I'm amazed why this place got such extreme reviews. Honestly I was a bit worried after reading all the reviews here on Yelp - almost considering to stay somewhere else. However, my husband convinced me to just go and see how it's like since we are only staying a day. We booked our room at 1087 beacon inn since we wanted to be closer to the city. When we arrived, we were greeted with a lovely gentleman. Although our room was not available when we arrived (we got in around 1:30pm). He graciously offered to store the luggage and send to our room when it's ready. We got the symphony room which is on the top floor and faced the main road. It does get a bit noisy with the T but we are in the city! That can't be avoided with the inn right off a main road. The room was spacious and clean. The bathroom can use an upgrade but it wasn't falling apart. There's free wifi. Like other reviewers had said, the breakfast is very basic - bagels, cereals, fruits, muffins, coffee and toast. But you can't beat the price and convenience - the T stops a few feet in front of the house and there are coffeeshops and cafes around the area. I'd definitely considered coming back here. read more

Terrible experience and no follow up. Super disappointing. Room was freezing cold. Person at desk said he couldn't change temperature AND that they could not provide extra blankets. We had to check out. We asked for full refund and "Brad" at the desk said we would get full refund. Since then, Brad said we can only get 50% refund. Then spoke to Vanessa who said there was a way to change the temp and they had extra blankets and the person who was there at the time was new and didn't know. She would check on this and nothing has happened. A third call was with Sarah who said to call back at the desk and repeat the whole situation again. I called tonight before closing time for the 4th time and no answer. Very disappointed as we were excited to find a small hotel near our place that we wanted to use for business colleagues and for friends who wanted to stay nearby. This is the worst hotel experience I have ever had. The room was dirty and the wallpaper was peeling off the walls. It looked like it had not been cleaned from the person staying in the room previously. The overhead light popped and lost a bulb when I turned it on. It was dusty, decrepit, and I think there were bed bugs in my bed. I had to wash all of my clothes immediately when I got home. Beacon Inn also seems to be run by teenagers who answer you with one syllable responses and clearly do not give a shit about what they're doing. It is barely one step above a roach motel. read more

This continues our story from the last. So. We did prevail on manager of the 1st Beacon Inn to call a cab and got to the other "Beacon Inn", this one located ten minutes further west from the first. We were upset and asked for the taxi fare. Nothing doing. We told them we had not been told about a second Beacon Inn. Smiles from the young man who instead provided us with myriad forms to sign. I could not read them all. We were shown our room, a tiny thing on the 4th floor reached by a narrow, winding stair a small dog would have trouble navigating. It did have a shower, sink and john, but the pocket door to them would not begin to close. the A/C shot a blast across the very soft mattress at two speeds: on and off. There were no cups or tissues. Low ceiling and a permanently open window with no screen are the last negative things I can remember but my female companion has more. All in all a disagreeable, almost intimidating experience. read more

Great location, and that is a huge plus, but very very disappointed. I really thought this would be a really great alternative to the hotel. I was wrong. So first impressions is this, it is old. I know they have tried to improve it, but the dorrs stick when trying to get in to just check in. Since we didn't get in til after 9, they leave an envelope in the mailbox with directions on how to check in. So you fill out paperwork before heading to your room, and very specifically, they say, IF you don't do X then at 8 am we will knock on your door and have you sign away. We were on the 3rd floor and dragged our luggage all the way up. Upon entering the room, I was pleasantly surprised. It was modernized, except for the box a/c unit, which everyone has, since no one has central air. No big deal. BUT..... upon sitting on the bed, things just were not up to par. First off what is up with the bedding? I swear it had to be 20 yrs old. They supposedly hold a comforter inside the duvet, but only after fluffing the crap out of it, did I realize it was basically shoved at the bottom. The pillows!! good lord, they are just soft bricks! Could it kill the establishment to invest in good quality pillows and bedding? The bed itself was awful. I swear if I had my husband with me, there is no way you could have any romance on it, because the whole building would have known what was going on. I rocked and squeaked awful and just so uncomfortable. My daughter knew every time I rolled over on the bed! On a plus note.. It has a great TV, a nice desk, (bring a very long cord to charge your phone) a chair and plenty of places for clothing. On to the bathroom: It was clean, but the walls could use some wiping down and it is tiny... my husband is 6'4, and I am pretty sure his knees would have hit the sink if he had sat on the toilet. I can't remember the last time a toilet and sink were so close to the ground. The shower was fine, no tub. but that's fine. The breakfast: continental which was good with fresh croissants. All the things you need except a place to sit! I have never stayed at one where there wasn't a dining room to eat. Instead it looks like they made bedrooms instead. Crazy! I also got a call the next day saying I need to come back and sign for the charge for the rest of my stay! I called them back and said you have my card on file, and they said they wouldn't run it until I sign the form!? I said, I am out and not coming back til late, so not sure what you want to do. So they shoved it under my door. That was so weird. I've stayed in a lot of B&B's. I know what to expect and what not to expect. I know most are old and I can live with the charm of them being old. What I can't deal with is crappy bedding, pillows and bed. I have no idea what the other rooms were like. I was fine with the bathroom, except I can't stay there with my husband, but no problem with my kids. Great location is a huge plus. The rates, well, for what I paid vs a hotel, there wasn't that much of a difference. I wish it would have been better. read more

