I have always ordered sweet potatoes as my base with no problem. This time I was told I would have to pay extra. I went ahead and when he put the sweet potatoes in the bowl it was the tiniest portion I've ever seen. I asked for double knowing it would cost and I got a second miniscule portion. I then chose one more item from each category. My bowl was not even 1/3 full. I was with family who also got sweet potatoes as their choice for one of the items. They all had double the sweet potatoes I had and I supposedly had a double portion which I paid extra for! I felt the person who waited on me was vindictive in his servings since I didn't want a bowl half full of rice. What I had was delicious but I won't go back to the 5 on black by Brooks and Reserve. I'll stick to downtown. They are much nicer and more accommodating there! read more

Really good place for a customizable meal! The tilapia was surprisingly good, it was soft and tasted fresh. The plantains were very salty, but all the other toppings were nicely seasoned. The cheese bread was also just okay, tasted fine but they were a little hard. Overall, this is good place if you want to try out different options and flavors. Personally, I think that Brazillian food in the US is under represented, outside of the pricey all-you-can-eat buffets, which isn't how the average person in Brazil eats every day. Five on Black seems way more approachable, and feels like a Chipotle for Brazillian food. The concept of this restaurant is pretty neat and we decided to stop in for dinner. 1/2 Dozen Pao De Queijo ($5.50) - The pao de queijo has a decent texture, with a mochi-like chew, and the right taste - starchy yet cheesy - but they are served cold and not particularly fresh, like they've been sitting in the container the entire day. They should serve these fresh or at least at a minimum stored under warming lights. (3/5) Small White Rice Bowl with Feijoada, Collards, Toasted Cassava, Cilantro, Chimichurri ($9.75) - The feijoada seems to mainly consist of day old leftover meats, including the churrasco chicken and beef, mixed in with small pieces of bacon, and ground beef in a pinto bean and tomato stew. The white rice soaks up some of the liquid, making each bite still feel like you're eating stew. The chimichurri is very thick but tastes on point. They only add a small spoonful on top of the bowl so it's not enough to add much flavor to everything else. The collards aren't cooked that well - while they are pretty tender, they still exhibit a lot of bitterness. Flavorwise, even with everything mixed together, the food is kind of bland. It's like something you would eat if you're sick and don't want food that would upset your stomach. I love feijoada, and this is not it. (2/5) Small Brown Rice Bowl with Churrasco Beef, Black Beans, Cassava, Toasted Cilantro, Chimichurri ($9.75) - Starting with the meat - this is pretty much as far away from churrasco as you can get. The taste and texture is as if someone had taken roast beef, trimmed off all the fat, cubed and boiled it, leaving it overcooked, only slightly moist on the interior, yet dry on the exterior and flavorless. The beans are cooked fine, but are quite dry. The beans are drained so only the tender black beans are included without any of the sauce. The rest of the ingredients don't add any moisture at all and it feels as if you're just eating a really dry bowl of ingredients. I got the coconut curry sauce on the side. Let me tell you that you should not get the sauce on the side - without sauce, the bowl is just way too dry to eat. Adding it in improves things just a tad, but since they don't give a lot on the side, it's not enough to flavor the entire bowl. The curry essentially taste like a slightly spicy green Thai curry. Since most of the ingredients aren't spiced very well, there is a distinct lack of layered flavor. As some other reviewers state and with the other bowl, the best description for the food here is "bland". (2/5) Overall I came out full, but unsatisfied. I feel like Five on Black serves health food, maybe competing against those salad bowl places. This restaurant has such a great concept, but the food there is lacking. It's missing fat, it's missing flavor. I note some other reviews that state to use a specific combination of ingredients to increase the flavor levels. I don't think that's acceptable given that this is a Chipotle-style build your own bowl place. They either need to have recommended bowls, or make everything flavorful enough to stand on their own. I do not recommend eating at Five on Black, unless you're just looking for a unique experience and you don't particularly care about your food. Bathrooms - One unisex room in the back. Great place to grab a quick, healthy and cheap lunch. I got a small salad/rice bowl with the tilapia and added 2 cheese breads for an extra $1 each. Total was around $11 including tip. I was able to sit outside and people watch while I had my meal. The staff was nice and friendly too. read more

OMG, so happy we decided to stop at Five on Black on our way back west! This place is awesome, like a better version of Chipotle. It's a bowl place where you can pick and choose what you want. I got the Churrasco Beef and Sweet Potatoes for my grill/side options, which were great. I was worried the potatoes would be too coconutty, but they were not at all! First meal in Missoula! My partner had researched and found this place and it piqued our interest. We walked in and they were quite busy for a time when people do not typically eat. It was a hot day and the inside was even hotter. We ordered our bowls and I got chicken and my partner got beef. This place has a lot of potential but the meats were very dry and it was quite... flavorless... I did feel healthy though so that is a plus. My main advice for this place is that they need to add a bit more of the toppings since most of the flavors came from there. read more

I was intrigued by this place because it's a fast casual Brazilian food like a Brazilian Chipotle. It's nice to have that kind of option when for the most part you only hear about Brazilian steakhouses that are way too pricey for a lunch meal. When you walk in the set up is the same as in Chipotle. You choose your base, your meat, your sides, your sauces, and your toppings. Because this was my first time I didn't know which ones to get so I asked to get basically a little bit of everything. I ordered half chicken and half beef and all the sides and sauces. I preferred the beef to the chicken and I really liked the sweet potatoes. The collard greens were surprisingly really good and had more flavor than I was expecting. The spicy coconut sauce was delicious and I can totally see why it's very popular. I had a little of everything and everything was pretty good and filling. In the past food here has been good, but today I was appalled at the food and the service. Many of the food containers had not been turned out with fresh even though they were empty and until I asked the employee to stop scraping the container and get a new one he gave me old hard rice and flakey bits of collard greens. The employee clearly didn't hear my sauce request as once I got all the way back to work I found out he didn't even put ANY sauce on it!!! This is a Brazilian version of Chipotle. I was thoroughly impressed with my meal here. I would 100% go back here and recommend it to a friend. It is great if you are a carnivore or a vegan, it has plenty of options. The food is fresh, delicious, tasty, and healthy. The spicy coconut sauce was probably the best part of the meal. I cannot think of another restaurant that has this combination in a sauce but it brought the whole bowl together. The sauce went well with the sweet potatoes which were loaded with flavor. The chicken was cut into tiny chunks which allowed everything in the bowl to be mixed together. The chicken was well cooked, not a ton of flavor but no complaints. The cheese roll is a must, light, fluffy and good to soak up the sauce with your meal. The Chimichurri brought some heat and the farofa enhanced all of the flavors. The farofa is a must get as well as the spicy coconut sauce, and cheese roll. This place was well worth the 5 star review and the $15 for a large bowl. I was not able to finish it in one sitting but it was still damn delicious even as a leftover. read more

Fast, flavorful & fullfilling food! This is basically a brazillian Chipotle. When ordering you choose from a menu for options: a base, protein, sauce and toppings. You can also get some pan de queijo which is a very popular 'snack' in Brazil. The ones here was okay. It was more on the cheesy end than I prefer - but if you love cheese, I'm sure you'll like this. As someone who's been to Brazil...this is not an authentic Brazillian restaurant. I feel that they cater the food to match American profile tastes, but the essence of the flavors and combinations of ingredients are there. That is, the sweet potato, tomatoes, tilapia and mango.
