My friends know I like to try out different pilates studios in town. Be Pilates is one of my favourite go-to studios. It's not far from where I live and parking is easy. You can find free parking on the street or nearby lot. I bought their 5-class intro offer and I got to try out classes taught by different instructors and different levels. I also like that they have three levels to choose from: beginners (1), intermediate (1.5) and advanced (2), where I found most other pilates studios only have beginners and advanced. I've tried several Pilates studios in the past, and I was really excited to see that this one offered both level one and level two classes. For my first visit, I attended a level two class with a friend who is also experienced in Pilates. Unfortunately, we both felt that the class didn't meet our expectations in terms of challenge or engagement. It was by far the easiest Pilates class I've taken, which was surprising given that it was labeled as a more advanced level. One of the biggest aspects we noticed was the instructor's delivery--it felt a bit monotone and lacked the energy or enthusiasm that can really elevate a group fitness experience. Additionally, the music was played so softly that it was barely audible, which impacted the overall atmosphere. For many participants, especially in fitness settings, music can be a motivating factor, and this felt like a missed opportunity. In my opinion, this class may be better suited for individuals who are new to exercise or prefer a very gentle, low-energy approach. It could also appeal to a more mature audience looking for a slower-paced session. Special shout outs: Torrie (Level 1): whole body stretching, grounded, light duration holds with simple movements attainable for all body types and fitness backgrounds. She's also very approachable and as a 1st time Pilates goer she made me feel like I fit in even if I didn't know the lingo or fundamentals. Ida (Level 1): calming, breathwork focused. Attentive and jumps in if necessary to clean up your form. Very welcoming and always with a smile. Katy (Level 2): I'm in my early 30s and this gal kicks my butt, which I love. If you want abs, go to her. Her sequences are great and flow so well. Her instructions are crystal clear and make it easy to follow along for a level 2. She is mindful of the # of spring changes so I feel that there's less awkward-ness in the flow of her class if there's not so many instances of having to get up, lay down, etc to change the springs. The majority of the time she is also quick to place a wet wipe at your Reformer at the end of class - very thoughtful gesture! Kevin (Level 1.5): perfect step-up from Level 1 active stretching classes. His pacing for Level 1.5 really starts to get the heart beating and his cues are so crystal clear, very helpful analogies and visualizations. Lately it feels like he's been really inspired because I've been coming to his Thursday 4:30pm class for 5 months and I am loving his pacing more and more. I also like his approach and how he checks in individually and will walk up to each person to ask how they are doing and if there is anything we would like from his class. That unique level of customer service is unmatched, and he does it all with a welcoming smile! Annie (Level 2): Upbeat! Sign up for her classes if you want to SWEAT and be challenged. It's a miracle how gifted she is to sequence a class for a full-body workout within 45 minutes. She pushes her class to the limits but is always kindly motivating and for the most part I feel is spot-on with her counting and pace. She is observant enough to notice when her class is gassed out and provides enough rest time between series' to keep the momentum going. I really enjoy her creative ideas for the fun, challenging positions/poses that are contemporary to Pilates. Her pacing for Level 2 is quick and she is able to get us into the positions quickly without delay so the transitions to positions never feel like there is dead airtime waiting for instruction. She is also genuinely kind and quick to say hello from afar. Her professionalism and warmth are an asset to Be Pilates. Have been a member since September 2024 - present (February 2025) and have enjoyed attending. I am very happy that this business model of unlimited classes 1x/day exists. I have researched quite a lot to find something to fit my fitness goals and this has been such a nice fit into my lifestyle. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I was very nervous about trying Pilates and this studio because I'm in my 60s and fairly out of shape after decades at a desk job.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I couldn't put weight on my knees or turn my head without pain. When I looked at the pictures online, I saw young, fit people and thought perhaps it wasn't for me. But I later learned those photos are of the instructors. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I was pleasantly surprised to find people of all ages in class--both younger and older than me.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The instructors took the time to ask about injuries or other issues and helped me modify the exercises so I wouldn't hurt myself. After going twice a week for a few months, my neck pain was gone, and I could do more exercises on my knees with padding. Now my knees don't give me any trouble at all. Pilates is the best thing I've done for myself, and my only regret is not starting years ago to stay fit as I aged. I've had classes with Jackie, Torrie, Ida, and Danny so far, and they are all fantastic instructors. Though I live close enough to walk, I understand the concerns about parking since the lot next to the building is small and serves several businesses. However, there is street parking, and around the corner on Hill and Washington there are spaces across from Millie's, next to where the Rite Aid used to be. I thought it was time to write this review because this studio has truly helped me regain strength in my body.