Just cancelled a reservation *6 weeks* in advance and am being charged $25!! Wow. I don't think i was informed about this prior to making my reservation, but in any case, such a policy seems ridiculous! They did say you're charged if you cancel less than *14 days* ahead, which i understand, but 6 weeks ahead? Basically, they charge you $25 to run your credit card? (they take a deposit for the first night). I have no doubt that they will rent the room and if they don't, it won't be because they don't have enough time - Boston is in high demand in the fall! Stayed here for one night. The inn itself is lovely and I was blown away by the service. I left my cellphone in an Uber and Mora at the front desk did everything she could to make sure I got my phone back that night. She helped me track the phone from my iPad, notify Uber that my phone was missing, and programmed a message on the phone with instructions on how to return it to her. She was professional. kind and extremely helpful, I can't say enough. I WILL BE BACK! read more

My adventure at the Beacon Inn started when I was allowed to use someone's room to use the facilities (red flag). My room was on the 4th floor, no elevator by the way, and only the very sweet front desk girl offered to help me. After 3 flights of regular stairs I came upon what I can only presume were used at one time as the servant's stairs (narrower and steeper and tighter). My room was what I, again presuming here, where the servants bedded down. Or maybe it was once used as the attic. So glad it wasn't summertime as it would have been like an oven in there. The room itself was ok. It came with what you'd find in a typical hotel room. The bathroom was small but was fine for my needs--except for the hair I found in the shower ( I have lots of my own thank you). The sheets on the bed must have been made of burlap and were too small. The next morning was breakfast that comes with the room. Small boxes of cereal, packets of instant oatmeal, baked goods, a toaster to use and a Kuerig for coffee (if it ran out of water I don't know where you were suppose to fill it up). There was a mini fridge were the gallon of milk was kept (for everyone to use), communal bottles of different juices, yogurts, butter pats...apples, bananas. And NO place to sit. I guess I was suppose to take my breakfast back to my room. Lucky for me, my friend was on the first floor. We did have to borrow another chair, from the front desk, so I could sit in her room. We used an old trunk as a table. When we got ready to leave for the day we were told that the extra key with our room key was for the front door. They lock up at 9pm and I guess no one would be able to let us in. My friend's room was bigger than mine. Her bathroom was nondescript. The big find in her room was when she took the decorative pillows off the bed her head was in the fireplace. Plus she heard everyone walking overhead all night. The locks on our room doors were scary. My friend had the locks one might find on your bathroom door. My lock was a "bolt" that if you didn't close it just right let your door open (I found this out when I came back after a long day). Coming and going, no one at the front desk said Good Morning, Good Evening, How was you day, Did you sleep well, Hi...nothing. I found nail clippings on the floor in my room. The sad thing is this place could be a real gem. If the owners would invest some money to upgrade the rooms a bit, use one of the downstairs rooms as a sitting room and really work on the breakfasts this place would be awesome. It's located in a great neighborhood. It's very close to mass transit. And the restaurant choices are plentiful. But right now I have to give it 1 star. read more

