They're taken out both in the mornings before opening, and in the afternoon after they're closed to the public. The birds are not let out during typical business hours for the most part because of the risk of them flying away hence the locked entrance which requires you to ring a doorbell. This is only for their safety, but be assured that they are happy! If they weren't they would definitely show signs of distress like plucking or other nervous behaviors. You can go in and get a free tour, get shown animals and even have the opportunity to pet some of the guinea pigs for example. I believe this is such a vital part of the Queens community. As a clinical nursing instructor, I have arranged to tour the facility with my nursing students the past 3 semesters. The house itself is architecturally beautiful, having undergone a remarkable transformation a few years ago. Top designers and architects donated time, resources and expertise in creating a 5 star experience. Think lux hotel, an oasis for pediatric patients and their families who require hospitalization at one of the area hospitals. Common rooms themed to comfort children and provide diversion and relief from the impact that their illness has. Amenities for family members include a gym, meditation room, business center, tv and video game rooms and laundry. The themed bedrooms are beyond words. There are also outdoor patios and gardens. There are always volunteer groups home cooking meals and baking daily on premises to feed weary families. The aromas are intoxicating. Ronald McDonald House brings a sense of normalcy and belonging back to those affected by a child's illness. They have a number of locations throughout the borough, but this Forest Hills location is among their busiest. It's been under some much needed renovation as of this summer and will hopefully be an even better facility for the community. While their mission to help enrich the greater Queens community has always been at the forefront, their work during the pandemic has been especially noble: they provided and partnered with local businesses to help distribute meals to those in need, provided aid to the homeless, and services for new immigrants. There's a lot more that they've done that I've missed, but that's just some of the ways they're doing good for all. I used to think this was like a local YMCA or children's center, but they really help individuals of all ages. In addition to childcare, they also have programs for teens and adults, and programming to help empower folks in the workforce. In addition, they have programs for after-school activities, LGBTQ youth, free English classes, and venue space for those who are looking to host for special occasions. They're always looking for new volunteers and for families / individuals in need of aid / assistance.

They have various programs throughout the week and they also offer full day services for when school is out. The only downsides to me are: A. They could have more learning related activities or choices for parents to select from. B. Not really a downside but something to be aware of is that they are closed on some Jewish holidays when school is in session. The plus side is that they do offer a summer camp that our little one really enjoyed. The counselors who work in the after school may also be counselors in the summer so it does offer some continuity for the kids where they can see similar faces and friends.

When brought to their attention, all they did in response was to say that this was the only option other than taxis or access a ride which are absolutely not options. Taxis are an added cost and access a ride, unreliable. When we said this, we were questioned as to what we wanted for our son and when we informed them that we would like more educational and productive experiences for him we were told "good luck". As I said if I could give a lower rating I absolutely and emphatically would. Disgraceful to think that these adults are in charge of taking care of people with disabilities. I am furious as to how they are forgotten and considered a hindrance. We count on people that they will do their best for our children and eventually adults. It has been a struggle with this particular location to say the least and will no longer be sending our son here. I hope and pray that this will help others that are contemplating sending their children here to think otherwise. It's an absolute shame and I do wholeheartedly hope they close this location shortly.
