Our girls are 3rd graders, a mix of 8 and 9 years old, and I feel like we are now so prepared to face puberty with confidence and curiosity. Everything the kids are learning is supported by science, with a framework of empowerment and autonomy. Both kids and moms felt encourage to ask questions and were met with enthusiasm and great insight from Ms. Rey. This workshop was worth every penny and then some. You also can't beat the location. Not only is Ms. Rey's treehouse itself a breathtaking, almost magical-feeling location, but the neighborhood is awesome, too! I grabbed lunch with my daughter before the workshop, and then during the kids-only section, the moms and I took a long walk in the nearby canyon and then grabbed coffee before coming back for the mom/daughter tea party and learning session. Our girls were all so proud to show off their crafts and what they'd learned, and I feel like all the moms learned something, too. It was also a fantastic bonding experience and made our community feel stronger, safer, and more loving for both us and our girls. Ms. Rey does period workshops for dads, too! We were really fortunate to find our birth doula (who we love!), but the other 2 candidates were not very impressive. The first doula missed our appointment with no follow-up communication. We were initially confused and thought she was the coordinator for BB, because she only communicated by text. The actual meeting was just by telephone so there was no face-to-face interaction, which felt strange. We could've easily FaceTimed or Zoomed. So communication and reliability were not great. The second doula abruptly canceled our half-hour appointment when we were 10 minutes late for a 30-minute appointment due to my husband wrapping up a Zoom meeting. During our appointment time, she was responding to my emails (in which I apologized for being late), but insisted she could no longer meet with us. I thought this was a really bad sign about what she would be like to work with - labor and delivery is rarely precisely timed and some flexibility is needed. In addition, her email said that she lives in Portola Valley, but we live Berkeley (also where Brilliant Births is located). This also struck me as strange, because it would take 1.5 hours for her to arrive to meet us at the hospital, which is not ideal.

When my son was born, I had a lot of issues with breastfeeding, including sore/cracked nipples, low milk supply (such that we had to supplement with formula), etc etc. We didn't find the nurses at Kaiser to be all that helpful and some of them even tried to tell us that "this is just how it is at the beginning." So I really thought that I just needed to buck up and power through the pain or stop breastfeeding altogether. I remember talking to my doula about this and on her recommendation, we decided to check out the group lactation clinic that Farrell Topham and Katie Howser offered at Community Well on Tuesday mornings before giving up on nursing. These two ladies changed our lives!! My son and I (and even my husband) literally became regulars at their clinic for our first few weeks postpartum. Farrell and Katie helped me troubleshoot every breastfeeding issue I had and they were able to solve every single one of them. They taught me alternate nursing positions for different situations, how to use a pump properly (that was apparently the cause of my bruised nipple and not my son!), etc etc. I'm SO proud to say that all thanks to them, my son and I are now a happy breastfeeding pair!! And even now, I still go back to the clinic every once in a while when I run into a question, such as when my son decided to stage a "bottle boycott" a few weeks ago and when I needed their advice on how to prepare for going back to work. Or when I just need a sanity check about how many ounces my son is actually drinking during a nursing session or whether he's still gaining weight, because they always have their high-resolution scale with them at the clinic. In addition to breastfeeding help, Farrell and Katie also taught us a bunch more stuff about being new parents. Farrell showed us how to use a Moby, a ring sling, and an Ergo properly and now, we LOVE wearing our baby! They also gave us lots of advice about our upcoming international trip with our three-month-old (eeek!). Thank you Farrell and Katie!!! And thank you Community Well for offering such great programs in the heart of Excelsior!!

Some of the classes they offer include lactation clinics, holistic life coaching, infant massage, prenatal and postnatal yoga and fitness classes and many more. I think there is a class for everyone in the family. This is such a wonderful addition to this neighborhood. The place is beautifully decorated and is inviting. Once you come through the doors, you feel like you are in someone's home. The practitioners are all knowledgable and experienced in their fields. I would recommend this place in a heartbeat.

Doulas through this company are employees (not independent providers) and they stress that this is really good for always having a backup. We were then matched with 2 doula candidates and the scheduling process was easy and professional. However, we ultimately felt that these candidates were not properly trained or vetted. We never received any materials such as CVs for the doulas. The first doula said right away that she had never been a birth doula before and we would be her first birth. Her only experience was that she had been a night doula before. I was shocked that she had never even shadowed another birth doula as part of her training as a company employee. Bless her heart for being honest, but I did not want to pay to be her guinea pig. After this, I requested an additional candidate, but I was told the other one should be great. The second doula was also not a good fit. She kept emphasizing that at previous births hospital staff did not believe she was a birth doula (and thought she was just a family friend). It became clear why. I asked about her qualifications and she said she's working on her bachelor's degree even though she already has a master's degree. I thought this was strange and asked some follow up questions and ultimately could not determine what degree she had (maybe an associate's degree) or didn't have (definitely did not already have a master's). I also asked some basic medical questions about pain control and epidurals and she was not able to answer them. Ultimately we were able to find a wonderful birth doula through another matching company - experienced and with a real master's degree (in public health).

Although the first location on Paris was a second home for me, visiting their Ocean location still managed to give me comfortable, welcoming vibes and that's mainly because the staff and teachers are still as kind and excited about music education as they were back when I was a student! No matter when I drop in, I can trust that there is going to be a credible, talented teacher giving feedback to their student's family. From all the times I've visited, I've never seen a student walk out of their lesson unhappy. Students, most of the time, give their teacher a cheery goodbye and it feels like the school has only improved from when I was also a Vibo Music student. My sibling used to take lessons at Vibo but recently stopped to pursue other hobbies. During their time at Vibo, they improved so, so, so much and even used the skills they acquired to self-learn songs they were interested in. While I would wait for them during their lessons, I would also hear other students practicing during their lessons, and because I was there once a week, I heard other students improve as well. It's just an amazing feeling knowing that Vibo is always encouraging musical growth and exploration. If you have younger children who show interest in learning about music, Vibo Music's teachers truly excel in working with not only young children, but people of all ages, backgrounds, and interests. The teachers were also amazing partners for us as parents, helping us guide the kids through changes, transitions, and the normal ups and downs of family life. Communication was another thing we really appreciated. Between Brightwheel updates, photos, messages, and seeing the teachers every day at drop-off and pick-up, we always felt connected and supported. It truly felt like we had partners helping us through some of the most important years of our kids' lives. SOMA set the bar so high that when our older son started kindergarten, it was a real adjustment. No daily pictures? No regular drop-off and pick-up chats with teachers? No easy messaging? She often shares homemade snacks, dates or freshly baked sourdough loaves with the parents as well! She takes the children to their community garden every week to teach them about where their food comes from, how to tend to the plants and how to harvest and enjoy whatever is in season. Her eldest sons host and teach soccer every Friday afternoon. Their support and influence has had a remarkable impact on my son, who loves soccer and basketball and clearly looks up to the older boys and enjoys playing with them. It warms my heart to see Camden so well taken care of. Massiva and her husband Younes, provide such a warm and loving environment at their home. I trust them wholeheartedly and I honestly could not imagine what I would do without their holistic support. Upon arrival for my tour that was not the case... they took a $25 waitlist fee and the rates provided to me over email were not the rates provided to me upon my visit. Also when I did visit the facility the care takers or teachers looked as if there were in some sort of tension or disagreement. All in all it didn't seem like a peaceful environment I would want my child to be admitted to. Unfortunately building kids isn't for me and the can keep my $25 waitlist fee I guess.
