I have not used this company, but while I was looking for a gate company to give me estimates to compare, I called 'Bay Area Automatic Gates'. We made an appointment. The estimator called me on the way and left a message to call him back. . When I tried to return the call, he didn't answer, so I asked who I was speaking to. The woman didn't give her name but said, "This is The Gate Company" I said I was trying to find Bay Area Automatic Gates and could she connect me with the estimator. She wouldn't do that. She wanted to verify that I had an appointment. But I said I was confused, that this company has a different name, that I was just returning a call, but the call didn't go through to the person who called me, and why did they need to verify who I was when I just hit "call back". This seems like very poor customer service, it's very confusing, and I don't know if it smells a little fishy to anyone but me (?). Who is 'The Gate Company' anyway? read more

I Don't know how many stars to give. - my gut says 2, but I Don't want to get a sad phone call, because honestly Nicolas confused me so much....I asked them to give a bid on a gate repair, all was good- though REALLY EXPENSIVE. After back & forth emails for over 2 weeks he (Nicolas) Owner? Finally admits they have no Workmanship Comp Insurance. Also, name on email and bid paperwork are completely different. I asked to speak direct with office regarding setting up paperwork - But it never happened. This company may be swell for residential. If you are commercial company- go with a bigger name....I am still looking for a great gate repair company. Next stop- Angles list! P.S. I was told there was no ability to provide a W-9 . We had some electrical and mechanical issues caused by a long power outage. When I called Bay Area Automatic Gates, they were very responsive. The other companies I called took more thank a day to respond, and then needed more time before coming to look at our gate. Dave from Bay Area Automatic Gates cane out the next day, determined what the problem was quickly, and gave us two options to move forward. He replaced our keypad and it is working perfectly now. Wow! I am thrilled with my new automatic gate! From start to finish, our project manager Raz was extremely responsive, professional, and knowledgeable. The team installed a 6' beautiful custom iron and wood combination automatic swing gate complete with solar panels! Our project timeline was a few weeks shorter than expected, which was so nice, and Raz kept me updated every step of the way. I could always reach him, and he was very prompt for our appointments. I wish I could give them negative rating. 2 guys showed up at our house for initial consultation. Analyzed things, left the control box in a mess, gave us ridiculous options all of which started in the $2,000 and above range. Unnecessarily tried to scare us for liability issues of scenarios that they were not able to justify. It was super silly to watch them fumble when they were giving their examples. Never once tried to listen to our real needs and use cases. On top of that at the end for all this nonsense charged us $195. Save some trouble for yourself and STAY AWAY from them. These guys have the "too big" to care for customer attitude. To top this experience and guarantee that they did not care about anything - The two guys came in a black Ford truck. I think it was the 450 full size. Which also means the truck is a gas guzzler. These 2 men kept the engine running the whole time they were doing the analysis. Why waste all that fuel and pollute the environment when you are not using your truck? Oh perhaps the Boss is paying for gas not these 2 blokes. Such a pathetic mentality. There are two parts. First half: our site contractor - the guy who put the gate in was back logged so it took a long time to have a tech dispatched. Not thrilled about that. The second half was the actual service. David Burk serviced our gate. It appears one of our motors failed. He did an excellent job for us and had a new motor in one day after he diagnosed the problem. He then gave us a direct number in case we have any further issues. These guys tried to do the bate and switch with me. They had their tech come out and look at my gate and give me a quote. They quoted 3300 for a 400 double swing gate. I had to call almost 20 times to get them to come out and put the gate in. When they finally came to put the gate in they told me I needed a new gate that only they could sell to me for an additional 4000!!! Really yo-u want me to pay 7400 now instead of the 3400. Get real. This is the second time I've had them out to my house. The first time they were here they quickly fixed a faulty installation. Very good price and no BS. I had them out here last week to fix my gate after some kids who stole a car hit my house and gate while fleeing the police. David came immediately and gave me a great offer for repair. My gate service guys are so dedicated to work that they make the effort to call me every few month to check the condition of my Automatic gate. I commend them for their customer service efficiency. Whenever they come over to inspect my gate keypad and security gates installation they also check other parts of the gate. I called for a service repair and the technician scheduled an appointment. They missed the appointment. When I called to reschedule the next appointment was 2 weeks later. They missed that appointment. I called back and tried to schedule an appointment and was told that they would call me back and they never did. I decided to be persistent and would call about once a day and each time was told that I would get a call back in 5 minutes that they had to check with their manager. Not once did I ever receive a call back. I must have heard that 20 times (I can verify this with my phone records) This was the case for at least 2-3 weeks. I was even given the manager's direct number which I called and no one ever answered the call nor was there a voice mail set up to leave a message. I cannot believe the poor service and lack of respect that was given to me as a customer. If I could give them a minus star I would. I wish the owner of the company would call me so that I can let them know how I was treated. read more