Honestly, what was I to expect for $134 a night (or $154 for 3 guests per room) in a city like Boston? Pros: -Super convenient location. The hotel is just across the street from a Green Line T-stop. It took about 25 minutes to get to Copley Square, so it had easy access to the Back Bay area. Also a short T-ride (or nice walk) to stores (e.g. Trader Joe's), cafes (Breugger's Bagels), and bars at Coolidge Corner, Washington Square, etc. Within a block of American Craft, a good place for the last beer of the night. -Cheap. However, do consider that they charge an extra $21 a night for a 3rd guest (even for a room with two double beds? I still don't quite get that). They also charge $20 a night for behind-the-building parking with limited access. You probably will pay extra for parking in a lot of places, but at this location you could potentially get blocked in by their double parking set up. -Friendly staff. Cons: -It wasn't always easy to find the friendly staff, as there is usually just 1 desk person there doing multiple things. Also, for some reason, the phone number on their website (and 411 listing) did not give you phone access to the 1750 location. I accidentally left a pair of earrings in the hotel room and had no success getting a person at 1750 on the phone via the 1087 location to inquire whether they had been turned in. There is also no desk staff there between 9PM and 8:30AM (though guests get a key to the front door, which is locked late at night). This made me a little fearful of what would happen in the case of an emergency. -The Constitution room where I stayed was ok. Beds were very comfy, but bedding was quite worn. The room was spacious and clean, but dark (and the only lamp to provide extra lighting was plugged into a dangerously faulty outlet). I stayed there during the week, so it was nice and quite. But it could potentially be very loud depending on who was next door. It's an old building, after all, and it's right on the street too. But, like I said, what do you expect for great access to the city for so cheap? I guess I'd stay there again if I was in a pinch. read more

Great location - close to public transit and an easy walk to a few bars, restaurants, and bakeries. This is an old house with creaky floors and thin walls, but you stay here for that old boston feeling. It could use a freshing up. They could charge double their current rates if they just redid the bathrooms and wallpaper. Parking is in the back for $25. We couldn't get the tv to work well. I gave this B&B (It's not a chain hotel) 5 stars for it's historical charm, location and city price. This is a wonderful place if you know up front what it is. A 100 year old building right on the T line. I can't believe a reviewer actually complained about the creaking floors! That is part of the charm. While you do get to stay in a historical brownstone, this is a business located in a very expensive city. Try to stay in NYC, Chicago, Washington DC or anywhere in Boston for less. Staying at the Beacon Inn you get to experience what it would be like to live in the city. That is parking is a pain, subway is you primary transportation, and if you are hungry, go to a restaurant. Complaining about the continental breakfast? Did you not notice this wasn't a restaurant? There must be 100 places to get something to eat within a 5 min walk! If you want to stay in a concrete office building, stay at the Marriott and pay 3X more, but don't say you experienced Boston, because unless you stayed here, you won't. read more

I'd encourage anyone to stay at the Best Western a few blocks away. I didn't even get to stay at the hotel - the doors were locked upon my arrival. This review has more to do with management and customer service policies. Our room was booked through a third-party site (expedia, book.com, etc). Fortunately for the Beacon Inn they do not post on these sites that the doors are locked and there is no staff present after 9. They also fail to inform you that there is a minimum two week cancellation policy. So when you arrive at the hotel and can't get into the place they still charge you for the room. Excellent way to flat out rob people who need a room late at night. I called them that night and left a message that we were stuck outside and leaving if no one was letting us in, literally two hours after booking the room. The next day they called back and said we were still being charged for the room, the room we couldn't stay in. This is a throw back to late 90's-early 00's customer service. They need to get with the times here. They seem to think that their practices are perfectly fine too which is the kicker. I've had better customer service experiences with Bank of America, Verizon, and countless other corporations known for their lack in that regard. It seems that the manager understands that Boston is a hotspot and people will pay for rooms despite bad service, but damn, someone needs to hit this person with a phonebook or something. read more

