The Power of You Teens is unquestionably the latter. I have had the extraordinary privilege of knowing Felicia Gibson-Jaycox, the founder of this incredible organization, for over 25 years. Long before The Power of You Teens had a name, a mission statement, or a single program, I knew who Felicia was at her core: a woman with a heart for service, a gift for lifting others, and a vision for what was possible. I was there at her very first Empowerment Experience, watching something beautiful take root. To see what has grown from that seed is nothing short of miraculous. Felicia has always been a phenomenal human being, stunning inside and out, radiant in spirit, and relentless in her desire to give back. She left the world of television not because she lost her passion, but because she found a bigger one. And the girls who walk through the doors of The Power of You Teens are the living proof of what happens when purpose meets action. Now, more than two decades later, I am no longer just a witness to her mission. I am a grateful mother who enrolled her 11-year-old daughter in it. And I want to be clear: we travel from Long Island to attend these events. Every single time, it is worth every mile. My daughter and I have had the joy of attending multiple events, and each one has left a mark on both of our hearts. At the UNSTOPPABLE Vision Board Experience, hosted by the dynamic Déjà Vu, my daughter was completely in her element. The energy in that room was electric. Girls dreaming out loud, mapping their futures, being surrounded by powerful women who looked like them and who poured into them without reservation. My daughter didn't just make a vision board that day. She began to see herself differently. That is not a small thing. That is everything. At the Love Starts With Me Valentine's Day Self-Love Experience, the atmosphere was equally transformative: warm, joyful, affirming, and alive. Girls laughing. Girls connecting. Girls being seen, celebrated, and reminded of their worth. My daughter came home standing a little taller and speaking a little bolder. And I sat in that space as a mom feeling something I didn't even know I had been searching for: community. Here is something I carry with me as a mother. My daughter doesn't always see girls who look like her where we live. That matters more than people sometimes understand. Walking into a room full of beautiful Black and brown girls, girls who share her experiences, her heritage, her brilliance, watching her face open up with recognition and belonging is a gift I cannot put a price on. The Power of You Teens gives her that, every single time. This organization is doing the sacred, essential work of ensuring that girls of color are seen, supported, and prepared, not just to survive, but to thrive. To be confident, college bound, and career ready. To be the leaders this world is waiting for. They had a fantastic time building and making new friends. Ms. Felicia (the founder and organizer) and her team were welcoming and created a positive environment for the girls to interact, learn, and enjoy. I was in the hallway and overheard the girls singing, dancing, and engaging with one another. We took a tour to get familiar with the facility and what it has to offer to families. There are terraces to sit out and relax. The top floor has a spa and gym. Each floor has a garbage shoot and laundry machines (which have to be reserved). Family room with a library. And of course the lower lobby where the kitchen is and some play areas for the kids. Meals are generously donated and very tasty! I even saw some vegetarian options. The rooms have linens, towels, blankets. The families using the room have to clean it after wards. Supplies were provided in the bathroom and other supplies in the closet. Our stay was very comfortable and made our situation a little less stressful. Highly recommend staying at the RMH for families battling complex medical treatments for their children I'm looking forward to our next stay in a couple weeks.

We came to the Ronald McDonald House in October of 2007 and have been here off and on (mostly on) for the last 11 months now. It is available to kids that have cancer and their immediate family. Honestly, we're not sure what we would have done without it. Gone broke for one thing. There is no way we could afford to stay in Manhattan for this long if it wasn't for the $35/night Ronald McDonald House. Not only that, but they have fantastic corporate sponsors, so many nights there are free dinners put on by companies like JP Morgan, Bloomberg, NBA Cares, Ernst & Young, YES, and many many more. They also have many generous donations of local events like Mets tickets, Yankees tickets, Knicks tickets, the list goes on and on. Nearly every weekend in the summer the house takes a trip to somewhere fun like the beach, Hershey Park, Dorney Park, or even something as simple as Central Park. The Ronald McDonald House is 5 blocks from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and has a free shuttle to many of the neighborhood hospitals. It is basically like having a hotel room with the amenities of a living room downstairs on the first floor, a computer lab and MEGA playroom in the basement, and a kitchen and dining room area on the second floor. Each family has access to a stove, microwave, dishes, and a drawer in a fridge and freezer. Each room has 2 single beds, a queen sized pull out couch, a TV with a DVD/VCR player, dresser drawers, a phone, a vacuum cleaner, pillows and sheets, and a bathroom. Each floor has a washer and dryer as well. Each resident is responsible for keeping their rooms clean as there is no housekeeping service for the rooms. The biggest advantage, however, is making friends with other families going through the same thing you are and having that lifetime bond. We get to share our experiences and learn from each other. The kids become great buddies and have a great time playing with each other (when they feel up to it). If you are not a supporter of the Ronald McDonald House Charity, I'd urge you to consider it. If you live near 405 E 73rd Street in Manhattan and would love to give back to the community, please consider volunteering at the house. Every night different volunteers show up to help with dinners or to simply play with the kids and we love them all.

The shelter is home to people who are technically homeless. The people that reside here may have mental issues and have progress from living on the sides. The facility, staff and residents are very nice. It is safely controlled with a buzzer on the door and a person sitting at the door. Volunteers can come in and cook for the residents. I have done both the Saturday dinner and the Sunday brunch. When I've volunteered the Sunday brunch has had an amazingly fully menu, including sausage strata, banana walnut French Toast, pancakes, baked eggs, home fries, grits, bacon, coffee and tea, along with a couple additional selections. Volunteers are required to cook (while wearing mandatory gloves) and serve the food to the residents. Everything is completed with hygiene and safety to the residents and volunteers in mind. Of course there is some since of self gratification in coming here, but the best part about this self-indulgence is that volunteering here also helps other people. In doing something to make yourself feel good, you are still doing something for someone else.

I've known about the place since it was founded over 10 years ago by an acquaintance but after I saw a dead guy on the subway platform get brought back to life by a cop with narcan after an opioid overdose, I decided as a "community member" I wanted to be able to save the guys life myself next time I see an opiate OD. Training was quick, questions were answered, contacts were made, and I left with a kit that enables me to save a life.

As a clinical nursing instructor, I have arranged to tour the facility with my nursing students the past 3 semesters. The house itself is architecturally beautiful, having undergone a remarkable transformation a few years ago. Top designers and architects donated time, resources and expertise in creating a 5 star experience. Think lux hotel, an oasis for pediatric patients and their families who require hospitalization at one of the area hospitals. Common rooms themed to comfort children and provide diversion and relief from the impact that their illness has. Amenities for family members include a gym, meditation room, business center, tv and video game rooms and laundry. The themed bedrooms are beyond words. There are also outdoor patios and gardens. There are always volunteer groups home cooking meals and baking daily on premises to feed weary families. The aromas are intoxicating. Ronald McDonald House brings a sense of normalcy and belonging back to those affected by a child's illness.
