The stuffed animal found in the bed...Yuck!

This place is not a great choice at all! We came here Thursday in person to check availability for Friday night she said that there was one room available so we reserved it. We returned Friday at 5:00 Pm and we were told that someone booked our room out from under us on booking.com. Leaving us without lodging due to the owner not putting it in the system fast enough! Hmmmm?? We waited for two hours and miraculously a room became available. The room was yucky and smelled of pets. A stuffed animal was found in a bed

Words cannot describe how disgusting this place was. Checked in for Memorial Day weekend late night. Opened the door to the room 6 and was immediately hit by the overwhelming mold smell. After several minutes of searching I finally located it in the bathroom. When I looked up the whole ceiling was scattered with black mold. I returned to the front desk who was on the phone, she couldn't even be bothered to help, feigned a look of fake surprise to hear there was mold, and simply told us she would refund our money. Barely even an apology made despite the fact that I am an asthmatic and was already struggling pretty good for air after just a few minutes in this room. After we left we found out they re posted the room for rent I have filed a complaint with the department of health but wanted to warn people!

    Love the landscaping!

If you want quiet... to unplug! This is the place. Loved our walks the beach. Short drive to town. Clean. And pet friendly. Very nice. Perfect for me. We didn't come for tv or to plug in to our gadgets. Awesome! Time!

The townhomes were a bit dated, but had everything we needed for a short stay. A couple of things to note, the bedrooms are on the second floor which requires a climb up a spiral staircase. I always love the idea of a cool, spiral staircase to a loft area and really didn't mind so much, however if you have difficulties with mobility or feel a bit uncomfortable with these, I would steer clear (when I was walking down them with my bag to check out I almost had a bit of a slip up). They were also made of a kind of uncomfortable to walk on barefoot stone, so I often needed to put shoes on to walk up and down. A couple more chairs on the back patio would be nice for a little sitting, hang out area for those with a longer stay (there was only one chair). The property is located in a sleepy beach town, so don't expect a ton to be open late either. The place could definitely use some upgrades, but with that being said, all in all, our stay was pleasant, the price was right, the bed was comfortable, and we got what we needed out of it.

We had the Hawaiian Villa, which was cute. It does come with cute decor and almost everything you would need (dishes, cups, utensils, cooking gear, towels, even body wash and shampoo). My only real complaint was a funky, smoky smell that I could not get rid of, I tried febreeze, opening windows, nothing worked. The units are non-smoking, so I don't know if it was from nearby fire pits or what. Also, the bathroom does not have an exhaust fan (again, older building, probably a good 50-60 years old) and it is downstairs. So, if you are vacationing with several other people, leaving the bathroom door open isn't probably an option. But, considering you can hear the ocean from your unit, and are literally walking distance to the beach ( and we scheduled this trip, in July, two weeks prior to going, and usually you have to book a year in advance for Ocean Shores) and the price was VERY reasonable, and their customer service was great to deal with, those few issues were minor. So, for the price and location, yes I recommend. It's not a 5 star resort, but a cozy little retreat for a beach get away.

The place had all the amenities you could need for a little getaway including a: WiFi, decently stocked kitchen, fridge, stove, oven, cable/smart TV, board games, small washer, little private patio, and one parking spot. You can easily move things around the place, I did a ton of yoga in the living room. I loved that I didn't really need to drive anywhere and could just walk everywhere. Check in is super easy and there is a lockbox for you to access your keys. As mentioned in other reviews, the stairs here are super steep and you have to use them to get to the bed. Definitely a hazard if you're not careful and trip. Overall I really enjoyed this little cottage and would recommend it for a couples getaway or a solo retreat!

Getting there was somewhat of a driver's nightmare, however, coming in from Interstate-5 on State Highway 12 (Olympic Highway), since the summer vacation traffic was almost bumper to bumper (given the disjointed route that Highway 12 takes you on, through the several small communities of Aberdeen, Hoqium, and then up Highway 101 to 109 [Ocean Beach Road] to Ocean City and thence to Coplais Beach, etc., etc.). Once at our destination (at Copalis Beach), we managed to find the entrance to the SURSUM CORDA property opening to the right, and pulled in to the moderately large parking area up hill. Over the next several days, we settled into the rooms in the main facility well enough and the stay was overall quite enjoyable. The grounds are simple & unpretentious, but pleasing. Since the entrance is a bit hard to see (especially at night), one must be alert for the small sign on the roadway leading up hill to it. The surroundings are rustic, but pleasant in a low key, naturalistic context, with a large yurt adjacent the main facility for group activities. There are several rustic trails leading from the yurt back into the adjacent woods that are also relaxing, extremely peaceful and bucolic for short walks. The rooms in the main facility(there are two levels, one partly built into the hill) are also simple and unpretentious, but were clean and neat enough, as was the large adjoined kitchen/living room area. This facility originated as a rural county health clinic complex, back in the 70s (I believe), but it was later sold to private owners who remodled it as a vacation visitor retreat. From what I've read, there were several subsequent owners, but the presnt owners (2017) have taken obvious pains to make it a pleasant venue for short stays. I for one was pleased and found the quiet, calm setting, tucked in off Highway 109, to be very relaxing. The yurt was used (by my family) for a great 'Yoga Dance' one evening, which suited everyone perfectly and was actually great fun for four generations to kick up their heels and celebrate getting together! There is no immediate (direct) beach access and one must take the road (109) down to Ocean City (about 12 miles) and Gray's Harbor, but it's a reasonaly brief drive. There are recreational opportunities (such as horses to ride) there in another nearby area and kayaking is also good in the local waters of the harbor. Some general stores on 109 along the way sell food, general goods and sundries, and in Ocean City are several gas stations to avail. Side from the peaceful, woodsy and pleasant locale, the rates are quite modest and it's a perfect venue for just about anything (including large groups of about 40 people, such as was ours). Unless you are accustomed to 'upscale' accommodations, I think most people will find their stay at Sursum Corda quite nice! (Our stay was during the first week of August, 2017). Some people who do the vehicular circumnavigation of the Olympic Peninsula (up West 101 on the west side) to Port Angeles and Sequim, circling Olympic National Park, then down 101 East to Olympia, stay in this area en route and it's perfect as part of such an itinerary (but must be booked in advance). In case you're curious: SURSUM CORDA is a rather unusual name, but it is actually part of the opening Latin dialogues of the ancient Christian church liturgy and translates to "Lift up your hearts!". Given the pastoral serenity that the retreat provides its guests, its name is actually quite well chosen. Enjoy.

