Good service! Everyone was kind and welcoming. The restaurant is beautifully designed and has a great atmosphere. They played great music too. I also really appreciated that they offer several vegan options. I ordered the Creamy Blue Smoothie and the Banana Walnut Oatmeal. The oatmeal was absolutely AMAZING--perfectly cooked, flavorful, and easily one of the best breakfasts I've had here. It's the item I'd recommend to everyone. The smoothie was good overall, but the fresh mint was a bit overpowering and left an aftertaste for me. I think it would be even better without the mint or with less of it. I also appreciated that they use compostable straws, although mine was cracked when I unwrapped it. Later, I came back for lunch and ordered the half Brussels Caesar Salad with the vegan protein. The vegan protein (chickpeas and lentils) was delicious, and the half portion was surprisingly large. I also liked that the dressing came already tossed throughout the salad. One thing I found a little confusing was that the Brussels Caesar uses a vegan dressing but is topped with cheese, so I'd be curious what substitution is offered for guests ordering it vegan. The bread was good, although the butter was served very cold and was difficult to spread. A few suggestions that could make the experience even better: * Add a larger "Basal" sign above the entrance to make the restaurant easier to spot. * Install a large wall-mounted menu inside for easier viewing. * Keep tables and chairs wiped down throughout the lunch rush. The restaurant was spotless during breakfast, but by lunchtime several tables and seats needed cleaning. Given the price point, I'd expect a bit more attention to dining room upkeep. The staff were friendly and quick with the food service. It's a great spot to get a quick, nutritious bite to eat or have a sit down meal. Grateful to find Basal as we passed through Missoula. The delicious meal was nourishing as it was tasty. What made it extra nice were the people. Im kicking myself for forgetting the young mans name after asking him but he is in a couple of these pics. His attitude and willingness to give us a good experience was evident. He made helpful suggestions to add to the pesto rice bowl. Then this cheerful woman brought us our meal and coffees, turns out that was Julie one of the owners. Love this place! Finally there's a restaurant in Missoula with fresh, real food. So many times restaurant food is straight off the Sysco truck! This is different. Salad greens are fresh, clean and crisp unlike other places nearby. Good choice of salads. Great home made dressings, again not a Sysco bottom of mystery soybean oil-something. Basal is also sensitive to gluten issues if that's your jam. Service is friendly, quick. Great for a quick healthy bite. Fun to be in downtown, although parking nearby can be challenging depending on the time you go. Outdoor seating is fun for people watching. Enjoy! read more

After days of camping without, we were craving a great big delicious salad. Basal delivered in spades! The service was very friendly and attentive. The atmosphere in downtown Missoula (we ate outside) is very pleasant. We both had the beet salad, and the beets and greens tasted as if they'd been picked that day. Both of the dishes were mostly rice, with a few vegetables and pieces of the meat. $55 for two big bowls of rice, and no offer to adjust our bill for such a disappointing meal that neither of us finished. read more

Had a salad here once, and, you know, it was your typical 23$ salad. Maybe one third of a chicken breast on it, extra lettuce, barely any sauce, and one little sliver of bread served with a slab of rock hard butter as an accoutrement. But, whatever, that's fine -- we're all familiar with these sorts of places, overpriced "health food" that gets sold by the buildings chic looking interior. It's exactly what you'd expect, it's very American, and we're all used to it at this point. The food, however, isn't why this place gets one star. The food, is maybe like a 2 star -- the smoothies that cost as much as a cocktail, they'd maybe get like a 1.5. But, the real problem with Basal, the reason why I'll never eat here again, boils down to their specific choice of words on their menu. Under their description of their "Mediterranean salad," they list "Israeli couscous" as one of the ingredients. And I mean, it's just like, really??? Couscous is a very popular food, one that originated in North Africa, and is now found all over the globe. So, to me, the decision to describe it as "Israeli," is an intentional one. As of June 18th, 2026, I can think of about 75,000 or so reasons to not label something as Israeli on your menu, but, the owners of basal I guess see otherwise. And that, is why I'll never buy one of their horribly overpriced salads ever again. read more

They were happy to put our to go orders in our own Tupperware's. Save the Earth! And we absolutely love the bone broth! The strawberry rhubarb smoothie sounded tasty. Staff are very hospitable and helpful with food overpriced but my goodness, the place needs MAJOR addition of acoustic panels or clouds to damper the noise. People's voice volume at each table are all trying to compete with each other on top of ambient music fueling it. Was blocked entering by a shitzu or whatever type of small long haired dog inside that a woman had a retractable leash on yet was looking at something far from the dog with unawareness. I ate at Basal the majority of my time in town because it was attached to my hotel and also delicious. I travel for work quite a bit, and as someone who tries to be health conscious, it's hard to indulge every meal. Sometimes you want leafy greens and a nice bowl of soup. Basal is perfect for this. I've been eating mostly vegetarian as late and enjoyed every salad I had. The atmosphere isn't anything to phone home about, but the booths are comfortable and it's spacious. When I heard I was returning to Missoula, I knew I'd be leaning on healthy meals from Basal and more importantly, I found myself craving their salads versus it being a healthy but boring choice. 4 stars because at the end of the day it's a salad, but it's a very, very, satisfying one. read more

I love Basal. It's the only place I know I can get a healthy, nutritious, locally sourced lunch downtown. Their salads are made fresh. Their staff is always friendly and warm. I've never had to wait longer than a pick up time stated for an online order. If I am even more pressed for time, the bone broth is such a fast and yummy treat. Dining at a table is always a positive experience. It's on the pricier side, but I'd much rather pay for a higher quality plate than opt for what else is available downtown. 5 stars!! read more

I ordered a smoothie and americano and was shocked at the relatively low price for both - but I am from Seattle so take that with a grain of salt. Americano was appropriately strong and smooth. Smoothie (I got the almond butter and jelly) was obviously very fresh and had some great flavor. It was just south of room temperature - I personally prefer my smoothies a bit colder. I tried the half salad, buffalo cauliflower and it was fresh, filling, and delicious. A little skimpy on the cauliflower, but the salad consisted of mixed greens, cherry tomatos, celery, purple cabbage, croutons, gorgonzola, and a yummy ranch dressing. Basel is a cafe in Missoula serving healthy salads. We stopped here for lunch one day while on a national park road trip, while craving something lighter and healthier. The menu consists solely of salads, so there isn't much variety if you are craving a salad but your friend is not. The eatery is casual, and you order and pay at the counter before receiving your food. They have two or three outdoor tables, and more tables indoors. I had the cauliflower salad and was not satisfied at all with this salad. The ingredients seemed fine, but there was so little cauliflower or anything else that could have been filling in this. It was mostly just a bunch of salad greens. The pieces of cheese were tiny crumbled slivers. My husband got a chicken salad, and his also was very measly with the portions. The food that we ordered at Basal was fabulous! We ordered the curry stir fry, 1/2 salad, and roasted cauliflower soup and didn't come close to eating it all. Everything was fresh and portion sizes were large. The stir fry could easily be split! The service was quick and we enjoyed sitting outside in front of the restaurant.
