At my most recent dental cleaning appointment, I was disappointed to learn that Lottie, the dental hygienist I've been seeing for quite some time, was no longer with the practice. Lottie was always welcoming and consistently made a point to check in on how I was doing while performing her work. She was thorough, gentle, and thoughtful--someone who made you feel seen, valued, and genuinely cared for. Her presence always added a sense of ease to the appointment. Unfortunately, my experience with the new hygienist was quite different. Although she was technically thorough, she was not very welcoming or personable. I sensed it immediately--from the first moment she looked at me as I turned the corner. It was clear this would be a very different kind of experience. Dental cleanings can be uncomfortable to begin with, and when the person working inches from your face seems disconnected or indifferent, it only magnifies the discomfort. I didn't feel like a patient--I felt like a task. An object. Just a mouth being cleaned. It was a deeply unsettling feeling. Thankfully, when the dentist came in, she was as warm and professional as always. Her kindness offered a moment of relief, and for a second, I thought she may have sensed something was off. My own demeanor had shifted--I couldn't wait to leave. Despite the positive interaction with the dentist, it wasn't enough to offset the earlier experience. When it came time to schedule my next appointment, I requested a different hygienist. I won't put myself in that situation again. Recommendation: I sincerely hope the practice sees this review as an opportunity for reflection and provides constructive feedback to the hygienist involved. Interpersonal connection and emotional intelligence are just as important in patient care as clinical skills. Lastly, a broader piece of feedback for the practice: I'd love to see, over time, an increase in African American, Hispanic American and neurodiverse staff members, reflective of the growing diversity in the patient population. Needless to say I was excited to go. After 2 years of baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide. I was very much looking forward to having them cleaned. They are a very nice, clean, family practice. Everyone is sweet, they treat all patients with the same sweet kindness, which I find so refreshing in today's world. The office and patients are a diverse, group, and everyone always seems so upbeat. The vibe is also no rush. It's not overly booked, they spread appointments out properly, or they are just so laid back, they act like nothing bothers them. I have a whole series of appointments scheduled, and today I accidentally missed one. No scolding, no rescheduling, no extra charges. Just a pleasant understanding, and they let me come right in, 30 minutes late and took me right back. I was shocked. I was expecting at least a lecture haha. If you know, you know. Not that I recommend being late or no showing. But it seemed they really understood my disabilities, and work really well with me. I feel very respected and relevant. I have cognitive decline and forgetting is a harsh reality of mine. The place is spotless, they are always doing something, no one is sitting around, but no one is overly rushed or overwhelmed. My Dentist was just as sweet, patient, and understanding. Very knowledgeable and I trust them completely. Parking is super easy, and plenty of it. So far, I have had a deep scale cleaning, a crown fixed, and going back next week for a filling. Then we will start working on my gum disease. They offer a lot of services. To further elaborate, the entire staff at Elmwood Dental Group is incredible.. dentists, dental assistants, hygienists, and front desk staff-literally everyone there! Elmwood Dental Group make visiting the dentist an extremely pleasurable experience. More recently, my four year-old son fell face first onto a bench while visiting the Strong Museum of Play. With a quick call to Elmwood Dental, they had us in office in less than an hour. Their staff are so amazing with the little ones! Dr. Chris made his x-ray super painless, and as much fun as a four year-old can have getting an x-ray on a tender tooth. Dr. Comfort even gave out her cell number in case he had an issue over the weekend, while the office was closed. Additionally, I want to add that Kayla, the hygienist who worked on my two young boys, made it so fun for them, it seemed like a playdate. Same goes with the filling that Dr. Comfort performed on my older son. He was genuinely enjoying himself and having fun the whole time. I love this practice and would recommend it to anyone in need of dental care. Which is everyone, really. My family has only been going here for about a month, but already the staff feel like family.
