We called Gary to come and look at an old tub that needed patching and perhaps a re-finish. He responded quickly and talked to my husband. The appointment was made without delay and he showed up promptly. Before he came, he let us know that if the patching was enough to fix where there were shower enclosure holes, he would not reglaze a tub just to be reglazing it. That made me happy because no one wants work to be done that is unnecessary! When he looked over the tub, he agreed that it was in very good shape and repairing the area at the top of the tub would be fine. But before starting the work, he wanted me to consider not spending the money on the 60 year old oddly shaped tub, but to consider replacing it with a new shower.( We had already ripped out the old wall surface surrounding the tub, removed the glass enclosure plus the toilet nearby and were having some tile men come the next day- so the whole bathroom was already open) He waited while I talked to my husband about it, who agreed to reconsider the project. The upshot is that Gary did not do the tub but was more concerned that we did not throw good money on an outdated tub!! I was very grateful to him for suggesting a fix that wasn't quick at the cost of business to himself! He could have just come in to do the tub and left- and I had no doubt he would do very good work- but instead he gave his professional advice on what was best for us. Gary from Bathtub Rx is a true professional. I received a return call within the hour and after reviewing a few photographs of my tub, I was quoted a very reasonable price for the work. He followed up with clear instructions about what was needed on the day of the work. On the big day, Gary arrived on time and began to prepare the tub for re-surfacing. (My tub had been re-surfaced 25+ years ago by a previous owner and at this point much of the "paint" had chipped away. It looked terrible.) Gary's expert and very thorough prep work revealed an original porcelain tub that was actually in good shape. It is at this point where Gary's professionalism and integrity shone through. Gary was super informative, honest, easy-going, and attentive to arriving at the most cost-effective solution for me. My 1950s tub had been refinished some time ago under the previous homeowner and had begun to chip and fail. Since I may be selling soon, I didn't want to sink lots of money on something a new owner might gut-remodel, but I wanted it to look good. Gary worked with me, showing me as he finished each step, and we wound up agreeing to just strip off the old refinish, clean up the old porcelain, and add a nonslip mat and a gloss polymer coating. It looks SO much better and cost hundreds less than adding a new refinish. I don't even understand why the previous owner refinished it, because it cleaned up beautifully! If you think your older tub is beyond help I urge you to contact Gary before you start shopping for a new one. We had a 50 plus year old tub that was worn,stained, rough and chipped in a few places. Gary professionally cleaned it, filled in the chips and put a non slip coating on the bottom giving it a smooth clean finish saving the old girl from the dumpster. She's got some more years in her for sure or at least until we are able to do a complete renovation that was not feasible at this time. Gary was great. Our tub had blue stain from years of dripping, before we bought the house. I sent Gary photographs the tub, and he sent information on what to do before he arrived (for example, complete any tile work or plumbing changes). He also advised that, in many cases, only a thorough cleaning may be required, rather than the whole tub refinishing. For our tub, he only had to clean it, then apply a small patch of ceramic paint to cover the blue stain. He gave us the option to stop with that, or do the whole tub. We were completely satisfied with the results, and did not need the whole tub refinished. Now a month later, tub still looks great. Gary came into my house and turned a 29 year old shower stall into a brand new one. I had no idea what to expect or even how much it was gonna be. Excellent experience. I called to schedule a refinishing of my tub. Gary explained that he professionally cleans the tub first (required for a proper refinishing) then I can decide if I'm happy with just the cleaned tub or if I want him to continue to the refinishing. Gary did a fabulous job -- I would almost call him a magician. I had a tub that was reglazed about 6 years ago and it was a very poor job. Rather than do another deglazing, Gary "unglazed" the bad job and restored the tub to the original porcelain and it looks brand new. I just wish I had found him sooner.
