I saw that they'd opened, but the hours (Saturday and Sunday only) kept me from stopping in for a while. Finally, while riding my bike on errands I dropped into The Ranch when it was open and, well, this place is a find. Exactly what is "this place"? Being the first to review I am left to choose up to three categories in which to list The Ranch. This is where creative thinking comes in. First and foremost, it seems to be a place for art. There's artists works filling at least two buildings on site in addition to a sculpture garden filled with beautiful pieces. Secondly, I chose "Interior Design" as, aside from the art, the largest single tenant here seems to be The Still Collective. Housed in a large, airy space, The Still Collective does interior design and staging but what you might pop in here for is to purchase their unique furnishings and, yes, more art. A handful of small studios connect the grounds between the art space and the interiors space: art studios, ceramics, women's fashion, surf photography, and Hawaiian-inspired retail. All in all, The Ranch is a really cool place to pop in for a look-see, possibly as you make your way out to West Marin. The grounds are so serene and lovely that I hope they add live music and maybe even a coffee bar at some future point but that, of course, isn't up to me. Until then, I will no doubt make time to stop in occasionally, to see beautiful art in a beautiful space and enjoy the historic property on which it all sits. I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy it too. I mean: who wouldn't?

We stopped in but I didn't love that they had some candles or scent being piped in, so we browsed quickly, checking out the items and admiring the bitty handheld chimes that they honey was quite taken with and then headed out. At the end of the day it's a small space but if you have the time, definitely worth a look into.

AMFA exhibits, represents and has inventory of the finest quality post war and contemporary art by the most important and historic artists. I have not (yet) visited the physical space in San Francisco; my direct experiences are limited to the most prestigious exhibition venues. Specifically, the last couple of years at Art Basel Miami Beach and the ADAA Art Show at the Park Ave. Armory in NYC. In addition to the Gallery presenting remarkable examples by the most recognizable mid 20th through 21st century artists, it is also a launch pad for important, rising mid-career artists. Anthony Meier and his staff are approachable, genuinely courteous and knowledgeable. Given the opportunity, and if one listens intently, the Gallerists unhesitatingly discuss and educate with passion. AMFA is all about the presence of the art and artists. Anthony Meier himself is of vast knowledge and experience. And, through a recent acquisition, I've become more personally acquainted with the staff, all of whom are exceptional professionals. My personal dealings were outstanding on every level, particularly communications. I look forward to future acquisitions through AMFA and a visit to the Gallery's west coast exhibition space. My highest of recommendations.

And that big metal gate is a little intimidating. But this hidden gem is more than worth it. The Gothic Revival architecture is a rare treat in San Francisco. The exhibitions are diverse and interesting. The curator does a nice job of integrating the art with the interiors. And the woman working in the gallery (Kristin) is friendly and knowledgeable, offering useful information when asked, but giving me my space to wander too.

When I signed up for the tour, my ticket was somehow cancelled. After further review, I learned that this was the result of a clerical error. Unfortunately, it created a difficult situation for me, especially because it took several days to determine what had happened. My only intention was to feel confident that I could participate in an opportunity I had signed up for based on the stated requirements. I was recently offered the opportunity to join the San Quentin tour after everything was reviewed, and I truly appreciate the effort that was made to make things right. A special thank-you to Jennifer and Heather for taking the time to help resolve the situation and for attempting to make a difficult experience better. I also want to sincerely apologize to Lori if my concerns caused any unnecessary commotion. That was never my intention. I simply cared deeply about being able to participate and wanted to understand why my registration had changed. Ultimately, I appreciate the Marin History Museum for hearing me out and working toward a positive resolution. A few years ago, Smith Andersen North framed several lithographs for me and did a beautiful job…read more The lithographs floated in their frames; however, one slipped from its tape and dropped to the bottom of the frame. Smith Andersen North fixed the issue for me, no problem. Same issue happened again for the same piece of art. I left SAN a voicemail; no one returned the call. I emailed them; no one got back to me, so I scheduled an appointment to bring the art in for a consultation/fix. I got there today a few minutes early, called the phone numbers listed on the door--no one was there. I waited--no one showed up. I appreciate that times have been tough recently for small businesses and that SAN can't staff the way it used to, but they've got to run their business if they hope to have one. I'm done. The team catered the event around our desired team and were so helpful insetting up, supporting the children, keeping to time, and pivoting quickly when needed. The kids had a blast making an art project to take home, and they loved running around the amazing outdoor play space, which has a climbing wall, a house to paint, a mud kitchen, and even a fairy garden. The best part? I didn't have to plan anything except the invitations. The Art Barn staff handled all the activities and kept the kids entertained, which meant the parents actually got to relax and enjoy themselves, too. Highly recommend Art Barn! My daughter also loves their art classes, so if you're looking for a fun, easy, and creative experience for your kiddos, this is the spot.
