Its rural outset is a perfect setting to take in the views when it's warm enough or during the Winter its a great place to sit around the log fires dotted around the interior. Cosy and very comfortable interior attracts local regulars along with ramblers from the nearby countrysides to the tea-time families and groups. Great place. Warm welcome. Definitely worth trekking too.

Service on a Saturday night can be a little slow, but it's a small bar so really no more staff could be employed. Unfortunately they've recently buggered up the sound system, for some reason they decided to waste lots of money changing over the old Bose system, which was smooth as silk even when loud, to a system with cheap, tinny and grating speakers making it not as much of a pleasure to frequent. I've never known somewhere to spend money making something WORSE that it was before!

It's a proper pub/restaurant with a beer garden, proper English menu (I had lamb's liver with mushrooms, the wife had braised steak in ale), proper drinks, proper clientele and proper staff who knew what they were doing. Junior even managed a peach and toffee sundae. A definite find if you're driving along the A34 near Congleton.

There are also a wide variety of (some extremely strong) foreign bottled beers to sample. Inside, the pub is well lit and there's no TV, juke box, pool table or other distraction from your beer drinking experience. The decor consists of press cut-outs, evidence of awards, bottles and pictures of the local rugby team. On the down-side, the cramped bar area gets crowded at busy times and the outside area isn't very impressive. This is the best pub in Congleton.
