I am a nurse working at the Manhattan VA NY Harbor Health Hospital. We have been without personal protective equipment for weeks. On Friday, Veterans Rebuilding Life unexpectedly donated 150 medical face shields to my hospital and made sure that every single worker that was present, including our sanitation staff, received a shield. When we asked about the staff that were not present, VRL volunteers said that they would bring us more PPE the following week until every frontline worker was supplied. When we asked about the cost, they told us that the shields were free. I cannot tell you how much this donation meant to me and my team. Grateful does not even begin to cover it. We are happy to serve our city, but the constant fear of bringing the virus home to our families is overwhelming. These face shields are keeping me and my family safe. As the proud granddaughter of a Vietnam Vet, I'm no stranger to the needs of America's veterans. I'm also no stranger to how little has changed with unemployment, homelessness and suicide rates among vets. That's what brought me to volunteer with: Veterans Rebuilding Life (VRL). Open 24/7, VRL volunteers assist vets around the clock. Every member has made personal sacrifices to ensure each mission is accomplished. I've known the VRL founders before they even started the non-profit. They ran humanitarian missions to help children in combat zones they once served in and I was the person on the ground in Iraq seeing first hand the impact of their generosity. From the first day I spoke with the representative I felt heard and understood. more importantly I felt like I wasn't being judge for needing some help in the first place and I think that is important for a veterans as we can be prideful sometimes to our detrimen. Veterans Rebuilding life heard me out, helped me feel sure of myself going to school, and made it easy to get the ball rolling again as far as my VA claims go. I spent this veterans day volunteering with an amazing group of vets, first responders, pastors, and students. Together, we helped war refugees move into a their new home. This rewarding experience reminded me that there are still good people out there, doing good work. read more
