What I paid $2845 for (an additional $1740 for 1/2 labor due upon installation).
    Kate R.

Final edit: trying to be most helpful (and accurate, I hadn't paid as much as I thought I had. $2845 not $4000) to readers considering this contractor. Read his contract carefully. I bent over backwards trying to make this work - even more so over the summer when things seemed to stall and Matt stopped communicating. Why? Because I re-read the contract more closely and realized I had paid $2845 ($1100 or so were for materials) and if things went wrong and I took him to court, per the contract ...I could only recover $1000. I signed that contract. I didn't look closely at the fine print so my best option was to try to get him to complete my bench. So August on, I got extra nice because he had my 1/2 finished project, the $4k I had sunk into it and not a lot of leverage. Matt's rebuttal that I was inflexible or unreasonable when it took longer than he anticipated really doesn't make sense. You can see from my screenshots how hard I was trying to not alienate him.... I don't think he texted me since July without me sending 2-3 text messages asking for an update. And always "be patient." And sometimes resending me the same pictures he sent a month earlier- no progress. The stress of this kept me up at night. So caveat emptor and read the contract carefully! I also updated the amounts because I went back and reviewed the Quickbooks receipts and I hadn't paid $4000 - it was $1740 on 3/1 and $1105 on 4/16 plus I paid for Home Depot and Lowe's materials directly. But not $4000. And some changes (like the backing) did happen after I paid the $1740 deposit on 3/1 but Matt never altered my bill or suggested that I should pay more money or even that the delay was caused by the changes. I was mostly frustrated that he couldn't commit to a date it would be complete. I told him I'd pay more if that's what it would take to get it finished... I remember using the "I want this to be win-win" but I think he lost his interest in this project. My review of Beach Handyman I want to be fair in my review so I'm sticking with the facts and including screenshots from text messages. I think Matt does quality work when he does it. He is also a terrible communicator to the point of unprofessional. I asked Matt to build a custom bench for my kitchen. He said it would take 2-3 weeks and was custom. It started out fun back in late February. I paid an $1740 deposit on 3/1 and then an additional $1105 on 4/16 for materials and the other 1/2 $1740 labor due upon completion. March turned into April turned into May and then June and July. I repeatedly asked for a regular update for the "2-3 week" project. It was slow going but I wasn't in a huge hurry....though it was stressful not knowing when and then IF it would ever be complete. In July we visited his workshop; progress and nice work but no end date for delivery. I'm not sure he did much since the pictures we took on July. Three additional months of me asking for an update every couple of weeks... and getting told this is a custom project so I should just be patient. I repeatedly asked for a weekly update, even if it was no progress - at least I know my project is still on his radar. I was told me to be patient and not rush him on this 2-3 week project...started in March. In early October I asked if he would send me a text message saying "II added this today" or whatever he did... when he worked on my bench. Not even a weekly text. This was again too much to ask! Today is October 25th and we picked up the still not completed pieces from his workshop. It was supposed to be finished and painted and installed in my kitchen last spring....I just had lost faith that Matt would ever get around to completing what had started off as a little fun project. I don't think he has worked on it since July, per the pictures. We were going to pick the unfinished wood pieces up at 5 but he asked if we could come at 7. I think he didn't want to face me. The workshop was locked up and my pieces were left out front. Just left there! Now I have to hire a carpenter to finish what the Beach Handyman started and wasted 8 months of my life trying to nicely badger him to complete. There is something wrong here. Not trustworthy and a disappointing result and a ton of wasted time and energy. Such a bummer. I accept that this was more work than maybe he thought. I also paid him $2845 And I was very patient and understanding for 8 MONTHS. No progress that I can see from what he showed us in July. He just stopped working on it. And left me my $3k wooden boxes outside his shop to pick up. After responding to maybe 1 of my text messages in 4, days later, by the end...It was unbelievably unprofessional. Mr Excuses when he responds. Beware

I also wanted to add an attic pull-down ladder to make access easier, which Matt was happy to accommodate.