We obtained three quotes and found Leo to be far and away the most patient and only estimator who asked good questions, and seemed truly interested in making sure our needs were met. Leo also seemed very knowledgeable and trustworthy, so we contracted with his firm. So my automatic gate wasn't working. Fine. I called Bay Area Automatic Gates and Fences. I asked how much it was to have a technician come out. I was told that there was no charge for a diagnostic and estimate. Okay. I made an appointment. They came out quickly. Great. When the technician arrived he realized that (who knows why) the gate wasn't getting any power. So he told me I needed an electrician that there was nothing he could do. Also fine. He then proceeded to tell me that even if that weren't the case, he doesn't work with high voltage, so he couldn't work on my gate no matter what (you are an automatic gate repair company, are you not?). Then he charged me $70. Now I'm pissed. I asked him why. He said it was labor. What labor? You found out the gate didn't get any power. That is a diagnostic. You didn't fix or replace ANYTHING. Where is my $70. And, judging by my receipt, this was a sub-contractor. I was not informed there would be a sub-contractor. Maybe I'm wrong, but my receipt says "Bay area automatic gates & fences by Michael's gates & fences" and says to "Make checks payable to: Michael's gates & fences." Sounds like a sub to me. I am so pissed, even a day later that I called the office. After some much running around with a receptionist, who seemed to have problems understanding me and kept trying to schedule another technician for me, I got a hold of Ben, who said he was the manager "today." He said he would look into it and call me back. Of course, he never did. I will never use this company again. I suggest you don't, either. read more

I don't know how this company works but my understanding is that they use subcontractors . So my automatic gate wasn't working right after the rain storm so I go to yelp and found them . I set up aptmnt and this guy named Tom shows up , he kinda plays with operating machine and tells me there's problem in circuit board and it's gonna be $1400 to fix it , so I ask him wats wrong exactly , he Says he will take circuit board to some laboratory and get it diagnosed , he's got thick accent , seemed like he doesn't know wats he Doin but just wants money so I told him I ll think bout it . This company called me again and I told them bout my experience with inexperienced Tom and requested to send somebody mature and experienced so they sent another guy with same name Tom who is same age as Tom part1 , he said same thing that circuit board capacitor needs to be changed and will cost $1360 . Not that I don't have money but I hate to be ripped off by these young kids with thick accent . I told him I ll discuss and let him know , I called diff company "centrAl California ornamental iron " in hollister , their tech came in diagnosed the problem with the gate sensor and fixed in 20 min for $135. So basically these guys were just tryin to make quick buck from a gate naive person like me guess wat they lost both the chicken and the golden egg. Even if I paid $1400 to them to fix the problem it won't do any good because problem will still not be fixed as they don't know wat they doing . I totally agree with Julie S's previous review! I'm not going to explain my whole ordeal w/Tom but here it is in a nutshell! He's like the middle man for all the jobs he said he can do. Back in November, While Santiago "good guy and very knowledgeable" was fixing my estate gate(which I overpaid to Tom, but don't know how much Santiago got), Tom told me he can remodel my kitchen also. I asked him if he was a licensed contractor but he didn't respond. I mentioned that I'm going to replace the asphalt driveway for the 5 homes that's in our community. Then he said that he can do it also. I asked him how much. He looked down the driveway and said around $200,000. Huh?! I said, don't u want to measure first. After he measured with a regular tape measure, he said $220,000! I was laughing inside. Two professional licensed companies already gave me a bid for $52,000. I don't mind paying for good work but I hate getting ripped off! Unfortunately, I feel that anyone dealt with Tom, did. I love yelp, but unfortunately Hustlers can use it to their advantage. They installed a redwood fence at my elderly mother's house for $4800. They didn't replace the gate post, which they were supposed to, I guess they didn't want to remove the existing gate, which was new. Instead they just put another post about a foot away from the old post. Problem One is the old post was for the old 6 foot fence. The new fence is 7 foot this left a huge gap on top of the old post that's visible from both sides of the gate. Problem Two is the plumb of the old post and new post don't match. There's so a 6" angled between the last fence board and the old post. They should have at least cut an angled fence board to fill the gap. I called, emailed, messaged them for months he always said he'd send someone to fix it and I'd wait around but nobody ever showed back up. Problem three is they quoted the price for 76 feet of fencing. I just measured and the fence is only 64 feet. Double check any measurements they give you yourself. read more

