hair as you sit back and watch lines upon lines of scantily clad Russian women eyefuck the shit out of some poor bloke who's desperately trying to get laid. Am I allowed to swear on Yelp? Because I feel like I just used up my quota for the whole year on that last sentence. I came here with two good friends of mine, and we were all pretty nicely dressed, but WHOA I didn't expect what came next...this place is not my scene. The amount of silicone prancing around could have filled the little fountain pool they had in there. Anyways--listen, maybe it was just the night. There WAS some weird DJ-ing going on that night. I was fooled into thinking this would be a sky bar. Like a rooftop or something similarly sexy. In fact, its just an average hotel bar with less than average service. Drew, our server, was nice but seriously spacey. Our wine was only served after repeated asking, my friends diet coke came at the end of the meal... though we ordered at the beginning, the hummus was something out of a costco tub for sure, my salad, though generous, was topped with some kind of mayonnaise situation and we had to beg for silverware. Sure, I like eating lettuce with my hands as much as the next guy but it was a little ridiculous on a crowded DC sidewalk. For some reason I'd always thought this place had a pool - my mistake. It's still super cramped because it's pretty small. The view is decent, though nothing breathtaking. They don't offer happy hour on the roof, and yet don't specify that clearly. I had the wisdom to ask beforehand, but one friend had to find out the hard way - when the check came. The shape of the sky bar resembles an L with a sharp corner forming an angle. When I go to a roof bar I would like to have an expansive and encompassing vista, not a claustrophobic nook. The $5 summer martinis are pretty watered down (and you may only get them downstairs to begin with, anyway). The thing that I do hate though, is they advertise happy hour specials on the banner outside along with the sky bar, while you can't have these two at the same time. read more

We had a work party here and I really had a good time. The views are pretty awesome but I agree with some of the reviews that this is not a true rooftop bar. in More precisely, this is a rooftop patio where you can get a drink but it is otherwise lacking in that it does not have a true bar and does not much have much atmosphere. But I was in the presence of over 100 drunken co-workers so we pretty much made our atmosphere. The bathroom situation is pretty limited as well because there was almost always a wait. So if you're expecting a happening nightspot you'll be disappointed. But if you want to place to have drink and watch the sunset over the D.C. skyline, you'll probably be fine. read more

I was excited to try out the bar I had walked by on my way to and from school for a year now and finally had the chance last Thursday! A few things: - Happy Hour specials listed for the hotel bar do NOT translate to the roof - They will charge you a $10 cover at 5pm for "live music" which didn't happen until 9 *If you're going to charge a cover for band that's on at least have good specials! The Beacon Hotel Sky Bar is a sexy, sleek, hidden DC treasure. I celebrated my birthday here and the manager Kamran was a dream to work with. We worked out a selection of drinks and appetizers that my 30+ guests could choose from. My party had a personal waiter (Chad, he is a comedian go see his show at the Sky Bar on August 7, 2012) and hostess (Nancy who answered all of our questions the day of the event). This was a perfect location to celebrate in a city I absolutely love. Despite my anxieties of turning 25, my glamorous birthday was made even more glamorous at the Beacon Hotel Sky Bar. read more

We came here after STK to watch the sunset on the rooftop; what a great view! Cocktails are served in small plastic cups with small pours and around $13-15. But that's not why you come here so you should probably just stick to house wine and domestic beers. The sunset views are incredible and really make the moment. There's a fun little fountain as well which just adds to the beauty. We saw people dressed casually and people dressed up for a night on the town. If this were a breakup conversation I'd pull a "It's not you-it's me," then walk away thinking, "it's totally all you!" Too harsh? Let's analyze this one night stand a bit further. You're wandering around Dupont looking to try something new. It's the summer, so why not head up to the roof? Pass through Beacon Bar and Grill and take the elevator to the top (Penthouse Please!). You've arrived! Welcome to a bad Miami lounge ASOTV (As Seen On TV) circa 2004. It's not that BSB is really that terrible--the first drink is on the house (or at least was the Tuesday night I was there) there's ample lounge space complete with a (tiny) modern "pool," a DJ playing a mix of decent club and Latin jams, and (the real reason to go to BSB) an amazing view of DC! Added bonus for smokers--which I am not--who despite being increasingly marginalized will be happy to know smoking is allowed so smoke your little heart out! That said, the place feels outdated, passe, like it's just too little too late. The crowd (which was pretty minimal when I was there, but it was a Tuesday) appears to be your standard DC late 20's early 30's wonky sort of blokes--many still in their workday costumes (suits of black, blue, and gray). Will I be back? With so many rooftop bars in DC, probably not. Then again, if you just want a chill spot to throw back a drink and admire the DC skyscape, BSB just might be the place. read more

