Propert manager is respectful, maintenance man is respectful, everything else is awful. We were told the pool & hot tub would be resurfaced, 6+ months later the project isn't even close to done and they are both drained. Laundry machines regularly break, clothes are stolen. Packages are routinely stolen, management has 0 answer to that. Cars stolen out of the garage, 0 answer for that. Garage door has been broken SEVERAL times. Don't move here. read more

We moved into Bay on 6th (then called Pacific Ocean apartments) in March 2020. My rating for the building would be 2 stars, but after the absolute hell the building management put my husband and I through, I would give them 0 stars if I could. If ever there was an emergency (flood, fire, etc), I would strongly warn against relying on Decron to follow through with their ethical and legal obligations to protect and respect their tenants. And make sure you have renter's insurance because if anything happens, you are on your own. I'll start with general notes about the building and then tell you about the complete nightmare that was the flood. The pros to the building are that it's a few short blocks to the beach and Main Street, has covered parking, and it's rent-controlled. That is about it. The first thing we noticed after moving into the building are some of the security issues. A week after moving in, my husband's bike was stolen from the gated garage (we filed a police report). Our new neighbor had her expensive bike stolen from the garage shortly after moving in as well. A month after moving in, every single package was stolen from the front mail area. I also was threatened in the laundry room by angry anti-maskers because I kindly asked them to wait for me to finish loading the machine before they started loading the machine next to it - thankfully another neighbor was witness to it and intervened on my behalf because I was too shocked to respond! I reported it to management but they said there was nothing they could do. There are also sketchy characters hanging out in the neighborhood, including a man who likes to smoke meth by the front door. (Yelp wouldn't let me upload the picture but YIKES) Finally, not exactly a security issue but definitely a safety issue - the elevators are sketchy, the doors either take forever to close or slam closed, they jerk as they come to a stop, and are regularly out of order. There are also cosmetic and cleanliness issues. The carpets are horribly stained with who knows what (see pictures). The pool sits under the hotel and constantly traps all the stuff that guests throw off the balcony - we've seen fast food, pants, cups, general trash, in the pool the morning after guests were staying there. There is dog urine everywhere. The laundry machines are gross, smell like mold, and are constantly breaking. And weirdly, there aren't apartment numbers on the doors (only on some, and the signs are weirdly mismatched?) so packages and food are constantly delivered to the wrong units. Now for the flood, which was a horrible defining moment in a year of horrible defining moments (the fact that this one was the most horrible should say something). In November 2020, my husband and I returned home from running errands to our ceiling pouring water. We were told by maintenance that the upstairs neighbor had left a sink running and it wasn't that bad, and then part of the ceiling peeled off and landed in front of the building manager, Joseph. We were initially told to plan for a week away from home. When the responses from Decron seemed to be inconsistent and dismissive, we pushed for more information on repairs and inspections - our concerns were brushed off by building manager Joseph, who told us that we should think of it "as a free staycation." In the middle of a raging pandemic, when my husband is high risk, staying at a high-traffic hotel is not a "staycation," it's a nightmare. Without getting into all the gory legal details, we eventually had to hire an attorney because they showed us that rather than protecting their tenants and ensuring a habitable environment by getting the proper tests inspections, they would rather try to push us around to cut costs. Don't be duped by the proximity to the beach. This is far from a beachside retreat - this company is looking out for one thing and one thing only, and that's themselves. read more

Honestly, the Manager of this apartment (Joe) and maintenance here are so great. We moved from NYC, and we had a couple of apartments to choose from but after talking to Joe (who is a chill, good guy) made us go with this apartment. He cares about the apartments and tries his best! As usual, there are issues with any apartments, but we've dealt with so many terrible NYC apartments, this was actually really a pleasant place. We've had an issue we were uncomfortable with (especially during this pandemic) and he addressed them and sent an email out to the whole apartment building. So they really care! Good people! Maintenance comes super quick and fixes things for you as soon as they can. Our Microwave door handle broke and they came in to give us a new microwave. I have to say maintenance here is pretty great. We also chose this place to the proximity to the beach. It's really close. So during summer we'd just walk down to the beach when parking was super full. It's nice. My husband would do his jogging down the beach easily. Apartments come with AC! Which is pretty rare I've noticed first coming to LA to look at apartments. Recommend!! read more

Been a while ... thought it time for an update. Same star rating (4.5 stars) and pretty much same review as before, but here's what's better, and also what I forgot to mention... BETTER: The building now has front-loading, high-efficiency washers! The heated pool, spa, and pool deck are working properly more than ever. Up and running 95% of the time. WHAT I FORGOT TO MENTION: The exterior windows and sliding-glass doors are old and thin, so noise from outside can be easily heard. This is somewhat annoying since there is a good bit of outside noise from the 3 adjacent roadway intersections, the garbage pick-up zone for the adjacent hotel (5-6 dumpsters, 6 days a week on Bay St), and because 6th St serves as the defacto drop-off zone for students at Santa Monica High. Decron also inflates the square footage of each apartment on the website. If you were to include the closets in your measurement (it's industry standard not to), the online measurements are inflated by roughly 10%. As a parting note ... a moment of silence for the vending machines that are no longer with us. read more

