I came to see St Kilda pier on a cold and windy day and stopped by here to grab a bite as well as to take shelter from the strong winds on the beach. We got a table overlooking the pier. I got the vegan burger which was nice and quite large. They also had $30 lunch specials that comes with soup, entree and wine. The food was decent and the staff was very friendly. Great place to enjoy a coffee or a meal with an awesome view of the pier. read more

Located at the St Kilda Sea Baths, do not be fooled by the great location. This establishment should be avoided at all costs. Why you might ask? You would be better off emotionally and financially to head up to nearby Acland Street once your beach entourage in St Kilda is over. Forget about it and move on. The staff just aren't welcoming at all. They might be experienced hospitality professionals; it is too hard to tell; or they could be cheap labour; I honestly do not know. It is easy to get the vibe that your mere presence is an interruption and a disturbance in itself. The banana smoothie wasn't the best, and you end up waiting a heck of a long time for service. If you are in a hurry do not come to this establishment. In fact its beach come go, not beach come in. The waiters are depressed, they probably hate their jobs. Maybe, just maybe if the owner invested in some high class hospitality training for them that things might change for the better in tandem with a more care for the customer attitude. I can only review the gelato because that's all I've ever had here. They have three vegan gelato options: mango, berry, and lemon sorbet. I got the mango and it was very good. Creamy and tasty. Service was super-friendly and of course the view here is amazing. (Honestly, the view is the real drawcard of this place. The decor and food menu for the restaurant didn't seem all that spectacular. People come here for the location and the view.) Side note -- I've also ducked in here plenty of times to use their toilet when I've been hanging out with friends in Catani Gardens or the pier at night. Probably you're not supposed to use it unless you're a paying customer, but if you know where it is you can sneak in unnoticed pretty easily. And those toilets have been a life-saver for many of us after the Catani Gardens public toilets closed at dusk, so Beachcomber gets an extra star for me because of that, ha! But seriously. Come here for the gelato and the view -- I'm not sure about the rest. read more

When I came here for brunch with my bookclub I wasn't aware that you were supposed to take photos of you food so that you could plaster it up on the internet, so unfortunately I don't have any photos of the meal that I had (not that I can actually remember what it was - it was something breakfasty). I'm not too keen on this place though because, well, there are much better places in St Kilda to have a meal, or even a quiet drink. However, it is quite large, though the last time I was here, which was on a summer afternoon, the outdoor areas were packed and the inside was empty. They also have an icecream parlour around the side, which is a little inconvenient because it is not exactly facing the beach. Beachcomber has been my first choice for a variety of occasions, christmas dinner and drinks with the girls, lunch date with my man and even a new years eve destination for a huge group of friends and family one year. Beachcomber is one of those traditional beachside restaurants specialising in contemporary Australian cuisine and of course seafood! I would highly recommend their antipasto platter; a selection of grilled vegetables, cold meats, creamy cheeses, marinated olives and artichokes and grissini sticks,great for sharing. I also love the lamb salad and the fisherman's basket perfect for tucking into on a hot day on the beach in Summer. The staff at Beachcomber are great they will help you organise any sort of function or event, weather it be a casual dinner date or new year extravaganza. I've been here a few times for a quick bite or a drink outside. It's a pretty solid 3 star place - great views onto the beach and ocean, decent seafood and the usual bar. It's just nothing exceptional - no wow factor in food or service. If your down this way and the other bars are packed, this one is usually a little quieter which is nice. You are also right near the car park which can be handy for keeping an eye on your car. If possible (and it's a nice day) sit outside on the ocean side. It's great people watching. read more

