Came to Cervantes for lunch after seeing great reviews on Yelp. It's in Copacabana but about 3-4 blocks away from the beach. My friend and I sat outside and ordered sandwiches--what they specialize in. The service was the fasted we received so far. Staff was friendly. I ordered the filet sandwich and a shrimp pastry similar to an empanada. Both were delicious--what stood out was the bread. This place was one of our favorites in Rio. We actually returned back twice. Our favorite was the most famous dish and claim to fame at this place. Fillet mignon w sweet pineapple and onions. It's the perfect combo! The sweetness and juicy Bess from the pineapple, the salty ness from the meat that's perfectly medium rare, the grilled onions!! The bottom tends to get super soggy super quick from all the juicy mess so prepare to get messy and have lots of napkins. Service was pretty good they automatically add on the service free which is 10%. There was a little language barrier the second time we came and basically had to send back 2 different sandwiches in order to get the right one that we actually wanted to order. We went earlier in the day so it was not crowded, so a lot of workers were just standing around in the front talking. I've been told that a trip to Rio De Janeiro is wasted without stopping at Cervantes for a their classic sandwich. Fortunately, our friend is a local and made sure we didn't miss out. We stopped in for lunch and ordered the classic Cervantes which comes with filet steak, cheese, and pineapple which is served on a brioche style bun. It's one of the most unique and delicious sandwiches I've ever had. I also ordered a beef empanada and that was also perfectly prepared and extremely tasty. They have many other items but with a sandwich that good I can't see myself exploring if I make it back. The service is fantastic and the restaurant has a classic old school feel. If you ever get the chance, to grab one of Cervantes fantastic fillet mignon sandwiches while visiting Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro, DO IT!!! I prefer the bar portion of this restaurant that opens up onto Rua Barata Ribeiro, #7... you can either stand right at the bar for service or grab one of the small tables they have there on the sidewalk. Sadly, do not show up on Mondays as they are closed! The rest of the time they open at 12 noon and stay open till at least four or 5 AM in the morning I thought that their pork sandwiches could not to be surpassed on my world sandwich ratings.... until I had their sandwich with filet mignon, cheese, grilled pineapple, and caramelized onions. Hands down the BEST FILET MIGNON SANDWICH IN THE WORLD!!!!...I got it with cheese no pineapple (although many seem to LOVE the fresh pineapple slice)...Three large filets, hot, juicy and perfectly cooked, Thick piece of Cheese melted on top...Super fresh Roll...Ice Cold Chopp (Draft Beer)...Awesome in every way!!!! A bit pricey at about $10 for a sandwich but WELL worth it....If you consider yourself a foodie and don't stop here while in Rio you will have missed something that simply SHOULD NOT BE MISSED...You will have only yourself to blame!!! I was lucky to travel Brasil with my Brazilian friends, so I got to see (at least I'd like to think I did) more than the typical American traveler. We'd gotten tired of going to nicer restaurants and spending R$80/person, and just wanted something quick, cheaper, and delicious! My Paulista friend chat with our Carioca hostel owners and they all pointed at the nearby Cervantes, where we just HAD to try a Carioca style sandwich. We each got a filet mignon sandwich with pineapple and were blown away! (So much that Paulista my friend came back the next day for lunch to get the same thing). Usually I don't LOVE fruit/meat combos (i.e. Hawaiian pizza), but the thought of this filet mignon sandwich (2 months later) has me salivating!!! Preferred my super yummy steak, cheese and pineapple sammy to the grilled chicken at Galeto Sat's which is literally right next door. The chicken at GS was well seasoned but dry, while this sandwich was meltingly tender and delicious, with a perfect interplay of savory filet, sweet meaty pineapple, and juice-soaked bread. The only downside is you have to eat standing up, but the guys at the counter couldn't be any sweeter, and the Caipirinhas they whip up are tasty and strong. An old stapple of the district, this is the perfect place for a pit stop in between events or to crunch that late-night hunger before going home. Place open till 4am every day. I used to come here every night for dinner on past visits, but, to be honest, it isn't what it used to be. Maybe I came on an off night. Maybe it's changed hands because none of the waiters who have been there for years were working. We ordered a very simple dinner of chicken Milanese and patatas purée (mashed potatoes). The chicken was thick and under seasoned and tasted slightly of old cooking oil. It also had floating bits of bone in it which was a little alarming. The potatoes were dry and tasteless.