Here's to providing the most helpful review to any interested apartment hunters out there right now. My wife and I moved into our apartment back in June of 2015. They are beginning to renovate all of the older apartments with new laminate wood flooring, new countertops, new appliances, new cabinets, new toilets, new carpets, etc. For the price and the area, these units are tough to beat. They make good use of the space with the open kitchen, making a relatively low square footage feel much larger. In terms of maintenance, we have not had many issues with our unit whatsoever. We had a drain that was clogged our first week (likely due to construction), and that was resolved very quickly. Other than that, we have had no problems. The hot water has gone out maybe once or twice, but that was the worst of our experience. They're also renovating the hallways and should be replacing the elevators soon. The elevators have gone down every once in a while, but unless you physically can't do so, it's not the worst thing in the world to be healthy and take the stairs. The cons deal with management and security. Management could definitely be a little bit more responsive, as phone calls have gone unanswered on a few occasions. They could definitely use security cameras. Of course, like any other big city, there have been bikes stolen as well. This is to be expected if you don't be mindful of the fact that it is an extremely common crime. The key is buying a good lock and if you have a bike that's very expensive, bring it to your apartment. Don't leave expensive things in your car. The usual common sense stuff, and you shouldn't have any problems. Cannot beat the location whatsoever. Right down the street from the beach. Easy walking distance from Main Street and 3rd Street Promenade. All around, it's a great area. The pool and hot tub are a nice bonus. It may have been different before, but both of these areas haven't been down much for us at all since we've moved in. We've often made quite good use of the hot tub. All in all, it's a very solid place to live, especially given the price and amenities in the Santa Monica area. There are some areas that could use some improvements, but the complex is definitely trending in a very positive direction. This makes rent control very useful! read more

Time for an updated review, having lived here ~5 years now... The current Community Management team, led by Kathy, is top notch. They have recently renovated/upgraded many parts of the building, and our community has never been more professionally managed. To name a few of the pros: +Best location in Santa Monica (proximity to beach, but with a quiet, neighborhood feel) +Responsive, friendly and professional staff +Junior Olympic heated pool (largest apartment pool I've seen in LA) +Hot Tub +Covered Parking, Generously-sized spots +Friendly neighbors The building is ~45 years old, so there are occasional issues that come with the age, but the management team quickly handles these. read more

I've lived here almost 3 years now. A few issues. Car was broken into in garage, and had a bunch of packages stolen, but these issues were before new manager and maintenance team was here. I haven't had any issues since about January 2016. I just had my microwave break on me, and my oven wasn't heating to the correct temperature, so David just came and replaced microwave with a brand new one, and replaced the thermostat in my oven. Plus, I had some packages that were delivered today, and David was nice enough to bring them inside so they weren't just sitting in the hallway! Thank you! Maintenance has been great, sometimes they turn the water off to replace plumbing,but that is to be expected in an older building, and they always give plenty of notice. Elevator does go down sometimes, but not a big deal unless it's the main elevator, and you need to do laundry. It's the only way to get to laundry room that I know of, except going though valet at the hotel next door. I just wish there were cameras in the garage and hallways for more security. It's nice to have A/C and also having utilities included in rent is a big plus. read more

I've lived here for four years and i absolutely love it. The apartment building has really improved since Melanie and Lito came on board. Issues are handled in a reasonable amount of time and with care. I had a difficult situation and they were on it. Overall the quality of life in the building has gone up due to Melanie's hard work. We live here since June 2018, and we like it very much. Residential building is really very good and comfortable. The heated pool and the pool work fine. All repair problems in the apartment are solved quickly and efficiently. Kathy Farrell Community Managers Pacific Ocean and Peter service manager are the best managers in our house. I have lived here for several years now and love this location in Santa Monica. Its easy to get around from this property with the 10 freeway, downtown Santa Monica, and the beach about the same distance. Its the perfect place to bike / walk everywhere instead of driving. Plenty of great dining in the area with lots of food delivery services. The property has been renovated over the last couple of years to provide a better quality of life for its residents. The staff that operates this facility is very friendly and keeps it looking great! read more

I am modifying my review bc it seems like new rules are being added with fewer benefits for tenants. Recently management apparently has decided to not have office hours on Fridays and Saturdays, but tenants received no notice about this. We also had an apartment inspection this year with a notice claiming that we were having our "annual inspection." I have lived here since 1996, and this is the first inspection we have ever had. I believe they had a right to inspect but I don't like BS erroneous proclamations. Management is still responsive re: repairs but but I don't understand all the new rules. nevertheless Pacific Ocean apartments offer a location that can't be beat. We are six blocks from the beach and five blocks from Main Street. Although I enjoy the new foodie haunts at Santa Monica Place, also within walking distance, my favorite eateries are on Main Street: Stella Barra Pizza & Wine Bar, M Street Kitchen (American cuisine) and Dhaba (fabulous Indian food). Covered parking is also a precious commodity in Santa Monica, and a space goes with each apartment (I think). read more

I've lived here for 18 months and so far so good. The building is a bit old, but they are always trying to find ways to update it. Lisa takes good care of me and the staff is pretty quick with work orders. The negative comments don't really make sense. If you want to live next to the beach, and not want to pay an arm and a leg, you need to be able to roll with the small things. I'd recommend this place to my friends. read more

I've only lived here a few months, but I was so impressed with how fast that work orders are handled that I figured I'd post a note. Twice I had some small thing need fixing (shower door, toilet handle)-- I sent an email to Lisa, and both times I got home from work that same day to find out it had been fixed. Super-efficient. Best part about living here besides the incredible location and lovely tub/pool is the maintenance guy Lito. He is always happy, smiling, and whenever I put in a work request it is taken care of promptly and doesn't make a huge mess in my apartment.
