DevaCurl".. You think they would have at least one person that stands out as a stylist who is black hair savvy. That's only what's right.. Right? To have at least one stylist in the building who is completely comfortable working with the many different shapes, coils and kinks of black hair. Isn't it shocking that DevaCurl / "Be Inspired" doesn't have properly trained stylists in that area?
To begin, I called Be Inspired and spoke with a stylist about my hair goals and the overall goal of my appointment. I wanted a DevaCut on my type 4 hair (the tightest type of coils and curls.) I mainly wanted to make sure that there was a stylist who was comfortable with my kinky hair. I was told, with attitude over the phone, "well that's the point of our salon. We are trained to work with any curls." So after feeling like an idiot for asking, I of course made an appointment. What could go wrong? "I'm with "curl professionals".
Let's get into how clueless Debby is when it comes to black hair now lol. It's almost cringeworthy watching her try her best to act like she knows what she's doing when you can see all in her attitude that she's struggling like no other lol. She first had to get help detangling my hair. w/ type 4 hair, detangling is a whenever needed process Debby. You detangle with conditioner and you detangle while applying product through the hair and if it's not turning out how you want it too, you add water to the section and try to detangle it again with more slip that time.
Honestly, if you can't even finger detangle without help yet, why are you even working on the tightest curl pattern? Also, what was the problem with asking me for help? How easy would it have been for me to reach my hands back and show you what to do. Or better yet, do it for you Lol. It would have taken me 5 minutes tops to detangle my whole head versus your 40 minute semi affective detangling session.
Use your moral compass next time and be honest about your experience so the client can have the option to play it safe and walk away or to take a chance.
Second, after the wash, Debby stuck me under a warm hooded dryer. It dried 90% of my hair. The rest of the 10% was dried with a hand diffuser WITH HEAT. Let me repeat that again: Debby dried my 90% dry hair on a HOT setting.. if you're a Naturalista, you know how big of a mistake that could be for the one time. Heat damage is real and it happens fast. Why would you not take the extra time to dry my hair on a cool setting... why? Are you even a professional?
Lastly, once everything was dry, I spoke with Debby about the DevaCut. I was NOT about her cutting my hair. Why? Because it looked nothing like my hair. My hair is somewhat dry at home, but in the salon it was SEVERELY dry. She used waaaay too much DevaCurl's Super Stretch in my hair which made it look like I slapped half a bottle of the strongest gel (x: Gorilla Snot) on my hair and went sunbathing. My hair was so dry and shrunken up it didn't even fall reaching my shoulders like it normally would. It barely reaches my earlobes... that's not shrinkage honey. That's called too much gel, ZERO oil and not enough clips
I knew just by looking at it my hair was going to be crunchy.. Sure as shit, when I touched my hair I saw tons of white flakes fall right on to my lap. My hair was a disaster. My heart completely sank in disappointment and I definitely couldn't follow through with a DevaCut. The only reason why I made an appointment to begin with.. I left so upset and disappointed.. yet again.
I have so much anxiety that my ends are going to be damaged now. I'm hoping soaking my hair in oil overnight will help save any hard to manage frizzy ends and heat damage.
Moral of the story: If you have type 3c to 4c hair, DO NOT GO TO THIS especially if you recently transitioned or in the middle of transitioning. & please, for the Love of Curls, don't sit in Debby's chair.
(For the record I'm a fully transitioned naturalista. I'm just assuming that if Debby can't work on just my natural hair alone, she definitely would lose her shit working on hair with two or more textures. Don't even try it transitioners!)
