We discovered Five on Black on our first visit to Missoula in 2019 and it's a must visit for us whenever we're in town. However, it was my first time to this location. We figured it would be less busy than the downtown location and we were right! We arrived on a Friday evening to find a couple dining, but nobody in line to order! They serve Brazilian food, Chipotle style, where you select your base, protein, veggies, toppings, etc. Everything is gluten free and you definitely have to get the pao de queijo (Brazilian cheese bread)! We love Brazilian food, and have it all the time, and when I say this place has some of the best pao de queijo I've ever had, I really mean it! We buy at least a dozen whenever we come here! I highly recommend this restaurant! And especially this location over the downtown one because it's less busy and there's an actual parking lot in front! read more

I've lived in and been to Missoula so many times yet this was the first time I've been here. It was so refreshing and light and just the right amount of food. It's basically like a chipotle style ordering but the nice thing is that they have different bowl sizes. Everything I tried tasted good and I, of course, had to get the pao de queijo on the side. Neat idea to have a place like this. Healthy and light. Pretty refreshing. Traditional Brazilian restaurant is all about the meat. This one if I didn't see how they cook the meat, I still think they are a very nice salad bar type of place. The only thing that is really cooked is just the protein choose from beef, chicken or beef/chicken stew. The little cheese bites are the killer. Additional cost but really good. I see people dropping by 2-3 pm weekdays for a quick snack (small bowl). Pretty fulfilling. Clean, tasty and friendly people. read more

We found Five on Block on Yelp, and it was a good find. It is halfway to Lolo from MIssoula, and it was a refreshing addition to the 'bowls" strategy. It's in a large mall, so plenty of parking, and outside tables, or inside too. I made mine with the stew and brown rice, greens, and it was delicoius. Our other choice was the tilapia.. a little small for the rest of the bowl, but tasty. Overall, a good value, and a switch up from the regular choices. Very filling, spicy enough. read more

First time here. Food tasted pretty good. The cheese bread was mediocre, but bowl was better. The front end lady wasn't too helpful, even when I mentioned I was new. Rushed me through the options and wasn't very patient even though no one else was in line. Food was a bit overpriced, but it's covid so it's fair enough. This place is okay. Ate here three times, and very hit-or-miss. First time I came, the portion was very small and I figured I wouldn't come back. Disappointed and disgusted. This was my third trip to this location since it opened and my husbands first. There was nobody else in line to order and when we got up there we were greeted nicely, which I found pleasant. I had started my order of brown rice when one of the previous customers came up to the register. The woman that was helping us stopped mid scoop to ask her if she needed a Togo lid. that didn't bother me, but the customer wanted more chicken. So rather than wait her turn she put herself in front of us, which is bad enough, but the employee completely ignored us to fulfill this idiots order. I mean really? The employee couldn't have informed the woman that she would be right with her? On to the disgusting part.... Rather than opting to get the woman more chicken in a new container, she took the used, half eaten bowl of food and scooped chicken into it! AND touched the spoon to the half eaten rice!!! I realize that I may be more picky about germs than a lot of people, but I also know that it's cold and flu season and I'm 8.5 months pregnant. So no, I don't want this women's nasty spit in my food. Before today I had recommended this place all of my friends and family. The food is very tasty and a nice change of flavor for Missoula. Five on Black is the new and improved Chipotle. Now, that is very difficult for me to admit because I am a HUGE Chipotle fan, but they have gone downhill since the whole E.coli scare. Their salads are lacking their "wow" factor, the ingredient temperatures are drastic, and the portions are smaller. Enough about Chiptole... Five on Black is killing it as a "fast, casual Brazilian restaurant". It is similar to Chipotle's concept but with so much more flavor, spice, and bowl possibilities. I was super excited to find this place on the way from MI to WA. Pics and menu looked so good and I thought it was the perfect destination for our caravan of vegetarians AND carnivores to get something hearty and healthy and cheap. IT REALLY IS all of those things but not as tasty as I had hoped. My group came to the consensus that all of the ingredients they offer are great but not meant to be mixed and matched by amateurs. I'm not sure if they offer dishes other than the build-your-own-bowl option but if they do, go for one of those. I would give 4 stars because I really do love that it's cheap, healthy, and good for meat eaters, vegetarians, and even vegans, BUT right before we left I waited forever outside the one, unisex restroom, only to have an employee emerge and say the toilet was broken. read more