Overpriced seems to be a theme with this company but I had no idea until I had to deal with them myself. My gate isn't working so I called these guys for a diagnosis. The guy came in an empty Ford 450, At first I thought that he needed the truck for his tools, but nope, he didn't even get out any tools to do the diagnosis. What's more ridiculous was that, he, the professional, couldn't find my keypad...which was located where all keypads are located, on the side of the gate. Once I showed him the keypad, he looked at it for 2 seconds without checking anything else, not even looking at the operators or anything, told me that I needed a new keypad, ok, sure. He ended up giving me 2 quotes: the first one is a keypad with 5 programmable codes, which is $750, the other one was with 100 programmable codes, which was $1125. So I looked up both models after he left, they were by Liftmaster. The first keypad was $138 retail, the second was $144 retail. Wow, what!? This is the definition of getting ripped off. So I ended up purchasing the part online and called in a local garage door and gate company, and the entire job, part plus labor, was $275. I don't think this company realize that internet exists now and all the prices, both parts and labor, are all available online. Please everyone check prices online first before hiring this company! You'd be surprised, and grateful, because this is what Yelp is for. read more

I'd recommend this company to my friends. They gave a quote and stayed within it. We've had a few glitches with the closing sensor beam (several other construction workers still on site) but the Sales Rep Nicolas has helped troubleshoot as well as make physical adjustments after the sale, after the installation. The control circuit board for my 30yo Door King system stopped working. I got a few quotes to replace the board with the latest version that were over $4000. I would still have the 30yo motor, etc. Bay Area Automatic Gates gave me a significantly lower quote to replace the whole system with a new LiftMaster system. I have a very finicky electric gate. With the huge rains, it was malfunctioning repeatedly. Ben drove all the way out to my place in Forest Knolls in West Marin within two hours of my "emergency call" and got me going again, with the caveat that I might need a new receiver. He was so right! After another couple of big storms, my receiver died, and once again, Ben trekked out with new receiver in hand. Got my gate going, new clickers and reprogrammed my car buttons and the keypad at the entrance. Very reasonable pricing and fantastic service! Can't recommend them more highly! read more

It was really great experience with David's service. First time I called to get an estimation, he came in second day. His quote is definitely better than other 3 vendors I called before him. He also provided good solutions I have been looking for with recommended options. After we agreed the design and plan, he ordered parts and everything done on time even without deposit. The whole project took him about 2 days, I didn't need to call him to check status and schedule. He finished sooner than I expected. Even after it is all done, we find some system glitches, he came at his earliest time to fix the problem. He is the person always response to your call and work diligently on site. We were having problems with our gate getting stuck open or closed on hot days, and had tried calling 2 other companies that were totally unresponsive. I was at a loss. Thank God I called this company!! David came out the next day, told us exactly what we needed and explained why, and had the whole new gate opener installed and ready to go in a few days. When we had a minor mishap later, he came back out 90 minutes later and had everything running smoothly and perfectly.