The scenery is beautiful especially at sunset. Limited menu options however the quesadillas were very good. I ordered a Margarita it was pretty strong but great. Our waiter's service could have been faster and more accurate he accidentally added a $6.99 fee to our tab. Overall this is a nice laid back place for drinks. The new addition of the sky bar at the beacon hotel was a superb idea. Great atmosphere and amazing views. They offer lounge chairs as well as tables to order drinks or appetizers. Perfect place to take a date or meet up with friends. Drinks are pricey but overall the view and the fact that its out on the roof top makes it more enjoyable. read more

The service was horrible. The server kept disappearing. We even had to ask the server to clear the plates. The service was so horrible we had go get our own drinks from the bar. The manager was just as unhelpful as the server. He was more interested in texting and being on his phone than making sure our experience was better. Stay far away. I stopped by Beacon Sky Bar with some friends for happy hour recently. It was a nice day so we wanted to check out a rooftop bar. There's only one elevator to go up to the sky bar, which is just right past the bar when you walk into Beacon Bar & Grill. We went on a Wednesday night and there were two private events going on, but only a part of it was sectioned off. It's not a spectacular view or anything, but it's a nice rooftop bar with enough seating and plenty of space to stand/mingle. Happy hour is 4-7 pm M-Sat. and they have food & drink specials ($1 off draft beers, etc.). Overall, a great place for happy hour when the weather's nice out, especially if you need some happy hour specials to get you through the week! read more

Bad food, surly and inattentive bartenders, and expensive drinks I will agree with other reviewers; it is a pleasant rooftop venue with nice views, but... There are only six items on the bar food menu and they just aren't good, at all! Have you ever heard of quesadillas being served from the kitchen with mustard on them? And this was a kitchen staffed with Latino cooks. Go figure. The bar has a huge variety of drink options, if you don't mind paying $12 to $14 each, and the bartenders make sure that each glass is filled to the brim with ice to minimize the amount of beverage served. Our bartender was surly and inattentive and was completely overwhelmed by the busy bar and patrons. She forgot to enter our food order until we complained about not receiving the food a half hour later! No apologies, no comps, just many excuses blaming everything and everyone but herself. read more

I was leaving a beautiful art soirée event on the roof top tonight when the elevator to go down got stuck and then dropped and caught 3 times before shooting back up to the top. When we finally got out- the staff member said he didn't hear the alarm and said we couldn't use the emergency stairs until his boss yelled at him to get an engineer to unlock the stairs. Another set of people got in then they came out after the same thing happened to them. The elevator continued to make strange noises like it was catching. The staff member then took us down a floor in the stairs to another set of elevators. When I asked where the stairs were that we could continue down, he casually pointed at another door then left. I've never been treated so poorly and shocked at the reaction of the staff. Also, the fact that we couldn't use the emergency stairs seemed extremely unsafe. I won't be going back. read more

This is a nice brunch spot, however the way they treat custimers is ridiculous. Apon my arrival i was greeted by an older man, I gave him my name and he says he didn't know or see my name, I told him I made a reservation, and that I even called to let them know I was running 10 min late, and the person on the phone who sounded just like the man who greeted me said Nope dont see it. Then was like follow me let me get u a table because Someobe screwed up. I just kept quiet and followed him. Now this was for my friends 25th Birthday, I reserved the tanle for 6 people and it ended up being 5 instead. Apparently thats an issue for this place, they told me I shouldn't havw booked for 6 people and if I wasnt sure how many peoplw was coming I should've waited. I was shocked and annoyed, the icing on the cake was my friend found a hair in her food, and when she told the waitress she said "its just a lil hair" but we will just comp your brunch. No Im sorry nothing. Then she had an attitude anout it. Besides that issue the food was good, Price is decent for a buffet style beunch only $40.
