After my first 30 mins on the horse, I have fallen in love with the riding. Decided to take regular classes right after, and now I am looking forward to my weekly lesson and interaction with the horses!! In addition to public lessons, they provide therapeutic riding for those in needs as well. Plus, they are non profit making organization, the lesson fees are going to be used in somewhere meaningful. You can also buy certain supplies such as first aid kits and cpr kits here. You sign up for the classes online and you can pay by credit card. There are at least classes once a week. Parking is scarce so come early. Park by the Van Wyck highway, there are no meters there. If you don't, you are going to have to pay for parking. The classes "fly" by quickly.

I used the NICE worker center for a punch list of furniture removal and handy work around my apartment last week - I need to dismantle and remove a large wooden storage closet, mount a tv, hang several (heavy, glass) pieces and install/move shelving, move some items, etc. There were a variety of jobs, each of which was completed professionally, quickly, and with real care for the quality of the results. Two workers came and negotiated a very fair price (so "fair" that I actually upped their compensation by the end of the day) and they committed to the entire list, which they finished despite unforeseen challenges with hardware, equipment, and really difficult installation spaces in my apartment. They had tools and were really creative about finding workarounds where necessary. My apartment is also in an old, slanted building on a high floor (walk up) and they took a ton of time to make sure that everything was both level and attractive. The two men (Miguel and Edgar) were really wonderful - I think Miguel can fix/make/install anything. They took obvious pride in heir work but also offered me a lot of comfort that a job was being well done - even better than I had expected. They were prompt, consummate professionals, and incredibly helpful. And they worked really hard, completing the entire agreed list even though it took far longer than any of us expected. I've made attempts to donate furniture and the truck didn't show up. I give my donations to Goodwill and Housing Works now. The Christmas Salvation Army employees are very cute and friendly. I saw the sign from the sidewalk and walked down the alley to the center's entrance and climbed down its steps. As I entered, I felt like I was walking to a great secret space in New York City. And I did. :-) I found the space to be great for this event and the many programs they do. The space seems to be like 600-700 square feet. There's a large main room, a few office spaces, and a restroom. The space was super clean, and everything seemed new, even the doors and paint (the strange things that a New Yorker notices). During the event, I met the board members and some of the staff. I found them to be approachable and super friendly. They told me about their various programs. They offer tutoring and SAT help, community advocacy.

They are from my first meeting an outstanding organization that is trying to achieve great things for not only Latino and Africans, but overall low income people. They have definitely achieved a lot and seems like more things are just around the corner. When I entered it was kind of hectic due to their program called fifteen for fifteen. Which was a rally that they were going to do on April fifteen to raise the wage of commercial fast food chains workers to fifteen dollars. Hey if Chicago can do it why not here? Maybe overall as a whole nation? They had for the rally free food that they were bringing in so that they can box it to give out to the people coming. But that is not even the tip of the ice berg, one of the workforce personal I met even told me they do things such as try to fight to lower the medical bills of their members if it is that bad. They are really doing all they can to help immigrants do better here in the US. Now their building is pretty cool. It is bright and full of stuff. As soon as you enter you see good amounts of South American flags which adds a pop to the sign they have. You see cut out pages of Hispanic papers, that I am assuming shows headlines of something significant they did, on the walls that are framed. There rooms are not that big which is saying a lot because from what it looked like at least three co workers are in a room. The craziest thing is for all the different programs they have all the rooms are the same size. That is saying a lot for what they have accomplished with such minimal space. They had on some rooms adults learning English, or at least I an assuming that; while what looked like to me a little kids education center. They had a presentation room where I was sitting that was big and spacious. The place was chaotic but you expect nothing less from such a big organization.
