However, it turned out that Heidi was equitably wonderful and all things lovely-- instead of only one great instructor and guide, we ended up with two...which leads me to believe you'll be in skilled hands with anyone you interact with at BB. From our prenatal visits all the way through postpartum care, they created a level of trust, safety, and calm that allowed me to fully surrender to birth in a way I didn't know was possible. My two births were completely different... One intense and primal, the other calm and deeply present. Both were incredibly powerful and positive. Kara and Liz have this rare ability to read a room and support you exactly how you need in each moment. They know when to gently guide you, when to reassure you, and when to simply hold steady space. Their presence alone brings a sense of peace and confidence that makes you feel safe doing something so big. What stood out most to me is that they trust birth, they trust mothers, and they honor the process without rushing or controlling it. I felt respected, supported, and genuinely cared for every step of the way. And after each birth, I got to climb into my own bed with my baby, surrounded by calm instead of chaos... Something I will always treasure. If you're even thinking about home birth, I cannot recommend Kara and Liz enough. They are not just skilled and knowledgeable, they are intuitive, compassionate, and truly exceptional at what they do.

My husband and I grew closer and more aligned during the class and after, as we prepared to welcome our first child. The exercises she has you practice and the information she shares should be something every expecting couple goes through. Her audio tracks taught me what I needed and helped me before during and after birth. While Stork and Sprout does have some excellent doulas on its team who provided great support and coaching, my experience with the agency's leadership was overwhelmingly negative. We had a particularly difficult time with Brittany. She demonstrated a pattern of manipulation, gaslighting, and lying, both to us and, from what I understand, to her own employees. Our contract promised consistent coverage, but the scheduling was erratic and communication was poor. We were left to wonder many nights if we would have support, and for several weeks, we only received 1 to 2 days of support instead of the 6 to 7 we paid for. When we requested a refund for the services not provided, Brittany refused and even fought our bank with out-of-context emails and more lies. She claims she "offered a refund" but is even today refusing to honor it as she says in the response. The lack of professionalism extended to some of the staff as well; one sick doula was sent to our home and intentionally caused our newborn physical pain. Brittany treated us like we were the difficult ones and responded with empathy-less chatGPT emails to manage the situation. We were also led to believe we would have one primary doula with a backup, but over the course of our service, we had seven different doulas come to our home. This complete lack of continuity made an already difficult period even more stressful. Based on my experience, I would advise new parents to skip Stork and Sprout and work directly with an independent doula. You will not only save the 30-40% extra fee the agency charges for scheduling, but you will also avoid the toxic and difficult management. This experience is unacceptable for a service that costs tens of thousands of dollars and demands payment upfront months ahead of providing the service. We were not able to switch easily due to the inflexible Carrot reimbursement process through the employer.

Going into the process there is so much unknown and so much that makes you unsure. The most important person to be comfortable in my situation was my wife. In order for her to be comfortable it was very important for me to be comfortable. I understand that having a doula is not necessary, but it sure did help me and my family. The preparation conversations we had made the experience digestible. The advocate we had in Michelle during the process was incredible. The support we had post-partum was so helpful. Michelle has done this so many times and is so familiar with everything going on. To have her on your team allows for everyone to be present and just helps so much. Technically: She knows her stuff. For instance, Michelle is trained in baby spinning and to the doctor's surprise we avoided a c-section at the final hour. It was nothing short of a miracle. Personally: Michelle is solid, levelheaded, caring, fun, patient, prepared and will advocate for you when you need it. She has a short questionnaire to get on the same page earlier on in the process and she stands by what you discuss. I can't recommend Michelle enough, and if you would like to discuss further please ask Michelle to put us in touch.

Her knowledge and experience shined through during our labor experience. During both labors, she knew exactly what positions to put me into to progress my labor along. I had planned for an unmedicated natural birth, which was what we ended up having for both births all thanks to Michelle. Michelle was always focused on getting baby in an optimal position by making me stay active during each contraction. I felt her full presence and support through each contraction, which put me at ease and made me feel like I was fully capable of getting through it. Michelle goes the extra mile to support her clients in every way possible. When I had a question, she was quick to respond and made herself available for a phone call to lend an ear and provide information to help me make a decision without any judgment. When our second baby was borderline jaundice, she went out of her way and drove to our house on a rainy evening to assist with breastfeeding issues we had, which helped to get my milk supply up and allowed our 3-day old newborn to sleep 3-4 hour stretches during the night - a miracle! Because of Michelle's guidance, our baby was back to her birth weight within a week and no longer had jaundice. Michelle is not just our birth doula, but a lifelong resource and support for new parents going through the trenches of parenthood. Her wisdom and encouragement provided me with the confidence to make my dream birth a reality and become the mama I envisioned myself to be. If you have an opportunity to work with Michelle in any capacity, I would not hesitate to jump on it!

