OK; could be so much better…read more Maybe it's because Guitar Center is a chain, and there's a tendency for all GC's to be kind of the same, but this is a store with a lot of potential which it unfortunately doesn't always live up to. I've been a guitar player for well over 30 years, and have a houseful of instruments, which consequently need strings, maintenance, and other supports. After a number of disappointments, I find GC has become the place I visit only in an emergency, when all other possibilities are unavailable. Strings are a case in point. I use very specific custom sets on most of my instruments, that I assemble from singles of the appropriate style and gauges. Turns out that GC's selection of single strings is, well, pathetic. On any given day I've got a wider variety in the string drawer in my living room than you're likely to find at GC. If you're OK with preselected sets, they have a fair range to choose from. But if you need anything custom and live in Eugene, you're going to have to shop on-line. There's a good range of electric guitars at various price points. Acoustic instrument variety has, however, greatly decreased over the past several years. Most of the acoustics fall in the low end -- $100-$250 -- then there's a jump to $3000 Taylors. Good solid mid-range instruments are almost entirely lacking. Also, very few classical guitars to be seen, and most of those low end. Twelve strings are rare. All in all, my current impression of GC acoustic room is "generic". They have their pluses: service is usually friendly -- although it's varied all the way from "hard-to-locate", to "intrusive" at times. They do occasionally have good deals on used, refurbed amps, and it's the only place in town to buy decent audio cables. A fairly limited selection of effects, parts, and books rounds out what has essentially become the "McDonald's" of guitar shops: reliable, generic, middle-of-the road. It's a pity, because they have the space and the staff knowledge to be so much more. Of course, maybe that's the way corporate central wants it. Oh well.

Upon its delivery I discovered several issues with the guitar, fret buzzing, g-string buzzes when plucked, Floyd Rose bridge uneven, And it wouldn't stay tuned really. I brought this to their attention and they were really cool about comping me for the $150 "platinum setup". The setup is advertised to leave one's guitar playing in flawless condition. When I turn the guitar over to their guitar tech him and I went over the guitar together recognizing the issues I just mentioned. A week later I get a call from the text saying the guitar is playing fabulously and it was ready for pickup. I was at work so I had my partner pick it up. The condition that the guitar was in blew my mind, I couldn't even tell what had been done to the guitar other than the new strings they put on, there was just as much if not more fret buzzing all up and down the neck, The Floyd Rose bridge wasnt just uneven, it was set at a steep incline. Also the whammy bar housing was loose. Turns out that's what was making the G string buzz. Which I fixed, along with every other issue. Also was tuned to open C. When I specifically told him drop B. The fact the tech guy told me on the phone "the guitar is shredding now bro", is laughable. What unprofessional results.

Wow, this is service at it's best. So the first time I experienced Windsmith Music my daughter and…read moreI were shopping for a violin for her. We came to try a few of the violins they had. They were great about explaining the different choices they had and talking about some of the different sounds each violin might produce. My daughter tried the four that were in our price range and didn't really experience anything remarkable. So ultimately we ended up playing a German Violin that had the sound she was looking for. Something about being made from wood from the Carpathian Forests, seemed to make a difference :) But I wouldn't hesitate to buy a violin from them. And personally, I'd love to do that b/c their service is so great (more about that next). So recently, we had a problem with our silent (electric) violin. One of the strings was starting to come apart a bit so we decided to get new strings thinking that would fix the problem. We brought the violin back and found out the problem was still there. So we called, and they said to bring the violin back and they'd take a look. We dropped it off and then about a day later they figured out it had to do with a finger guide we had wrapped around the neck which was coming up just enough to cause a problem w/ a couple of the strings. What impressed me though was how kind and helpful they were throughout the whole process. Cassie was the one helping us and she was AMAZING! So basically, the problem was all on us. We are the ones who caused this issue (not them). Yet they took the time to research the problem to try and figure out what it was, then figured out the issue and got us taken care of. Then on top of that we weren't charged anything. At one point they even offered to drop our violin off in Corvallis (where we live) to save us a trip back into Philomath. PRO TIP: If you're traveling from Corvallis, I recommend calling first depending on what you might need. For example, the person you may want to speak with or work with may not be there when you stop by so it might be wise to call again just to be sure. But they truly go above and beyond, give great service, their pricing is very fair and reasonable. We're fortunately to have such a great music business here in the area and I'm excited for the next time we'll be stopping by!

On June 3, 2020 I took my daughter's play guitar that I purchase on Amazon for 17.99 to the Troubadour. The owner/ front guy is old school customer service where he enjoys getting to know the customers. After a 15 minute chit chat he tells me that all strings would need to replaced. I asked for total co$t and he said it would be $11.50 for the package of strings and $20 installation. When I picked it up the next day he gives me a quote of $56 !!!! "For what?" I asked. "Gas and oil, you know things have gotten expensive. Especially kids stuff." I stared at him and said "I really do not understand the gas & oil part. Sounds outrageous!" He said he would give me a discount from $56 to $49. I paid the $49 and went to get a 2nd & 3rd of opinion on cost. Both other places quoted me $20 and no "gas & oil" cost. I am all about supporting local business, but when you get reaped off by local vendors it makes it hard to support them. Corvallis is not a big place and variety is limited. But extorting locals is not the way to keep your business open.
