First impressions, there's a lot of pig memorabilia in here. The hush puppies are delicious, They are nice and crisp & golden brown on the outside while being moist in the center. The waitress didn't give our party enough of them and never refilled the baskets.Strike #1.I ordered the pork loin with baked beans and bbq slaw. The pork loin was dry and the sweet bbq sauce lacked flavor. The bbq slaw was decent but the baked beans were tasteless. Strangely there weren't any desserts listed on the menu. We pass by this place every time we travel from Charlotte to Blowing Rock/Boone and every time i say, "You know we should stop at the big pink place for some BBQ". I wish i would have kept driving, or at least when i pulled in on a Saturday for lunch and realized that there were no other cars in the parking lot, taken a hint and left. While the pulled pork itself was acceptable (not great, but certainly ok), as some of the other reviews point out, their vinegar and tomato sauces are not very good (i would have given the review 1 star, but the mustard sauce was very good and +1 the review alone), and their sides are mediocre at best. The baked beans must have been sitting in the pot or slow cooker since the day before. They were complete mush. The slaw was acceptable, if you like cured slaw, but it did not compliment the meat or vinegar sauces very well. Hush puppies were good, but honestly i do not go to a restaurant for hush puppies :) At the end of the day, keep driving to Lenoir and find another BBQ spot to stop at, the BBQ Man will leave you wishing you had. read more

Go to Simms if its open, and bring cash cuz they dont take credit. im sure BBQ man is a nice guy but his BBQ not all that great. When you have to use bbq sauce, its not good bbq. This is a must if you are traveling on 321 through Hudson. The BBQ chicken is the best I have ever had. It's moist with great smoke flavor and a nicely bbq'd skin. The ribs are also very tasty and meaty but I'm a chicken girl. Don't let the decor and pink exterior fool you. This is real barbecue. This is one of my favorite barbecue restaurants anywhere in North Carolina. I grew up on Eastern style North Carolina Barbecue having our own smoker and cooking many hogs and I can't do it any better than The BBQ Man. Although vinegar-based sauce is my favorite he makes all of his own sauces and has several varieties to choose from. His french fries are fresh cut and are as good as you will get anywhere. I have eaten here probably 30 times and it's always consistent and delicious. I have no idea why the parking lot is not filled up everyday when they open. Where else can you get a loaded barbecue sandwich with slaw french fries hush puppies and a drink for $6? Worth the trip! read more

So I went here tonight and it's my third try at bbq since getting to the area almost 3 weeks ago. I would never go back to the other 2 places but I would definitely come back here. First thing I notice when I get it out of the car is the smell of smoke (it was missing at the last place I went to). I ordered the half rack of ribs that comes with 2 sides and hush puppies. For the sides I had slaw and collard greens. Everything was really good only complaint I have is with the greens they had a little more vinegar than I am normally use to but it didn't stop me from eating them. read more

If you don't want to stay at home and boil the water to make Kraft mac and cheese, then head on down to The BBQ Man. I was skeptical when entering the building, considering my party was the only one in the building other than the waitstaff. I should've stuck to my guns and walked out the door. The dated decor was sad. Paneling that didn't match up, hundreds of dollars wasted on various porcelain pig and cows, a very apathetic waitress, and the most memorable -- a horrible excuse for southern barbecue. Dry, dry, dry. Not to mention the smallest portions I've ever seen. The logo for the restaurant looks like it was thrown together in Microsoft Paint for god sakes. The "pit master" doesn't even bother to present the buns as if they aren't pulled out of a bag. This place was so, so sad. I won't be going back anytime soon and you should just drive down the road to Hannah's. read more

I have eaten at the BBQ many many times and found the food to be excellent. In fact, it the best BBQ I have ever had. The BBQ is good enough to eat without any sauce (which I do most of the time) and I also like the different sauces, mustard, vinegar & sweet, which adds variety. I have had their friend chicken (Sundays) and been through the week and had ribs. Also, their french fries are the home cut style and are really great. Portion sizes are big and the staff treats you like family. Also, the BBQ mans makes a point to come out ask how everything was. I think you will love it... Ribs and chicken are just the best here. The ribs are slow oven roasted and finished to order on on the grill. This makes the ribs fall off the bone good. Sides are excellent as well. Hush puppies are good but not great. They need a bit of onion so they just aren't just fired cornbread. Restaurant is decorated with too many pig niknacks too see them all. read more

Warning, the following review may turn your stomach..... My wife and I stopped here for dinner on our way back to Hickory from Boone. The novelty of a large pink building is the only thing good about this place. Walking in, we were excited by the many bbq cooking trophies and awards that were sitting around . The hostess showed us to our seat, essentially giving us our choice of tables since there were only 2 other tables with patrons at the time. The service was very poor and the food was worse. The waitress took our drink order, and 10 minutes later she finally brings our drinks to the table. I was able to see her chatting with the other staff during this time. The hush puppies that came out prior to the meal were decent, and they do have a variety of sauces on the table for you to try. That is where the positives end! I had pulled pork bbq, which is my "go to" at all bbq restaurants, and my wife ordered a couple of vegetables as her meal. After 20 minutes, I see our food being carried to our table. The excitement ended when the food was placed on the table. The pork on my plate smelled like animal feces. I want to ensure you that the last statement was not an exaggeration. I am not sure what type of sauce could be used that would possible give pork that smell, but its one that I had never experienced before. I did my best to choke down a few bites, but a few bites is all I could handle. The sides (Baked Beans and Potato Salad) were less than desirable as well. My wife also said that the sides of vegetable that she ordered well not good, as she only finished a few bites herself. We quickly got our check and headed for the door, only to find that there was a dog roaming around behind the counter and in the lobby. The dog belonged to the person working the counter apparently, so I figured that the dog is a regular there. The lobby was a good distance from the kitchen, but it still gave me a very uncomfortable feeling. A restaurant is no place for animals, unless they are there as a service pet. This is the first review, positive or negative, that I have ever written on a restaurant. I hope that this review is helpful to anyone who is considering eating at "The BBQ Man". read more

