Normally, I choose to withhold reviewing a restaurant until I've had multiple visits- gives one a chance to look at the restaurant as a "process" rather than as an event. The exceptions are a product of the the extremes: extremely good or extremely poor. In this case, I'm really sorry to report that our meal was extremely poor. Our visit was for lunch, and how I wanted this to be good, authentic Thai. We ordered the Penang Curry, and I ordered the Phad Thai, both with chicken. And as I have a pretty good tolerance for heat, I asked for it to be 5 of 5 stars on their heat scale As a appetizer, we were brought a cup of a very bland (I'd call it chicken stock if it had more fat in it) chicken broth, that contained a couple of pieces of white meat chicken and a sprinkling of horribly over cooked rice. There was no Asian accent to this at all. Bland to the point of failure. Next, we were brought out a pair of Thai spring rolls. The consistency of the filling suggested that they had been frozen solid, until immediately prior to deep frying. This also produces an oily texture to the filling, while a crunchy exterior. And that's what we had. Next came the mains. My girlfriend had asked for a 3 out of 5 stars on their heat scale, and what she was served was a bland 0 (nada, zip), and my Phad Thai was the same- but I had asked (and confirmed with the waitress) 5 of 5 on their heat scale. Mine was the same, no heat and essentially no flavor either. We asked for the chili garlic sauce, to get some taste and some heat. The bottom line was our dining was less than satisfactory, and in fundamental ways. Hence this warning. If you're looking for even marginally competent Thal food; keep looking, as you won't find it (based off of my experience) at Basil Garden. read more

None of the food looked like any Thai food I have ever ordered in my life. Needless to say it didn't taste good either. There was a cock roach crawling on the window ledge which went and hid behind the bench. The best part of the meal was the banana desert that was served. After driving by this place for 4 years, first visit proved well worth the trouble. Dinner was far above average in terms of quality, freshness, quantity and flavor. 5-star heat ordered was tolerable yet did not mask the savory flavors. Dined on small house salads with peanut dressing chicken satay, special order Phad Thai, containing shrimp and chicken; and shrimp with vegetables and sweet basil (kra prow), accompanied by ice-cold Singha beer from Thailand. Environment is small, simple, clean, and busy. Price was surprisingly reasonable, significantly less than comparable Thai restaurants I've visited. 3.5 Really I have eaten here at least 30 times (mostly take-out), and the food is consistent. I like the Pad Prik Khing and Spicy Basil. They do spicy brown / basil sauce better than most. The Phad Thai and curries are average to a bit bland. read more

I can't believe this place doesn't have more and better reviews. I had the best Massaman Curry I've ever had, spicy level (3 out of 5) held bold flavor enhanced by spice instead of being overpowered by it, as often occurs. My husband had their shrimp salad, which was wonderfully flavorful and spicy. This restaurant is a little hold in the wall, easy to miss in a town of big chain restaurants, but we are very glad we walked away from the hour waiting list at one of those to try this little gem! If we lived here it would become a local favorite but we are just passing through. Yummmm...as I'm writing this, waiting fir our check, the waiter brought us little fried banana wraps and dipping sauce. A nice unexpected treat! read more

My wife and I had a wonderful dinner on our first visit to Basil Garden. We started with the Crab Rangoon that were very tasty.i had the shrimp pad thai and my wife has the chicken fried rice thats both amazing. The PT had decent size shrimp and the dish was very flavorful and not at all dry. My wife's fried rice was the best we've ever had. Salad's with peanut butter dressing and tiny fried banana desert that's wonderful were included. Two dinners an appetizer and one soda was 30 dollars. The young man that serves was extremely pleasant and attentive as was a woman that may have been the owner or manager. Even opening our door for us as we left we'll certainly return soon. read more

First off, I don't like Thai so I'm bias on this but... For being a hole in the wall, the place was pretty well put together. Maybe taking some stuff off the walls and fresh paint would give the place a "cleaner" look. The service was really good and friendly. I ordered Pah Thai (since it's my safety net) and it was blah to say the least. My friends didn't think the food "wow"ed them either but it wasn't gross or anything. Overall I wouldn't recommend it, but I would never recommend Thai unless it's Toi in Los Angeles. Even someone like me could eat half the menu there. Should of went for Cuban. :( read more

This place has never served me a bad dish. From the crab rangoons to the green curry. You give how many star 1-5 on how spicy. The couple that own the place are just too cute and nice every time. Great hospitality! No need for happy hour here because large hot Sake' is only $5. Come eat on their newly redone Porch or get it to-go and enjoy at your house. I really hate to do,this but I want to warn people, don't spend your money here. We have had a lot of Thai food from the Pacific Northwest and know good Thai food. We ordered three dishes with the intentions of taking some home for leftovers. This food was unrecognizable, never seen Thai food that looked like that or smelled like that. Did not take a bit home and very little eaten. Would never go back, atmosphere was dingy. Service was good. Have to try something else. read more

