And the clear winner is the White Barn Candle Company. A part of the big conglomerate L Brands, it has burgeoned into its own entity separate from its subsidiary, Bath and Body Works. Why is the Barn better? First, prices are cheaper, bigger, and more clearly marked than at YC. For example, I'm looking for pierces up and down at Yankee, only to find a small-fonted sign at the end of the row where, after scanning the never-ending price list, find the candle I'm looking at is $27. At White Barn, almost every candle in the store is $12.50. And they're bigger. And, while they might have the 10 billion scents of YC, White Barn's candle fragrances are excellent. I found their Fresh Balsam Tree and Frosted Cranberry to be divine. You may want to go back to the lab with Campfire Donut. I'm in a sugar coma just smelling the thing. Oh yeah, and a novel idea: candles are burning in the store! Hello, Yankee Candle, light one up! And (not surprisingly) you can access the Bath and Body Works, which is right next door, without leaving the store. Raise the white flag for White Barn, Yankees, you've lost the war.

We were gonna try all of them, but as I smelled more and more scents, it was too much for me. I suggest not trying everything but just smell the ones you're interested in (maybe even like 30-40, but definitely not all). The process for making the candle was actually really simple. It took less than 10 minutes to make it, but at least 7 days for it to set. Also, make sure you can come back within 2 weeks to pick up the candle. Otherwise, it will be donated! The service was definitely 5/5! The staff were so friendly, and one offered to help us take photos at the end! Overall, I had a great experience at Wick Lab. However, it is pretty expensive (~$22 for one candle). Going there once to try it out was good enough for me, and I probably won't go back because of the price. FYI, make sure you make a reservation early if you plan to go there. I passed by the place twice before without a reservation, and unfortunately, it was full both times :( But it really depends on when you go. You can check the availability on their website.

A few things that could be improved: 1. There is no seating at the front with the exception of a wooden bench and had cobwebs all over it and looked like you'd get a splinter in your booty if you sat. So sorry folks, standing room only until you get some help. The bathroom wasn't super clean and seemed a bit run down compared to the rest of the place. 2. After we picked our scents, we noticed they were out of the cheapest choice (clear candle holders). We asked if they had anymore and they simply said "no sorry" and thus we were basically forced to default to the more expensive option. This was 430pm on a Saturday. It'd be nice if they were better prepared with stock, especially if they take reservations like we had. 3. Your experience building your candle will weigh heavily with your chandler that you receive. Ours happened to be pretty blunt and didn't smile much. The couple next to us seemed to have a bit more fun with their friendly and talkative chandler. BUT we had each other so we just made the best of it! 4. One of the gals working literally ate a sandwich in front of everyone behind the candle making counter. It doesn't seem they have a break room but that kinda of killed the vibe and experience. All that said, they really have something going here, I mean it's a great idea and fun little niche. My husband said when he went to pick up our candles the staff was much more lively and friendly so maybe they were just having an off day, who knows. We would definitely come again and give it another go! I'd like to bring my Aunts next time they visit! As far as the candles, they don't have the best throw. It's definitely not comparable to BBW candles type of throw but I think the fact that it was made by you it's just what makes them fun and special! The cold sniff smells great though!

I wish I had time to browse more, but today we were on a time crunch. We always see this place on our morning coffee runs to hidden peaks and always say we want to stop in and check it out. Today we finally remembered to lol. It's a very clean and cute shop. Much bigger than I anticipated. They organize everything well, so as not to feel cluttered. There were some items I was surprised to see, like Nike hoodie's, the hair extensions, and accessories. Seemed a bit odd, but who am I to critique another's side hustle!?... I bought 2 home oils (1 oz each) to try. Yuzu and gardenia. Not to be used on skin. It's a blended oil that helps it burn better when used on a warmer. My sister got two scents of oil roller fragrances. (Forgot to take a pic of those). It was about $21 and some change for all 4. I haven't tried the oils yet, thus the 3 stars, but I have a feeling I will be updating my review and can see myself coming back to try more items since I am always next door for my coffee or chai tea fix.

The space inside is open, brightly lit, and very clean. The two associates working were both very friendly greeting me as soon as I walked in. They were keeping busy while it was slow by cleaning the shelves of the shop. Mary & Mary stocks different fragrant oils and diffusers. The carry some very pretty flower diffusers that light up--some by being plugged directly into the wall and some plugged into the wall via a cord. These are for the scented oils that are not water soluble--not the oils you would mix with water in a water based diffuser. They do carry some essential oils that are water soluble, but I recommend talking to an associate to be sure you're getting the right oil for your diffuser. This shop also carries various soaps and lotions. I liked that they carried some products that were Rainforest Alliance Certified (products from farms that have met certain comprehensive environmental, social, and economic criteria). From what I could tell all these products were made with mostly natural ingredients. Besides oils, soaps, and lotions, the shop also carries some other items like sunglasses, purses and bags (I saw the most amazing purses with the Obamas on them), and jewelry. I decided to pick up a bar of Patchouli oil soap while I was there. I'm a sucker for patchouli products, and this one was made with essential oils, 98% naturally derived ingredients, and didn't have any artificial fragrance / color. The soap is also cruelty free and packaged in recycled packaging. It's currently sitting on my desk so that I can occasionally pick it up and smell it as I write this review, but I look forward to trying it out. Overall this shop has some fun items that will likely be most loved by women (I foresee 87% of women liking this shop), democrats (see: Obama hand bags), and environmentalists (basically everything here is environmentally friendly)--if someone in your life is all three, then this is a must stop shop--but I think this is also just one of those nice little gift type shops that you can go in and browse because there are some different items here that I don't think you'll find at very many other places.
