He said yes but that no one was there. I explained that I confirmed the day and time. I put the bags down to call and see if I can get someone on the line. He immediately said NO YOU CANNOT WAIT HERE and grabs his radio as if he was going to call someone else for backup?? Extremely rude and hostile. I live in a doorman building in midtown and have never seen them act like this when receiving guests. I understand the need to keep the space open with covid but it took me less than 5 minutes to contact Oscar. I walked all the way from 10th for this reception. Never again. I'll be looking for other places to donate clothing and will make sure to pass along the message.

They are a woman led organization that offers help in interviewing skills, allows women to get free business clothing for interviews and helps them learn how to function in a professional workplace. The goal is for the women to become self-sufficient, an aim I can certainly get behind. One of the things Bottomless Closet does is take clothing donations for women from the general public. I recently stopped by here to donate business clothing that was too big on me. There are a number of things I like about this organization: 1. They have their public records available online so you can review where any financial donation you give goes to. I did not see corporate greed when I investigated. 2. They are a local charity helping local women. I firmly believe charity begins at home & for those who feel likewise, this seems a good place to take respectable business clothing that no longer fits. 3. The staff I dealt with were polite, friendly and informative, particularly the woman I spoke to on the phone before dropping off my clothes. I did not get the attitude that my clothing donation meant nothing to them & they just wanted to get money. They have a high demand for plus sizes but the woman I spoke to said my size 5-7 items would be appreciated. 4. They have evening hours on Tuesday evenings so if you do not have time to do their regular clothing drop off (Monday-Thursday from 9-5 p.m.), you can call and arrange a drop off then. Now, it IS a little tricky to get here but all you have to do is go into the Hotel Pennsylvania and take the elevator to their suite (a lower level from the main floor). They have tax forms right at the front desk and they will let you leave the clothing right there. Another important detail: you can NOT get clothing here unless you are one of their clients. This means whatever you donate will actually go to a woman in NYC who needs it. They also DO NOT take men's clothing. This is STRICTLY women's business clothing. I may end up donating more items here if I can't get alterations on some things that I've never or rarely been able to wear.

It only caters to the hispanic mostly mexican community that could be why she was hesitant in interviewing me. And so i wouldnt have been a fit. Their philosophy is it doesnt matter if someone is illegal or not. Okay but i would think it should. Either way as beneficial as i could be if you are not spanish speaking you may not feel like a fit. My spanish is not so bad but i still wouldnt want to dedicate my time and energy to this organization. Good luck to others but not for me.

CIDNY (Center for the Independence of the Disabled of New York) serves the disabled in the lower part of the borough of Manhattan; the Harlem ILC (independent living center) takes care of upper Manhattan. It's one of many ILCs around the country and one of a few in the five boroughs. People with all disabilities, including invisible disabilities, are welcome to take advantage of the services offered here, including counseling, advocacy, and assistance with employment or daily living skills. The main drawback is that the counselors are often overwhelmed by their caseloads. This is not surprising, since they're about the only game in town; it's extremely hard to navigate the system alone, and CIDNY provides a supportive environment for anyone who has questions.

We handed out blankets, a bag with personal care items, water and a hot sandwich, (kinda like a pizza pocket) to those going to the old Bellvue hospital shelter. Little did I know that the original Bellevue was closed down and a new one opened, but the old one has 1200 beds available for those in need. Truly a humbling experience. Tomorrow we go on Operation Drumstick where we will serve a hot Turkey dinner in several locations throughout the city. Can't wait!

With One Brick, you get your free sign up on their website (no spam ever) and you check the monthly calendar to RSVP to the events you're interested in. They cap off the number of volunteers according to how many are needed for each event. I appreciate this since I hate going to volunteer and standing around not contributing because there are too many cooks in the kitchen. My only qualm is that you can only sign up two weeks ahead of time for their events. I'd prefer to sign up for everything at the beginning of the month. But I assume they do this because it's rare for a NYCer to be able to commit more than two weeks out. Their method surely minimizes cancellations/no-shows. That being said, they're really awesome about understanding your need to cancel, even if it's last minute due to work or the unexpected. They also make it very easy for you to email the person in charge of your event in case you have questions or need to cancel.

I used the NICE worker center for a punch list of furniture removal and handy work around my apartment last week - I need to dismantle and remove a large wooden storage closet, mount a tv, hang several (heavy, glass) pieces and install/move shelving, move some items, etc. There were a variety of jobs, each of which was completed professionally, quickly, and with real care for the quality of the results. Two workers came and negotiated a very fair price (so "fair" that I actually upped their compensation by the end of the day) and they committed to the entire list, which they finished despite unforeseen challenges with hardware, equipment, and really difficult installation spaces in my apartment. They had tools and were really creative about finding workarounds where necessary. My apartment is also in an old, slanted building on a high floor (walk up) and they took a ton of time to make sure that everything was both level and attractive. The two men (Miguel and Edgar) were really wonderful - I think Miguel can fix/make/install anything. They took obvious pride in heir work but also offered me a lot of comfort that a job was being well done - even better than I had expected. They were prompt, consummate professionals, and incredibly helpful. And they worked really hard, completing the entire agreed list even though it took far longer than any of us expected. Awesome night for Charity!…read more I've lived in Queens for a majority of my life and never knew about this event that's been going on for 26 years. Maybe it wasn't always as grand in the past but this was a pretty nice turnout for a chilly and rainy Tuesday night. There were lots of food, an awards presentation for chef of the year, gaming tables and many interesting items up for auction all for charity, all of which went off without a hitch, at least from my perspective. There was a little of everything as far as the food was concerned, Italian, Indian, Chinese, Ethiopian, Filipino, American, Thai, etc,.... Gluten free options for dessert were also in the house! The range of options was incredible and better yet, all the restaurant servers were great. I personally liked that rich Italian Bolognese, the Indian Samosas/desserts, and that fantastic bite sized Mango Panna Cotta. I honestly couldn't have taken another bite for the evening. After I was done eating, I went over to the gambling tables and perused the many charitable items up for silent auction. There were a couple of things I was interested in including the autographed sport memorabilia. I even ended up winning a Carmine's restaurant branded basket with a gift card, pasta, and sauces which was pretty cool! Shout out to Queens Center for Progress (QCP) for a fantastic evening. The overall mood for the night was so festive. Specials thanks to Shaun Caruana for my tickets and for holding my Carmine's basket for me! Thanks to our Yelp CM Sam for organizing this event for Yelpers. This is one of the few times where doing something good for the community and having a good time intersect. I didn't know what to expect, but loved the cause as I am an occupational therapist and this population is near and dear to my heart. It was a very rainy night, but thankfully my husband and I drove. Check-in was pretty smooth and we got upstairs and entered a grand room with 2 sub-level sides and a large opening in the center for all the auction tables. Tables to sit and eat were on the sub levels and the food rounded the edges. There was a casino section where you could play black Jack and roulette to win tickets for a raffle. They had a photo booth and tons of generous vendors. Tables were labeled and Yelp had a few small round tables that we ended up sharing with some other Yelpers :) There was so much that we didn't get to try everything, but I was happy to see Glaze Donuts, which are so yum, and enjoyed the chocolates and so much more! Didn't end up having enough time to look around at the auctions, but hope they raised a lot of money! We enjoyed ourselves and had a nice time. Would love to experience this again! The staff are a wonderful group. Always very helpful and generous. GLWD goes above and beyond since they started during the AIDS epidemic in 1985.