What should I do.

Both my children have favorable memories of CAT. They felt safe; physical confrontations &…read morerivalries at other public schools seem non-existent at CAT. Talented teachers have a passion for their work. The administration staff is professional & approachable. Day One for Freshmen is closed to other returning students, a considerate way to help these kids transition to high school. In 2008, when my older son first attended, the school had an 'alternative' vibe, emphasizing project collaboration & individual presentation skills. Now in college, my son, compared to students from other schools, has a more developed ability to present ideas to a group of people. He attributes it to CAT nurturing and exercising those skills. Internships give junior & senior classes work experience in retail, government & non-profits. Students are responsible for locating & accessing these opportunities. My children took pride in their accomplishments as interns. Being treated as peers in an adult world contributed to their growth as young adults. My younger son feels that the school's cutting edge diminished over time, as CAT became more like a traditional high school. For eight years, I was happy with the school. Our last day, my younger son's graduation day, was a disappointment because of one teacher who had been fired. The reason behind his dismissal was the bizarre behavior exhibited in his classroom. According to one student who provided evidence: -In class he advocated separation of races, teaching that interracial marriage was wrong. -He taught that gays hire African American males in order to emasculate them. -In a Facebook post, he endorsed violence against women, claiming that Ray Rice "did nothing wrong" in beating his girlfriend, an incident captured on video. -He used class time to present positive views of violence against children as a teaching method, recounting, in class, an incident in which he physically struck his own son because his son sang a song that the teacher considered "too white". The school, to their credit, got rid of him immediately after discovering the situation. Members of CAT's 2016 graduating class, however, when challenged by this seduction of racism, misogyny, & homophobia, failed that challenge. Students embraced the intolerance. Two students gave speeches at the graduation ceremony. Both those students paid tribute to this teacher, accompanied by the approving applause of their classmates. The school did go to great lengths, in curriculum, to expose the historical damage done by racism, misogyny & homophobia. I don't fault the school for students' failure to absorb the importance & complexity of the lessons. Does fault lie at the feet of their parents? With the students themselves? I'm torn. The students are good kids. Why would they honor a man who spewed hatred & bragged about cruelly beating his own son because that child did not share the teacher's hatred of other races? His obsessive vilification recalls the Iranian religious clerics' crackdown on Pharrell's song 'Happy' in 2014. I wonder how many of these students will go on to emulate their chosen role model, and beat their own children while feeling justified in doing so, despite the documented psychological damage those beatings cause in children. Years ago, a news report on Egypt included 6-year olds at an anti-Mubarek demonstration. The children shouted and waved signs, wholeheartedly chanting "Mubarak must go". But realistically, the children were too young to understand the meaning behind their actions. Obviously, adults had fed opinions to the children, who exhibited heartfelt enthusiasm geared more toward pleasing the adults who prepped them, rather than any intellectual objection those 6-year olds had with Mubarak's policies. Does it take more than 18 years for children to begin to think critically, rather than parroting the opinions of manipulative adults? Recently, observing an interracial couple on the street, I couldn't help but notice the loving manner in which they regarded each other. I thought about the arrogance of CAT's teacher, a man who had burned through two failed marriages, yet considered himself fit to judge the marriages of interracial couples as wrong, and taught this nonsense in class. I thought about students in his class who happened to be children of interracial marriages, and the message the teacher thoughtlessly delivered to them, that their lives were the result of disparaged unions. Yet members of CAT's class of 2016 held the teacher in great regard, spoke highly of him at graduation and referred to him as a role model. They gave little, if any, thought to fellow students who were children of interracial parents. I'm reminded of what Philip Zimbardo said in 1971: "We all want to believe in our inner power, our sense of personal agency to resist powerful situational forces. For many, that belief is little more than a reassuring illusion of invulnerability."