The atmosphere had a subtle coziness, but the Airbnb photos made it look much more updated, renovated, and inviting than it actually was. When we arrived, it was clear the chalet was dated. For the price per night, we expected more. Right away we noticed cobwebs on the walls and ceilings, heavy dust throughout, and even dust bunnies under the main bed. The fridge was also incredibly loud--sounding like a jet engine switching on and off all night. Other issues stood out: * Towels were limited, and the ones provided had hair in them. * The bathroom faucet's water pressure sprayed everywhere, forcing us to use our already-limited towels just to clean up. * The blinds couldn't be pulled open because of old, crusted bird droppings on the outside. We understand this is the ocean, but these clearly hadn't been cleaned in a long time. * The mattresses were by far the most uncomfortable I've ever slept on--making it difficult to get any real rest. What made things more frustrating was their very strict check-in and check-out policy, which they explained was due to their cleaning crew's schedule. Normally, that would make sense, but given the lack of cleanliness we experienced, it made their "no exceptions" stance confusing. That being said, I did appreciate a few things. They were upfront in the listing about the steps leading up to the second floor, and they weren't exaggerating--they really are steep, so it was good to know ahead of time. I also appreciated some of the amenities inside the chalet, which made parts of the stay more comfortable. The chalet itself has good bones and could be a great place with better upkeep--thorough cleaning, fresher linens, updated mattresses, and a little extra care inside and out. As it stands, though, it doesn't live up to its price point. I'd be hesitant to recommend this spot without those updates and at this point would suggest checking out other options in Ocean Shores first.

In any way, this is still a great visit imo. My Titas drive up here to let us experience flying kites before summer ends in PNW. We didn't really stroll or checked that heart of its town as we drive directly to their infamous beach where you can drive on the sand. It's like a free way with no specific policy on what direction you gonna drive. Came here around lunch time and here I am having so much fun with family and bandit flying kites. It's been a while since I last time do this activity. It's nice that even when I am an adult I am still able to have time to do this activity. As I aforementioned I have mixed emotion because people just wanna have fun chillin' but not totally defining its definition as a lot of people are zooming around with their truck, bikes and jeep. It's a bit scary but no law doesn't allowed you to drive on the shore. The environmental impact is high and I think they should limit the time to get there driving around. We stayed here two days and the first day was a little overcsast but it's beautiful. Second day it was sunny with a nice breeze and a group set up multiple large kites. I don't know if this is a club or something but sign me up! They had impressive kites, and their skills were pretty cool. Scuba divers, butterflies, hearts, squid and so many more. We also brought along our two dogs and a sign in front says dogs must be on leash. People still let their friendly dogs off leash around their cars and around them when exploring around the water. We did watch an eagle successfully hunting other birds, definitely like a scene out of animal planet and after that we kept our mini poodle close! For the most part walking around everyone respects leash and scooping rules. I will say though people need to do better at cleaning up their trash. There is a lot of trash being buried around the beach and the back grassy hill is used as a bathroom so there's lots of toilet paper making it a landmine of grossness.

The check in woman was very nice and made the process last less than five minutes. The actual beach house was about a five minute drive away in a quiet little neighborhood by the beach. The house itself is beautiful inside! I was a little disappointed there was no garage opener for us to use to drive in the garage, but I guess we could have had someone open it for us to drive in. The driveway was big enough for two cars anyway, so it wasn't really an issue. Dislikes: Only four trash bags for the kitchen trash. We borrowed bags from the bathroom trash when we ran out. The sliding door in the kids' room didn't seem to have a child safety lock, which made me worry they would sneak out and go to the water by themselves. It was pretty heavy though, and they never did sneak out. The TV was supposed to have Netflix, but we could never get it to work (and my husband does tech for a living) There were only two hangars per closet and zero dressers. I had to leave my clothes in my bag, which left everything cluttered. The recliners don't work in the living room. The bedroom patio doors desperately need blackout curtains. The blinds let so much light in that I woke up at 6am...on vacation. The kitchen has a menagerie of pans, but if you're cooking something that needs a specific tool, be safe and bring what you need. Positives: The kitchen is gorgeous! They have kid's plates and cups, a great pantry, and both a Keurig and traditional coffee maker. There were two adult bikes (one girl, one boy) in the garage, as well as some sand toys and kites, and a charcoal and gas grill. The views are beautiful. I could have spent the while weekend sitting on the balcony in the adirondak chair watching the waves and the boats. The deer in Ocean Shores are like squirrels everywhere else; driving to town we saw probably ten, and one morning I watched a doe with her fawn casually walk down the trail right to our patio. There is a hose outside the downstairs queen bedroom for hosing off sand. In total, I loved our time at Beach Gem. I would definitely return.