We just spent three nights at the Beacon Inn. The people at the front desk were friendly and very helpful. Our room was very comfortable with all the necessary amenities. Great location, extremely convenient to downtown with the T just steps away. Great restaurants also just steps away. read more

DISAPPOINTED: To put it nicely as i would like to blast this place. Had high hopes coming into this place. It was a last minute booking on our part for the Boston Marathon. We love Boston and the history and just assumed a place like Beacon Inn which has rooms named after famous people and historic valued places in Boston that it would carry with it some high expectations and quality service. First note: the room we were given Boston Commons very small 9ft by 20ft PROS: its right next to the Green Line. The only Pro which is also a con since its loud right outside your window. Cons: The light Continental breakfast that you get is : Pick a cereal box, some nutella or coffee because that is all that is offered. The bathroom tiles were coming up and i kept kicking one out of its place when walked in the bathroom. The bottom of the door to the room had a huge enough cap that if a person wanted to they could look into our room from the floor. The wall paper was old and discolored in the room and bathroom. There was only two lamps in the room and when it got dark outside the room was poorly lit. We requested a lamp and was told that they would have to search the storage and see what they could find. they came up and brought us a small lamp that was super glued back together and was super dusty.(they couldn't have wiped it off before giving it to us) The room had no AC and when we went to open the one window, it had a piece of paper taped on it that read " Caution Please do not operate window. it is temporally out of order." Hm mm really a window out of order, why? My husband called and asked if we could get the window fixed or moved to another room since it was warm. the answer was NO( as they weren't moving us and the request to fix the window was a square piece of wood to hold the window open. which was a pencil case holder.. Awesome we say Ghetto rigged. The wood floors are obviously a nice touch to make the place look authentic but were so loud and squeaked. You could also hear every move every person staying in the place made and what type of shoes they were wearing. oh yeah, the room had no refrigerator, not iron or iron board i had to call and ask for one and was told that i would have to wait while she searched. strange i thought since most places its standard to have that in a room for guest. I would not suggest this place at all if your trying to enjoy a peaceful night of sleep or a friendly staff. We walked in and out of the Inn a few times and never once was greeted with a hello or asked if we needed anything. The front desk persons were either college students or a person who English was not there first language. Notice when you pay for the room before actually seeing it, the first few lines of the agreement state you will not get a refund not matter what the circumstance. Very Sad. we had a very ugly taste in our mouth on the called Bed and Breakfast of which were good. We made reservations at nearby Marriott to ensure we got quality quiet sleep and a place with the amenities of normal hotels and bed and breakfast. The price was ridiculous for what was given. I would say YELP or search reviews first. read more

Perfect location, we walked to Fenway from the Inn and had an awesome lunch at a place called Tatte. The subway stops right outside so on our next trip in, probably for a Celtics game this fall we're going to take the t right to the garden. Staff was friendly and helpful - couldn't ask for much more for the price which was lower than all the other hotels we found. read more

My son and I made a resent stay due to BU move in. We had to come into Boston early. The inn was very accommodating to hold all of my sons luggage on the first floor, as well as have our room ready before check in time so we could rest. Inn was clean and quite. Had a very comfortable stay at the Beacon Inn on a recent trip to the Boston area. Maura Pine went above and beyond to help me retrieve my iPhone that I had left in the Uber car that took me to the Beacon Inn. She spent more than an hour with me accessing an app that allowed me to alert my Uber driver, who eventually returned my phone. I am so grateful for her patience and perseverance. read more

Mediocre on every possible level. Concierge was either on phone, on computer, eating, or absent. Asked for a fan for my room three times. No fan. No drinking glasses in room. An empty toilet paper roll greeted me in the bathroom. A bed that creaked every time you moved. No telephone in room. "Breakfast" in a corner of the lobby: no chairs. The only virtue I can honestly say is that it was relatively inexpensive. read more

