I like walks on the beach. Or more like, by the beach. A favorite of beach trails that I've enjoyed coming to - lots to see and explore with vibrant flowers, the horizon of the ocean, the sounds of the Amtrak and Metrolink trains passing by. All of it is just amazing. And the best part is, there's so many ways to just have a good time and a good workout on this trail. The Beach Trail is about 2.3 miles long in total, but it can feel like a pretty long walk. AND that's only one-way. Coming back, you have to do another 2.3 miles, if you're returning to the beginning of your route. But you'll really see everything. Love the Beach Trail! read more

We love weekend trips to San Clemente and loved the idea of this walking/bike trail that parallels the beach along with the metrolink rails. We parked at the Metrolink Avenida Estacion (North Beach). This is a paid parking lot which we initially missed seeing. Our destination from here was the San Clemente Pier which is about 2 miles. To find the Beach Trail, walk east, all the way to the end of the parking lot. Our walk started out great until we were about 1/2 mile in. Unfortunately, the trail was closed due to construction for the erosion happening in the area. A construction worker told us it would be a long walk through the neighborhood and he was right. We headed up the stairs into the neighborhood, hoping it would be a doable walk. With no sidewalks and no straight road towards the pier, we decided to turn around and head back to the car. It would have been helpful from the start if there was a sign indicating that a portion of the Beach Trail was closed. Make sure to check for closures before heading to this trail. read more

This is still one of my favorite walks when I want to enjoy the beautiful California weather and my happy place by the ocean. It is a level easy walk right along the ocean and train tracks and if you start at North Beach and head south just passed Calafia Beach you can get in over 6 miles down and back. Between watching the surfliner pass you by, watching people play sand volleyball or just watching the waves crash along the shore it just makes me happy! Plus I'm getting my steps in too! Note: part of the boardwalk is closed due to the hillside being unstable but if you catch low tide you can just walk along the beach. read more

This is a nice little beach walk going from North Beach to Calafia. Its only 2.3 miles. The scenery is beautiful. You are steps away from the ocean. Every so often an Amtrak, Metrolink, or BNSF train will pass by. Its a well kept trail and perfect for all walkers. There was a detour and I had to walk on the beach. Good thing it was low tide. You had to time yourself between the waves. Today was the first Saturday of the month and there were two beach cleanup crews. The Surfriders were by the pier, and at Calafia Orange County Coastkeeper were working. This group also does cleanup on the 2nd Saturday at Huntington Beach tower 9 at Magnolia st. from 9:00 to 11:00. I got there late or I would have helped.. I already signed up for Huntington next week. Every time I come to San Clemente I enjoy walking the trail. After eating its a nice way to burn off a few calories. read more

One of the most enjoyable things to do in Orange County, in good weather. Yes, you can walk from the North Beach parking lot trail to the pier now (I did it on May 27th), however the trail/boardwalk is closed at around the bridge. All you need to do, however, is exit to the beach at that point. You can also walk the entire way on the beach. read more

Still love it and it's beautiful! But a tad of warning, just walked the Trail this past Saturday and a part of it it's closed due to a storm (I guess it's going on for a year). Near Mariposa, a nice local man helped us when we saw the fence ahead. We walked up the stairs and walked through a neighborhood and we were trying to find another way down further down. Another nice local lady who was walking her dog saw us and maybe our looks seemed confused, she showed us the way! Otherwise, we wouldn't have found it, it seems like you go through somebody's yard. Don't hesitate to ask local people to retract back on the trail, they are kind and helpful! Otherwise, great walk, amazing views and nature alongside the track and the ocean with great spots to admire the beach and take photos. Nothing can beat this walk on a sunny day! Paradise! read more