It's a really chilled out atmosphere here, the wait staff are cool but really attentive without being annoying. The meals are really nice but expensive, however if you want to relax and dine by St Kilda Beach Beachcomber is the least expensive along Jacka Blvde. If you choose to eat I have to recommend the brushcetta duo and chilli mussels for a nibble or entrée. The seafood platter for two is just divine, fresh as it should being located on the beach and makes the perfect main. Yes, you pretty much sit right on the beach, but a view of Melbourne's foremost foreshore is no excuse for what goes on at the Beachcomber. Our waiter approached our table with a main, ambiguously announcing the arrival of "fish". Many of us had ordered dishes matching this ambiguous description, but when pressed for more information, our oracle-like host replied "I don't know, it could be a King George Whiting ... or something". I'd like to add at this point that The Beachcomber is predominately a seafood restaurant. After our waiter's fishy faux-pas, we were treated to (surprisingly expensive) microwaved mains accompanied by curiously thick, claggy tartare and cold fries. We ordered drinks - skinny ice coffee without ice cream and acai smoothie whilst waiting for the third to join us. Despite the clean and modern look, the menu is limited, boring and most of all the ingredients look like they just came out of a can of pre cooked food. Went to Beachcomber for a quick stop off for a cocktail. We sat outside in the nice outdoor open area. Ordered a espresso martini & a pina colada. These were served in a reasonable time and the pina colada was served in a fresh coconut and was well presented, Espresso martini was also very nicely made. Arrived in St Kilda and went straight to the beach. The salads here were just "basic,l nothing to write home about. Daughter has baby squid and it was tasty and plentiful. Another had the calamari, which was also good. Great view of the beach and sunset. You couldn't ask for better views while dining. Sit outside and watch the sunset from here in summer - you wont regret it. The meal is also pretty good although there were some low points. The started (Calamari with olives and chili) was one of the worst things I've had. None of the ingredients tasted like they went together and each part threatened to overpower the others. I had the ocean trout while my husband had the seafood risotto and we shared a side of the roasted potatoes. Both of us loved all of this. The biggest problem was this meal was that it took over 2.5 hours. Our order seemed to get lost in the kitchen and when we asked about it, the waitress checked with the cook and said it would be 6 minutes. 30 minutes later we still didn't have our food. I'd give this place ZERO STARS if I could. Why? I wanted to go to the Italian place, and they told me the seating where I wanted to sit wasn't open, so please come through the inside to the other patio. The guy just handed us the menu and told us to choose a table and didn't even walk us... not a complete big deal, but that's not how a restaurant should run. We sit down and not even 1 minute passes and the server came, wasn't friendly and didn't do the normal intro you would normally do as a server. He asks us if we're ready to order, we kindly asked for a few minutes longer. Once we figured out what we wanted, he was no where to be found. Finally we see him running around and he doesn't even look at us or give us some indication that he'd try to be over soon. ATLEAST 20 minutes go by and he still hasn't come over. At that point we are parched and starving. I had to get up and go find a server to take our order. She comes with me, takes our order, which was great. I had ordered a green smoothie, fishermans boat and a pumpkin fritter appetizer. My friend had ordered a beer and a steak. His beer comes out, and 2 minutes later by appetizer comes out WITH my entrée. Where's my smoothie? Not there. Why did my appetizer come out with my entrée? That defeats the purpose of the appetizer. Also, my friends steak comes out 5 minutes after my food. Finally my smoothie comes after everything and it's WARM, taste like grass and water. Nothing else that was in the description. It literally looked like my dog ate grass and threw it up. It also felt like that since it was so warm! Steak was fatty, terrible and hard to cut. Not medium. My appetizer was ok, not very warm. My entrée was COLD. It's almost like that food was sitting there because a server put in the wrong order and once my order came in, they decided to give it to me. I know this happens because I WORK IN THE INDUSTRY. Barely ate my food, same with my friend. We waited to pay, no one came. So 20-25 minutes later, we decided to get up and ask to pay. Once we did, I assume who was the manager, asked for the table number as if I know the table number. It's not my restaurant. He said I had to walk back to look on the table which is ridiculous, but I did so. I paid $110 for the most terrible service and terrible food. McDonalds has better service and food. Coming from me, that means a lot because I would never eat fast food because it's not real food and it's terrible service. What's the difference between a homeless person begging for change and the staff at the Beachcomber? The Homeless person has more customer service and manners than the staff at the Beachcomber. Just don't be fooled coming here because of the location, the service is absolutely shocking and I've been in the hospitality industry for the past 15 years and if any of my staff treated customers in the manner that the Beachcomber lets their staff do, I would give them a hard word or fire them because the way I was treated and other guests was atrocious. The staff look like they are oppressed and don't want to be there. They stare at you and pretend they dont notice you or that they are busy.They are very rude and make you feel guilty for being at their place of employment.Not the vibe you want. They need proper training and to learn how to interact better with customers and time management skills. When we arrived, I was "greeted" by a grumpy lady who didn't say hello she just handed me the menus and pointed at vacant tables. We sat down and went through the menu before someone came up and took our order within minutes, my smoothie which was very delicious came out straight away, our entree of a dozen fresh oysters came out within in ten minutes. They took our plates and then we waited, and waited and waited. I noticed a large group of people who arrived around the same time as us and half of them had meals and the other people were still waiting. They too looked very disgruntled because when they finally got the meals they ordered their friends had already finished their meals. I also noticed a group who must of ordered mains and deserts at the same time and they got everything at once and they looked very disappointed because they had ordered hot food and ice cream so you just imagine the pickle that they are in. We tried at times to get the waitress's attention several times, until my partner stared one down we then asked her where our meals (politely) were and she said in a condescending tone that she would check, She disappeared and came back and walked over to the register stared at us, started talking to her work mates and kept on staring. I felt like they forgot to call our mains after they took away our entree which occasionally does happen, And I felt like this waitress was too scared to come over and tell us, occasionally you forget to call the mains but instead came over and stated: "Our meals are on hold because they have a function on and the kitchen is busy with that and we should just wait a bit longer".No apology at all...Totally not acceptable and also that's not my problem, maybe put more staff on or they should of prepped a day earlier. By this stage we were waiting over an HOUR!!!! We are about to get up and leave and our meals came out, by the way it was a chicken salad and lamb souvlaki which doesn't take too long to make! Also not once did any of the staff came over to check if we wanted drinks or if our meals were ok. By the way the food is very average and overly priced and they get away with it because most of the people that go there are from interstate or tourists that don't really know what it's like. Also when we finished and went to pay the bill, the grumpy lady asked me which table and I pointed to it and she prints out someone else's docket. I told her it wasn't mine and she made a joke: "if I was you I wouldn't of said anything because that's bill is a lot cheaper"! The location is really what makes this cafe, and it's great for a drink or meal if you want to enjoy the beach views and life going past. I agree with other reviewers that it is let down by the service, especially in summer, when they take on a lot of casual staff who are not really up to the task. Winter is much better, but as it's less busy, that's to be expected. Last winter they also had good offers for three courses, plus drink, which were good value at about $25. During busy summer days you can be left waiting for service, but luckily the views are good enough that it's not really too much of a chore. read more
