This pub was a favourite of mine and a friend, we'd sit here for hours drinking £1 bottles of lager and playing pool, whilst flicking through the jutebox. The Stage Door is possibly the smallest pub I've ever been in, but that doesn't detract from it's charm. A pub with a focus on rock music and the alternative scene, the majority of people here are very friendly (some odd characters though!). I'm afraid I haven't been to this place in many years, mainly due to being more into a different music scene now and living in a different city - although I have to award only 3 stars due to my last couple of visits there haven't been as great but tastes and attitudes change don't they? Still a little gem of a pub, I hope it hasn't changed much.

I love this pub!…read more There;s been plenty of time that we've been to see a band who've not been as good as we hoped and we've ended up back in the stage door, and had a much better night! Staff are friendly, welcoming, and very funny, as well as serving very quickly, so you're never stuck waiting for a drink for ages even if its busy. The atmosphere is always happy and light, so you can pretty much perch on the end of anyones table without them getting annoyed. Good range of spirits and liquers too, although it does lead to some dangerous nights of shot droppingmy head hurts just thinking about it!

Varsity in Stoke-on-Trent is in Hanley, the heart of the nightlife in this city…read more I went on a Monday night as Mondays in Hanley are Student Night, and ofcourse the prices are reflective of this. Most drinks from what I could gather were only £1, but I believe this was on the basis of having a Varsity card which was provided on entry. The drinks weren't cheap in terms of quality however which I found quite surprising due to comparable bars elsewhere. There wasn't much of a queue either and the bar wasn't understaffed. Going in initially, the venue seemed packed, but it wasn't as bad as first feared and we actually managed to get a table. The chairs are comfortable tub-style ones, with sofas every now and again. Running along the window are big tables with big sofa-style benches which fit three people either side, four people at a push. The toilets are situated upstairs and the men's were relatively clean and well kept. Tables and the bar were cleaned quite regularly so there weren't piles of drinks lying around from previous customers. I can only give Varsity in Hanley a 4-star review as I haven't given the food a go, and I haven't been on any other evening than a Monday, which is Student night, so it is unfair to give it my full support when I haven't had the full experience, so to speak.

During the day, it is a rather pleasant and relaxing place for some food and a mid-day drink if wanted. Definitely worth a visit if in the centre of Hanley as it is often overlooked during the day.

It's exactly what you picture when thinking about a proper pub! Came back after the match and had a pint with some local Stoke supporters who Introduced me to their house beer - Green Monkey Ale. Perfect way to end my day in Stoke.

Then went on to have a very bland, tasteless meal of steak with so called 'creamy mash' and vegetables that were rock hard. My friend had some sort of chicken with vegetables, which she also didn't enjoy.