My husband and I stayed here the night before I was to have surgery at a Boston hospital. We were given the first floor room facing the sidewalk. I second all the reviewers who have noted the tiny bathrooms, tired furnishings, unpredictable heating system, and miserable breakfast offerings. In addition, we awoke to jackhammers breaking up brick and cement on the front walk beneath our windows. No mention was made of possible construction when we booked our room. Nor was any reduction in our rate forthcoming. We vacated the room as soon as possible even though my surgery was hours later. Although the location is good, there is no old world charm here. And there are much better deals to be had in Boston. read more

Caution if your from way out of town. Paid $111 deposit for room. Another 2014 blizzard hit shutting down the city and most flights to Boston. I canceled room, and the manager thought he was being magnanimous by telling me if I stayed at the hotel within 30 days, I wouldn't lose my deposit. read more

If you're looking for reviews of this place because you saw an ad for a job here on Craigslist, I'll give you a hint: don't waste your time. The job turnover at this place is unlike anywhere I've ever been, and it's for good reason. The management knows you're expendable and treats you as such. Have you ever been told that "there are no stupid questions"? Not so here. Every question is a completely idiotic question, and if you had to ask it, you obviously didn't think it through for long enough. As for the experience of staying here, I haven't, but here's what I know: you really do get what you pay for -- it's cheap, which is great, but don't expect a luxury stay. The breakfast is fairly lame pastries that come out of the freezer. A lot of the rooms are really cute and quaint but other ones need serious help, new linens, furniture, etc. A lot of the reviews I've seen for this place on other sites have said that the staff is as helpful as they can be, but they have almost no power to do anything if a guest has a complaint -- they can't refund your money, they can't give you the phone number of someone real to complain to, and they can't find you anything like a blanket or a hairdryer that isn't easily found in the basement or an empty room. I'm the type of person who wants to do anything I can to fix a problem. I usually had absolutely no power to do anything except listen to people's complaints and offer a lame "I'm sorry", which was rarely believed. And for good reason. My first day out of training at this job was the worst first day of any job I've ever had in my life. I almost walked out, but I stuck it out for a few months. I obviously didn't work there long, but it was long enough to see that they have no regard for excellent (or even decent) customer service, and don't seem to want to remedy that. Ever. For the record, I quit in favor of seasonal employment -- a job I knew I'd be laid off from in January. And I don't really care, because I am so much happier to be out of there. read more

My experience here was leaving clothes in a closet in our room. I realized I had left them an hour or so after we left heading back west. When I called they said someone was already occupying the room. They said they would check with him when he returned and they would also check with the housekeeper who had the next day off. I called them frequently. In the end, I was told the housekeeper saw nothing and the new guest knew nothing either. I was very disappointed and angered. I also will not return. If you should decide to do so, don't be as careless as I was. By the way, the staff was not helpful. read more

My husbands parents recently booked a two night stay at the Beacon Street Inn. I recommended it (I walk by it daily and it looks so charming). They arrived and received room 14. When I walked in to greet them, I was astounded. It looked like a motel 6...literally. The bed was a squeaky full with an old, dingy quilt. The floors looked like something out of a 60's horror film, and last but not least...there was blood on the wall across from the toilet. I suggested they ask for their money back and book a hotel down the street. However, because of the paperwork, they were unable to get a refund. The parking was horrible: most of the cars are parked in. When my in-laws needed cars moved so they could get out, no one was at the front desk to move them. They ended up moving the cars themselves as the keys were sitting right on the desk. The breakfast was cereal. You are better off booking with the Holiday Inn or Courtyard Marriott down the street. read more

Thought this would be a nice, homey place to stay for one night. First, the room key left for us was for an occupied room. Nobody was on the premises to help us but they told us someone would come right away...but nobody did (and we were now in a rush). We left our bags in an unlocked room - the one they told us was actually correct. We were confused as our room door was a big fire door with a strange lock (which they said was due to fire codes). We did not notice until we returned at night (no one on the premises) and saw there was a huge red EXIT sign glowing inside the room! The room was too hot and noisy - radiator (?charming?) which could not be turned down. There were no water glasses, not even a box of tissues. The sheets were scratchy. It was a sleepless night. Breakfast looked to be stale pastries, cereal in boxes, and coffee. How did it get the misnomer 'Bed and BREAKFAST'??? we will never go there again, despite the convenience of the location. read more
