I had the famous filet mignon dish with the Brie risotto--and oh my god--cannot understate how great the risotto/meat was.

Huge selection of wines mostly Argentinean/Chilean and European only two braiZilian wines on the. Lower price spectrum but good. We tried the picadilho de Rea. I ordered-- Entrée- green salad, which had tomato, carrot, hard bolded egg, corn and a tasty, light dressing. Main dish- grilled fish with herbs and butter with broccoli rice. Dessert- chocolate mousse with condensed milk on top. --everything was delicious and I was very satisfied. Here is the kicker, they have a wine cellar! In the back of the restaurant, there are over 2,000 labels with wines from every region. The wine advisor nudged us into ordering a half bottle of a French red wine. Usually fish doesn't go with red wine, but she was right, this paired just fine with my fish (I am not a fan of white wine). It was priced at R$36, but they gave it to us at a discounted rate of R$20. The patio upstairs was not open while I was there for lunch, but I have walked by in the evening and it always seems lively. The ambiance was great. Nice big windows and a good crowd. I definitely recommend this place.

Rancho Portuguese is directly across from a well lit gas station on a double lane highway. I used to come to Rancho Portuguese often. Been more than 10 times. But sadly one day I realized they prefer Brazilian clientele and hate serving foreigners or gringos. You experience these sort of ignorant Cariocas here and there when you spend a lot of time in Rio. So after waiting over an hour for food and watching my glass sit empty for 20 minutes while also observing him attentively serve every Brazilian, seeing their food arrive, etc....I asked to cancel my order. Instead of apologizing or even making an attempt to fix the problem, his cocky response was to smile broadly, give me a sarcastic thumbs up, insult me in Portuguese while thinking I don't understand him, and mockingly wave at me as I walked out of the restaurant. So now I go to Gaja D'Oro. It is in a beautiful building by the beach, offers much better service, a similar high end Portuguese menu, and I have never been offended to my face after being a loyal customer who spent more than 500 reals per person every time I went.

Sadly we came hunting for feijoada, which they weren't serving that day. So we ordered the Greek style octopus which sadly came as a cheesey potato stew. It was ok; I prefer my seafood fresh and citrusy vs. buttered and stewed but that's just my preference. Servings here are huge by the way, and beware.. and they take the plates to another table to cut up before they serve you (so if you're a food-picture-taker-obsessor like me, pay attention and be sure to ask before they portion). My friend ordered the chicken milanese which I learned is very popular in South America and it was very delicious. It's like a fried/thinned cutlet with mashed potatoes and gravy. The gravy may have double for the octopus stew now that I think about it. I literally LOLd when my hearts of palm salad came out. It had no dressing (not abnormal in SA) and was it was just literally 10 giant hearts of palm sticking up off the plate. After I dressed it myself I enjoyed it, I've never eaten palms of this size but definitely one noted , Would have loved to see it paired with some butter lettuce, onions, tomatoes, corn maybe - anything? The Pao de Queijo/Cheese empanada thing was good, nothing mind blowing. The servers were very friendly and kind. Just so bummed I couldn't try the feijoada. Overall, I was pretty surprised at the experience given their 5-star rating, but its just a fresh humble reminder expectations are a little different in Rio compared to SF- and that is totally ok:)

Hands down this was the best meal I had in Rio. Me and a friend shared some sort of grilled seafood platter that had a little bit of everything. I knew I had ordered the right plate when I tried the Octopus and it was perfectly cooked, just like the fish, the shrimp and every other item in our platter. The pasteles were also very good and the service was excellent. While I was too busy eating my platter to remember what the rest of our party of 12 ordered, everyone was happy with their meal. It isn't easy to please a party of 12.

The small restaurant offers plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and for those who prefer the bar, there's one of those to enjoy a meal from as well. The wine list is great, as it should be for a place that specializes in the stuff, and they have a handful of bottles in the special fridge that ensures the freshness of each glass served. The food was a surprise. Expecting to have a decent meal, our dishes turned out to be really fantastic. I went with a half order of the seafood tagliatelle and loved every bite - especially bites of the perfectly seasoned shrimp. The pasta was nicely al dente and the flavorful tomato sauce was a light and fragrant. My date's gnocchi was also on point and came served in an adorable light blue skillet. Her portion proved larger than mine but she had no trouble making her way through the potato pasta covered in chunky tomato sauce and topped with slices of melted Brie. As far as casual restaurants go, this Italian spot is going to be a new go-to for me.

Unfortunately my first pour was more like a half pour, definitely under the amount. The second pour was much better. The pasta was the best part of the meal. I had the meat and mushroom ravioli and it was deliciously tasty with a hint of sweet. The penne pasta with salmon was good if you're a fan of dill. They offered freshly grated cheese but I wish they also offered some freshly grated pepper. The affogoto was good. The ice cream left a little more to be desired, but the illy espresso made up for it. Service was great and the space is nice. We sat in the back before it got crowded. They attended to us well and even provided a chef's sample at the start of the meal, a hot egg based soup with a touch of pesto. They did bring us two bottles of water, only one of which was ordered. Both were charged to our bill. Note they also add a 12% service tax. I would definitely come back for some delicious Italian food.

You can go inside and order drinks off the menu (including draft beer), or you can go outside and order the bottles of beer that they have there. But you can't do both from inside, unless you're seated by the ledge and lean over. Another strange thing is that you have to tell the cashier what you want, pay, and then she'll tell the bartender. If you just tell the bartender he won't do anything but look at you funny. This system doesn't work very well because you'll see lines forming for the cashiers while the bartenders sit around waiting to make a drink. Is it that hard to pour a draft beer? You know someone else is going to order one. It gets packed and seems to attract the American frat boy type, though I don't know why. The music is good and loud and the crowd spills out onto the street, where you have to be careful because it attracts some shady characters. Expect to smell pot. It has a lot of character and is definitely unique, but bottom line, if every other place was closed I might come here. So would everyone else.
