Wednesday No Gi Jiu Jitsu class

Been training with Stefan and crew for a couple of months now, in the adult jiu jitsu classes. After my first class I knew I was signing up for the long haul. People are incredibly supportive, skilled, welcoming, and know how to leave their egos at the door. Plus, everyone genuinely likes each other and goes out of their way to get to know newcomers. It's an awesome community. As a woman I've never felt sidelined when it comes to finding partners to practice or roll with. Best of all, there's a good sized (and growing) crew of women students and a women's class on Saturdays. Girl power is real! I love that the membership gives me access to all the Skrap Pack classes - thinking of checking out Boxing or Muay Thai next

Bay Jiu Jitsu is, by far, the best jiu jitsu gym I've ever trained at. I learned more in the nine…read moremonths I spent with them than I had in the previous five years, training elsewhere. They've ruined other gyms for me. Since leaving SF, I've traveled around CA, but haven't been able to find any gyms of a similar quality. Bay Jiu Jitsu is a special community with a level of elite instruction that's genuinely hard to find elsewhere, especially one that's welcoming literally to anyone, beginner or otherwise. Very few BJJ gyms offer any instruction in takedowns-be it wrestling or judo. A huge amount of gyms train nearly entirely on their butts or from their knees. Every instructor at Bay knows high-level takedowns and defense. We all grapple standing and are training takedowns constantly. The instructors here are incredible. All of them compete and their records in tournaments, to my knowledge, is excellent. Bay Jiu Jitsu is also the only gym I've ever trained at that constantly surveys the class for questions. Unlike the general, "Any questions?" at the end of a complex technique, they literally go around the room asking "what questions do you have?" It's such a simple thing, but very indicative that the gym is just operating at a much different level. The instructors actually help you to improve your game and learn the sport. You're not just mindlessly doing moves out of context that you may never use. Here, we work techniques and positions, and map out how to see them, what successful principles for passing open guard are, for example. So, you're constantly learning in a deeper and more meaningful way. Rather than an individual technique, you're learning how to think for yourself, how to figure out large-scale, applicable, perspectives/rules to operate under when faced with fundamental positions of the sport. All the instructors are talented and can actually teach. When they break down ankle locks, it's not just showing you one version of the submission three times and having everybody go and drill it incorrectly. The instructors will break things down, incrementally, and in-detail. Then we regularly attempt it with coaches going around the room, making adjustments, and then doing additional demonstrations and instructions. I don't think they ever just go through the motions with moves here. Everything we do has a point or reason to it. Bay Jiu Jitsu is the only gym I've been to (and this is dope) but it's the only gym where instructors ask individuals from the class, what do you want to work on? What's something you're struggling with or curious about? And we'll actually do it. Instructors here give a damn about you as a person. They track your success, watch you during sparring, and hold you accountable to reach your potential with feedback, advice, and encouragement. They have no uniform requirement. You're not forced to buy a gym rash guard or spend hundreds of dollars on their gis. They don't charge you for promotions. They teach you how to actually train smart. So many gyms don't do this and it's ridiculous, but here, they teach you how to avoid preventable knee injuries during takedowns/positions, how to fall correctly, etc. When there's sparring, there's pretty much always a person walking around, keeping individuals from falling into a teammate-blowing out their ACL or kicking them in the head needlessly. I could ramble on for ages about the gym. You'll train with loads of rad, high-level people here. Nobody has an ego. We're all willing to help out. You don't deal with people cranking your jaw to get a submission. Everybody's cool and will train hard, at times, but in a safe way. The gym does movie nights, goes out to bars, goes dancing, and has bonfires throughout the year too. If you're looking for it, you can make friends. I love the gym and the people here. If you have the chance to train at Bay Jiu Jitsu, you absolutely must.

Clear visuals about what the different positions are 2. Moves that are outlined - you try the move, and then repeat it over and over again in speed/resistance 3. Then you have the opportunity to try it in sparring, which lets you really remember it! Definitely recommend and will be back - folks were super nice and welcoming!

I found the classes challenging to navigate as someone newer to martial arts, and I personally did not feel that I received the level of attention and care I was looking for as a new student. Based on what I experienced during those classes, I felt more time, instruction and feedback was directed toward more experienced members of the studio. At other studios, I personally felt more immediately noticed, supported and positively reinforced in my progress and attendance. I gave the studio a few tries before forming an opinion and ultimately decided that Studio 86 was not a good fit for me. Note The business owner has referenced legal matters in their responses. I disagree with their characterization of those events, and it does not accurately reflect my experience or the documentation I have. These interactions occurred with him only (no students or instructors) after I declined to change or remove my review, which was not a 5-star review.

He has proven to be one of the best Muay Thai trainers in the world. Over the last 25 years, he has developed multiple world champions and helped launch the careers of some of San Francisco's top Muay Thai and MMA fighters. His teaching is clear, technical, and patient. He gives the same attention to new students as he does to seasoned fighters. He also hosts fight events, giving his students real opportunities to compete. This gym has a strong and supportive community. Everyone trains hard and looks out for one another. Kru Sam is actually from Thailand and knows the traditions of the art and still goes back himself or sends students there regularly to train, which may be part of why he's trained so many champions. TL:DR - You will not find a better, more professional, form, safety, and progression-focused…read moretrainer than Windell of Blue Ocean Muay Thai SF. BOOK A SESSION ASAP! I had wanted to start learning Muay Thai since I got a taste with a beginner's training session in Thailand 14 years ago. I tried it out here in San Francisco with another all-around personal trainer 10 years ago, but their knowledge of the sport was basic and the fear of injury was immediate. As a chef, my hands are my livelihood and I cannot risk putting them (or my wrists) in jeopardy, so that line of training with that person came to a swift end. In contrast, from my very first session with Windell, I learned to wrap my hands properly, what the correct alignment of my wrists and hands feels and looks like, and how to punch without jarring fingers, knuckles, and wrists. IT WAS A COMPLETE GAME CHANGER and within ONE session, any trace of that initial fear was GONE! It's now been a couple of years working together - I booked sessions sporadically at first and have moved up to a couple of sessions each week, learning new things every time and getting a helluva workout in the process! I used to not be able to imagine EVER getting into a ring, and now I WANT to. Still in serious learning phase and getting more out of every single training session, both physically and mentally. It's like learning a new language, exercising body and brain, and Windell is expert at tailoring the sessions to your own personal progression. Unexpected bonuses - some of the mentality behind the techniques translates right over into my professional life, giving me perspective on how to approach business situations and teaching me how to think about when is the right time to "slip" (avoid confrontation), block (stand my ground), or be the aggressor (going after what I want with persistence and clarity of purpose). AND, I feel safer and stronger moving through the world in general. Plus, as is mentioned in more of these reviews - Windell is an awesome person! He's fun to work with, chat with, is always encouraging, and patient. A total pro and a pleasure to be around. I can't recommend Blue Ocean Muay Thai training enough - though I totally don't want you to take my favorite time slots! If I could give more than 5 stars, I would - and I'm looking forward to keeping up my practice!