I always enjoy walking on this beautiful beach path and today, Easter Sunday 4/20/25 was even better than I remembered. Phenomenal views and watching the sunset is so incredible!! I'm at the cutest dog on this trail, she was a Basenji and she looked like my dog that I had a while back. And then I saw another Basenji, which was super exciting and made my Easter Sunday phenomenal. The San Clemente Beach trails has some of the best views in the city! It feels clean and safe. You can walk from T-street, the pier and North Beach. No E-bikes are allowed thankfully. You'll see people walking their dogs, walking as a family, jogging and exercising. It's one of my favorite parts about this beautiful beach town! A nice trail to walk, look out over the ocean and get some fresh air. It's a great place to walk your dog, with well defined trails and nice flowering succulents along the sides of the path. The trail offers a few areas where you can cross the train tracks and enjoy the beach. Be careful and aware while walking because at times bicycles can move up on you rapidly attempting to pass. I like to park at the North Beach parking lot, although it can feel a bit sketchy at times. From there, you can head south, enjoy a nice walk to the pier, restaurant and shopping area. The eateries offer some outside dining, where you can enjoy a meal near the fresh ocean air. It's definitely a nice relaxing way to spend an afternoon. You can get a little exercise, take some photos and enjoy a view of the coastline. read more

Beautiful trail for a stroll, it's relatively easy and flat. Should be fine for kids or older people. Trail is dirt, not always shaded so bring some sun protection. I really enjoy jogging on this trail! The San Clemente Beach Trail runs along the coastline for over 2 miles next to some train tracks. You get some amazing views of the ocean and a nice cool breeze to go with it. Parts of it are paved and others parts of it are sand. It's dog friendly and people usually walk, jog, or ride their bikes on it. The most common spots to access the trail and park your car are at the San Clemente Pier, North Beach and Calafia State Park. I grabbed a coffee and walked around the San Clemente Pier recently. The Pier is located pretty close to the halfway point of the trail. I ended up jogging the trail for a good mile and really enjoyed the cloudy morning while listening to the ocean. It is such a beautiful trail and full of activity. It looks like lots of locals jog it early in the mornings. The San Clemente Trail has helpful signage with a map at various points so you know where you are at. This is much appreciated by out-of-town folks like me. read more

This trail is so convenient! Not only is it perfect for running, hiking, biking and walking but it's also great if you're camping in San Clemente or at the State Beach parking and want to walk up to the Pier to grab something to eat. It is very accessible and connects all the way to Doheney. The views of the ocean and cliffs are gorgeous and it spans from paved, to fine gravel to wooden bridge. It's a great connection trail between Dana Point and San Clemente. read more

Been coming here since I was a kid, now you find a parking spots empty because people who book never show up. You can't pay at the site like before so no shows areas could be occupied. Watching this place go to shit is really sad. Almost like you can't even enjoy the luxuries of before unless you own a phone or have access to a computer 24/7. read more

This is definitely a must see while in SoCal! We went on a Monday afternoon and it wasn't too crowded and parking was only $1.50 per hour which was very reasonable. Nice and easy walk along the trail for every level. They have areas for picnicking and playgrounds for kids. I has fun on the swings! read more

Walked this trail and LOVE it! I think the entire span is a little over 5miles along the beach. It's flat and an easy walk. There are restaurants and cafes, little straw shady areas, picnic benches and of course the beach. Perfect for a nice stroll, chill day, or quick meal. read more

This runs for a few miles. It's a dirt pass for bikers, trail runners and good old fashion walking. You can hear the waves, but for much of the trail there's large rocks with only small breaks where you can see people playing in the water and surfing out in the distance. But you never can beat that lovely sound of the waves rolling in. It's a whole different venue than some of the other beaches that have paved paths. Stay on the path long enough you'll run into the pier. Overall any beach experience to me is quite the exuberant experience and lovely. Bring your dogs on a leash and enjoy the view; but mostly just enjoy the sound of the breeze & the waves. read more

For sure if u plan to come here, do not follow the directions on Yelp. Instead, listen to others and park at North Beach. Parking is ONLY $1/day if u get there before 9a. Easy peasy.... I wish this was closer to where I live... I definitely enjoyed the ocean view and waves.... and dolphins. The only thing I really didn't care for was when the trains were going by and blew the horn.... aside from that, love this walking/running trail. Great for dog walks too. Liked the thoughtful layout for handicap access and free parking after 5 pm. Went on a Sunday in August at 5 pm and found parking with no issues at Linda Lane Park. Nice ramp & underpass gave access to beach. Sorry to say dogs not allowed on beach, but ok on path. Path to Pier and back was smooth enough for carful use of wheelchair, with some pulls over train tracks. Not many rough spots. Thankfully the pedestrians and cyclists sharing the path could not have been nicer. read more