TL;DR: Great service, decent food, need to tell them if you'd like it spicy, try the fried banana. The fourth star is essentially for the attentive service and how sweet, accommodating and warm the staff here are. They're clearly earnest people who value the business you give them: although they were short-staffed and close to a full-house, I didn't find myself miffed at the service or speed thereof. Additionally, the food was fairly good. Of our soups, the Tom Kha was a clear winner, whilst the Tom Yum wasn't too bad either. The Tofu Namsad salad was excellent and tangy. The green curry and spicy basil were good, but nothing I'd write home about personally-- although it is fair to note here that my standards for Thai food are very high. For dessert, we had the fried banana, which was absolutely fabulous. I'm not a big fan of big chunky pieces and ice cream; so their thin, not-too-sweet and well crisped version with a light milk-based dipping sauce was exactly what I wanted. I had a Thai iced tea which was ludicrously tall (not complaining) and could have done with a bendy straw (especially for vertically challenged people like me). I will advise anyone who likes their food spicy to note that the spice scale here is not the same one Thai places in NYC use. I'd suggest ordering a few notches higher than you would typically if you're not local and looking for hot food. That said, inadvertent eavesdropping revealed that most of the Caucasian guests tonight thought what I found totally not-spicy was pretty well-seasoned, so use your own discretion. read more

I had heard so many good things about this place so I decided to give it a try. I love curry, and have had it at other places in town, but my normal "spot" was closed. I ordered Penang curry with chicken and the satay chicken appetizer. Picked it up and brought it home, first impression, smelled really good and it was piping hot. Started with the satay, the chicken was, ok, no flavor and a tad dry. The sauce had zero flavor and was very watery, at other places it's a pretty thick peanut sauce that has a little spice to it, this was so bland I threw it away. Next up, curry... their was a lot of chicken and a ton of peppers, almost too many but I worked around them. I put it over the rice provided and sat down to eat. Again, VERY bland, no flavor at all. Like none. Not even any spice, non existent, which is unusual for a Thai place. The curry was watery, almost like a brothy soup, I couldn't even keep it on the rice, much less the chicken and veggies. Overall, I won't be going back, way to bland and zero flavor. read more

I haven't been here for that long but I did come from a city where thai food was every other restaurant on the street I lived on. I went out of my comfort zone, got a red shrimp curry with rice and was really blown away. Looked great, tasted great and there was more shrimp and ingredients than curry sauce. I'm going to start by saying that the woman and the staff there are super nice, and I would give them another try. This was my first time there, and I really wish that I could say that I loved it. It was not great, but it was good. I had the Pad Thai with duck and I wish that I had not done that and instead had it with chicken. I don't know that the duck was fresh. The Pad Thai just okay, it was missing something or wasn't fresh. I don't know, maybe just not my flavoring. I also had the green curry with chicken. The green curry was good. I actually liked the curry flavor and it had plenty of chicken, red bell peppers, bamboo, and peas. I had it with some brown rice and would definitely have it again. I wish they had yellow curry. Placed a to go order, got the Pad See Ew. At first I was a little concerned when I walked in and heard the whole kitchen staff speaking spanish. Come to think of it, I didn't see not a single Asian employee....and it's a THAI restaurant!!! I typically frequent the Feroe Ave. location. The owner, Lucky, knows us there and she's very personable, friendly and funny. I went to this U.S. 1 location for the 1st time. Pros: the food was AMAZING- the panang curry was on point. A delicious and full helping of veggies and shrimp. I had enough for leftovers. I had a second meal when I went home. The spring rolls were fresh and packed full with veggies. The crab rangoon was full of flavor- probably the best rangoon's I have ever had. I was very satisfied with my meal. Cons: The menu was grimy- I regretted that I didn't have hand sanitizer but a piece of food fell out when I opened it. I literally was the only person in the restaurant and I had to flag down the hostess to let her know I was ready to order. I was seated but I waited about 15-20 mins for her to walk by. I asked for a number #4 for spiciness and I didn't get any spice in my food. She asked which dressing I wanted, twice, so it made me think she wasn't paying attention when she took the order. Considering that the place was empty, I would've expected decent service. Again, the food was good so I would return but probably at my usual location. read more

I was down in Florida just recently when we made a stop one day to this place.. This restaurant is tucked away in a little spot that you would never expect a good restaurant to be. Try the satay for an appetizer, they have a sweet cucumber sauce that I'm dying to find a good recipe for. The pad thai is excellent, the 5-star heat isn't too bad, not so overwhelming that it takes over the dish, and I loved the red curry I ordered. The prices are reasonable. If I lived in the area, it's definitely somewhere I'd eat more often, it's a shame they don't have places like this up in Delaware. Also they brought out my white rice in a little heart shape! This place has been around for awhile so you know it's good. The curry is hands down the best curry in town. We bring friends and family here and they always love it and the prices are good. Tom yum soup is yummy too! Salads are fresh. I also enjoy all the Pad Thai dishes, but I think the noodles are a little thicker than other places I've been to. I have been coming here for several years. While the selection is not as diverse as some other Thai restaurants I've been to everything has been good. The ambiance is really beautiful and they have intricate wood carvingsfrom Chiang mai. They make little butterflies from carrots as a garnish. Regardless, I'm into taste and the Tom Ka soup is exactly what I live for.Parking can be tricky but its worth it.Just over the Roosevelt bridge and they also own a place in Palm city, which is also good. read more
