The instructor did a great job teaching techniques that actually feel usable while also introducing the basics of Krav Maga in a clear, straightforward way. I now take a Krav Maga class here each week and have had a great experience. I came in with no prior martial arts experience, in decent shape but not an athlete, and felt completely comfortable even as someone starting this later in life. The instructors meet you at your level and encourage you to have fun, which makes it easy to keep improving without feeling out of place. The space is clean, well run, and it's in a great location.

I took the 6:45 pm adult class 1-2 per week for a few months. They do offer other classes though like Dirty Boxing and youth classes if you're interested in that. As a pinay I hold so much value to this art. It's beautiful and takes a lot of skill. So give it a try and give yourself some grace if it doesn't come naturally at first. If you could bring a friend with you, that would be super helpful, because a lot of the material requires combat with another person. We learned how to start defending ourselves, disarm and disorient an attacker, throw a well-placed kick (if necessary!), and even mastered the 8-elbow method of defense--which sounds like a dance move but is decidedly not. We also got a quick intro on what to do if faced with a gun or knife (hint: don't stick around). Huge thanks to everyone who came out and supported this powerful and empowering afternoon. We started off at our local USSD dojo location in San Anselmo, which closed shortly after the start of the pandemic, and it led us to the SF location. I've seen my son grow confident, dedicated, and disciplined, by being a part of USSD. USSD SF has adapted to the pandemic by offering a combination of zoom classes and in-person classes, which works for us, since my son attends class virtually during the week, and goes in-person on Saturdays. A testament to Sensei and the bond between the team is seeing students grow up, go off the college, and come back to visit on school breaks. USSD SF also offers additional activities, such as ninja nights, summer camps, and competitions in southern CA. The location on Fillmore offers plenty for parents to do while kids are in class - there are a variety of eateries and shops within walking distance, and Japantown is only a couple of blocks away. Parking is metered right in front of the dojo, though you can drive a block or two to try to find non-metered parking.

My hope is she will never need to leverage the techniques John taught her, but now she has the tools to defend herself if/when necessary. John's approach is very effective. He brings the right tools to train on self-defense and understands how to communicate to the student - including providing relevant stories and examples to make it relatable. Every young woman should go through a course like this: - Situational awareness: How to avoid being in a bad situation (when you are alone, when you are with a male 'friend' who has different intentions, or when you are with friends at 'gatherings' with 'beverages'). - Self-defense: How to defend yourself from an 'friendly' who is aggressive or a true aggressor (how to get out of 'uncomfortable' situations, how to get out of common physical 'holds', and how to fight back).