By far the best BBQ in Caldwell county. Only two complaints and they're minor. 1- Short hours, seems every time I'm in the mood to go there they're already closed or weren't open at all that day. 2- No real ribs, unlike several of the other reviewers I don't consider "baby back ribs" to qualify as ribs and should remain the fare of places like Chile's and Appleby's where they were popularized. To be fair though it's almost impossible to get a real rib in North Carolina (no idea why that is) outside of a Chinese restaurant which really isn't the same as a classic BBQ rib but still preferable to "baby backs". read more

I attended a pinning ceremony that CCC&TI held here for one of their graduating classes. Bad choice!!! To start off with the group couldn't sit together as a whole. If you had more than 4 guest, your table had to be split in to two tables or you just had to squeeze in on top of each other. The wait time was ridiculous! If there was more than one waitress, I'm sure the wait time wouldn't have been as bad. The service could have been better but seeing as how one waitress had to take care of so many people, she did a good job overall. The food, ugh. I don't even know where to begin. We were told at the beginning that we only had 2 options: Bbq, baked beans, slaw or half chicken, baked beans, and slaw (the plates came with hushpuppies as well). We were also served hushpuppies while we waited (I didn't want to leave anything out). Our table ordered water with the exception of two people which ordered soda. Those who were brought water received a cup of ice and a bottle water( I found that unusual but I'm sure they are not the only ones that do that). My opinion when it comes to the food, well, it was just nasty!!! I know some may agree and others may not but I guess that is the whole point of these reviews. The slaw tasted sour. I know some people like vinegar and others like a more sweeter tasting slaw but I took one bite and spit it out into a napkin. It was just nasty. The baked beans tasted the same way to me. They had a taste that I just couldn't get past. The hushpuppies were small and to sweet for me but not terrible. I only ate one and that was enough. The chicken looked amazing but I don't think it tasted as good as it looked. A few bites and I was done with it also. When it came time to pay, we were told that the gratuity was already added in. I paid for 2 chicken plates, 1 water, and 1 coke and it was $28.00 and some change. I believe if I have to pay for my own meal, I should be able to choose what I want to order and not be told what I can order. If I am going to pay that price for two people, I would have definitely went somewhere else. Ridiculous!!! My husband and I were driving from Blowing Rock to Charlotte Sunday midday. We'd seen the sign for BBQ Man and the big pink quonset hut on our way from Charlotte but didn't have time to stop. Sunday hours are limited to noon to 2pm so we made sure to get there by 1:30p. This Sunday the after church crowd was long gone giving us the chance to chat with our friendly waitress and enjoy a very tasty lunch. A previous reviewer accurately described the decor (all pig all the time) and size so no need to go into that. To the food...we wanted to try a mix of the meat so we ordered both chopped pork and the 1/2 rack/chicken combo. While we waited, the ribs take a little extra time, we tried the hush puppies and sampled the 4 different bbq sauces. Again another reviewer described them correctly, all I can say is we liked them all, t's just a matter of personal taste and which meat or side you're eating. When 2 large plates of food arrived, I knew we were in trouble. The chicken breast was juicy and had a nice flavor. The chopped pork had a good smoke and spice to it, would have loved it on a sandwich with slaw. Our favorite of all three, the ribs! Tender, fall off the bone with a perfect crisp carmelization on the outside, no rushing here. Our only disappointment was that we'd only ordered a 1/2 rack but frankly we couldn't eat it all. Both came with 2 sides so were able to sample the collards, slaw, potato salad and fries. All were excellent. As we were leaving with leftovers packed to fly home with us, our waitress gave us a menu suggesting that the next time we're in the area, we could call ahead and they'd have our order all ready for pickup. We were only given two options for our event dinner; BBQ plate with slaw, beans and hush puppies or chicken plate with slaw, beans and hush puppies. There were families that were getting mac-n-cheese for their children. We were not allowed any options on the plate other than what was stated. The BBQ tasted like dirty dishwater. I added a small bit of the tomato based BBQ sauce and it tasted like I had just added more dirty dishwater to the mix. I was told the chicken tasted as bad. The slaw had the same sour dishwater flavor as the bbq. The hushpuppies put on the table for everyone were hard, dry and cold. The hushpuppies on the plate were the same but warm. The group at our table and the next table were given one single check which the waitress deposited in front of the oldest person at the table. Unfortunately the gratuity was added in already. Though we were family we are mostly adults and wanted to pay separately. I ended up paying for the entire table which was too much for such terrible food that you had no choice in choosing. read more