Wonderful trail! Parked at North Beach and used my credit card to pay. Paid Parking is never pleasant but at least this is a reasonable price with convenient access to the trail! Depending on your pace - you shouldn't need to pay more than $4 to park here! We woke up early and arrived around 7:50 with our 2 labs. The trail was busy, but not super crowded. The beginning of the trail is dirt and pretty wide, then leads to a bridge (which my black lab hated by the way), the rest is a mix of dirt/sand and concrete. The view is absolutely beautiful the entire way. There are bathrooms and water fountains once you hit the pier. Some parts of the trail do get narrow, so it did get a little awkward when us plus our 2 labs, someone on a bike and others waking/jogging approached at the same time. Everyone is courteous nonetheless and the overall experience was great! So great, we will probably be back very, very soon! We enjoyed the atmosphere, scenery and overall vibe and so did our labs! They've been sleeping the rest of the day... read more

This trail's beauty makes up for what it lacks in length. Measuring less than 3 miles between the San Clemente Metrolink Station and Avenida Califia, the dirt trail runs along the beach next to the railroad track and passes by the San Clemente Pier. In the early morning, it is so tranquil. The few on the trail are outnumbered by the surfers. Even though it's essentially a straight path, the contours of the dirt path eliminate the monotony of running on concrete boardwalks (eg, Huntington Beach). You are also very close to the surf so the sound of the waves is on top of you. There is also a beautiful iron footbridge north of the pier that takes you through a narrow section of the beach. That bridge is the only elevation change on the trail, if only so slight. However there are abundant steep roads/paths/stairs that funnels down to the trail so you can easily incorporate some hills into your workout if you desire. An invigorating walk or run on this trail is really a great way to start off a day! read more

The park rangers here are super nice and friendly but wish they could control the grounds better with loud people partying at 3am and then another loud RV at 11pm at night. The grounds are located right by the San Onofre Power Plant. Exit Basilone Rd and then cruise on down till you see the gate. They offer day passes for $15 for anyone who wants to go surfing or just hang out nearby on the beach. The campsites are right next to each other so if you're looking to social distance with your tents, this isn't the place for you. Also be aware that there will be a bunch of different people who come, but when the ground rules are quiet at like 8pm, that's something you gotta respect. There was a huge loud group of people that came in at 2:30/3am and we ripping wood, yelling and screaming and then left at 8am and the campgrounds folks did nothing about it. The last night my friends and I were there, there was a huge RV and they were blasting music from their car at 11pm. I just wish that the campgrounds host would maybe patrol a little better or maybe just do a courtesy drive by during quiet hours to just make sure everyone is having a good time. read more

Run, bike, walk, skip--or however you like to move along this trail--it's fantastic! The San Clemente Beach Trail stretches for several miles along San Clemente's coastline, providing a safe, car-free way to enjoy the great outdoors. The trail is dirt, so things like rollerblades might not work out too well here. Portions can get crowded during mid-afternoon or sunsets, but that's OK--it just means that people are embracing the outdoors. One of my personal favorite walks is from the Pier just beyond T street -- it's perhaps a little over a mile, but on the way back, you can capture some fun photos that have the pier in the background. 2017: 63/100 read more

Such a nice walk along the coast of San Clemente. We really enjoyed it. It was traffic heavy but that's okay. We took a jogger with my son and there we're some parts that were sand and hard to push the jogger through, but the majority of it was hard dirt. Really nice scenery and just a well kept beach path. This is one of the prettiest spots I have found to run in OC. This trail offers a 4.6 mile round trip with ocean views the entire way. It is mostly flat, with railroad crossings at a few points. The path is shared by runners, walkers and bikers but doesn't seem to get overly crowded. You will see plenty of dogs out walking their people, too. If you have a state parks pass, I recommend starting at Calafia Beach (the trail's southern end), and heading north to the trail's end at North Beach. Otherwise, metered parking is available at both ends as well as near the pier at the trail's midpoint. You can add a little distance to your run by going to the end of the pier and back both times you pass it, and you can also go up/down the many staircases along the way to really get your heart pounding! Come out and enjoy the year-round gorgeous beach weather! read more
