It takes a lot to impress me; I've worked in the fitness industry, and have a plethora of figure &…read morebodybuilding competition under my belt. But Jo is in a different category. She won't shout in your face. She won't beg you to come to do your workout. She won't nag you if your cheat meal turns into a cheat weekend. You'll work with Jo because you're excited for change, and she'll make that reality. I'll never forget: One of my first conversations with her, included talking about the concept behind Paleo and what's involved (including the costs) behind completing an Iron Man. Her emphasis isn't based on fluff or the latest 'get fit' tactic -- she's to the point, which is exactly what I love in a trainer and coach. Her no-nonsense approach is backed by science, education & personal experience. During my last workout with her, I asked her if I could do bicep curls. She looked at me, and said, 'why?' - Hm. Good question. Instead, we did 3 rounds of Burpies, Kettlebell overhead squats & military pushups. Did I get more out of those 10 minutes, than 3 sets of 12 of bicep curls? Hells' ya! Did I love every painful moment? Hells' ya! I'm down 2.5" from my waist, since working with Jo 3 weeks ago! And I was working out consistently 5-6 days a week prior to meeting with her, and saw very little results, and doing fasted cardio 3x's a week - I can barely believe the results myself. If you want change, Jo is the one to contact.

I've known Jo for about 6 years now. When I first met her, it was to get in shape for my wedding,…read moreand before we started working together, it had been a VERY long time since I had seen the inside of a gym. Jo worked with me at my pace, and modified my workouts as we went along and as I became more competent with the exercises. She always made sure I was in proper form and was able to knowledgeably answer the hundreds of questions I had about exercising and meals. She was also able to modify my workouts through my pregnancy to ensure that I wasn't putting any excess strain on my body. Jo is there when I need that extra push through those last few reps or when I need that extra motivation to get my butt out the door and workout. She is a great balance between keeping me accountable for my workouts and eating, but also supportive when my meals or workouts have slipped. I would strongly recommend Jo to those who are just starting out, and to those you have been working out for years. You won't find a better trainer in the city!

I have been coming to this location since last August and have tried the group fitness classes,…read moreprivate sessions with a personal trainer and the cardio machines. I found the group sessions very refreshing, even the 6 am sessions, lol. Private sessions with a personal trainer is beneficial if you want a program to be tailored to your needs and a trainer helping you with engaging the correct muscles. Ample Treadmills, ellipticals, steps, rowing machine, etc to log in your cardio workout. Changing rooms are well-maintained. The only downside is that if an equipment is out of order, it takes for ever to get it fixed.

James was invited into the club to help facilitate a charity drive and it was obvious that he lives with some disability/life challenge; yet, the entire staff treated him with such compassion, dignity, genuine kindness and in a very inclusive manner. I witnessed numerous members of staff walking up to him and giving him high fives, hugs and sincerely making him feel a part of the team. In a world when negativity, bullying and other unkind acts seem to dominate, what a nice thing to witness. It made my day and I've told this story to many friends and family. Congrats to the GoodLife Burlington Appleby team! Keep up the good work as we - the customers - notice these things and it makes a difference. Lastly and most importantly, all the very best to James. So brave! Dwayne Waldrop

The cleanliness of this gym is honestly unacceptable. I've been coming here for about three weeks…read morenow, and the same buildup of dirt and grime on the floors has not changed at all during that time. I even overheard a cleaner say there was "no point" in washing the floors because people come in with dirty boots--which is concerning and not an acceptable standard for a paid gym facility. The washroom doors are visibly dirty, the machines look like they haven't had a proper deep clean in a very long time in years and the mats upstairs are especially bad. There is significant debris stuck between them, and it's clear they've never been lifted and cleaned properly. For the cost of membership, basic hygiene and routine deep cleaning should be expected. At the very least, cardio machines should be properly cleaned out on a regular basis monthly should be the bare minimum. I'm not sure if this location is operating on a lower budget, but members are still paying full price and deserve a clean, well-maintained environment. Other locations (like Vega) clearly have higher cleaning standards, and this gym would benefit from adopting the same practices. If anyone knows who to contact about these concerns, please comment.

A nice thing about being a YMCA member is that you can use other YMCAs around Canada - and maybe…read morearound the world, and get complimentary use - even if it's not part of your direct Y's association. At this one, they are not part of YMCA GTA, but another (with Hamilton I think). Regardless, I could still use it. To be honest, it's not the most impressive place and is smaller than any GTA location I've been to. There's no indoor track, the pool is smaller, the workout area is smaller. Regardless, there's still lots to like about the place. There's still lots of value. I looked at the cost of the local Goodlife, and this is priced similar or even cheaper. So though the pool isn't all that big, they still have one which almost all other gyms don't. They seemed to have a full group fitness schedule which a lot of people would go for. They also had a few squash courts which even mine doesn't have. Though the weight/workout room wasn't terribly big, I liked the layout and that they seemed to purposefully keep it nice and cool in there, which I love when I'm working out. I would've rated this place 3 stars however based on the equipment that was there - however, they posted all the new equipment coming in for 2024, and based on that in good faith: it bumps it up to 4 stars. A big one was adding at least a couple proper squat racks which they were largely lacking. When I went on a Saturday afternoon, it wasn't very busy. It may seem like an odd thing to credit the place with; but people may want to keep that in mind when choosing a gym. It might have half the floor space of a Goodlife, but if there's even a smaller fraction of people using it, you might find more space and access to equipment here than other places.
