Poverty Lane Orchards - One of many apple trees. High quality!

Poverty Lane Orchards

My family was recently staying in a nearby part of Vermont for a fall weekend getaway. We added…read morePoverty Lane Orchards to the list of things to do on a beautiful day and we were glad we did. The orchards are beautifully scenic, a perfect outdoor setting. The staff were all passionate about their orchard and apples. I loved the store portion because they had additional apples that weren't available for picking. They even allowed sampling, so you knew which varieties you would like. There were a handful of choices that I'd never heard of. I knew I needed to buy a bag of the Ashmead's Kernel, they are right up my alley flavor and texture wise. We moved on to the "pick your own" portion. They gave us a fun tractor ride out to the trees. Once there, we quickly filled a bag with an impressive array of apples. I also appreciated that they didn't beat us over the head price wise. While more expensive than some store apples, they weren't as expensive as other orchards I've been to and they delivered a great selection! Highly recommend Poverty Lane Orchards! Just tried their regular non alcoholic cider, it's incredible! I don't recall ever having better. Bet their hard ciders are awesome as well.

Great experience! It was about a $1 a pound, and we walked out with a sizeable haul of all sorts of…read moreapples! Don't forget to grab a field guide to take you through the orchard! It will tell you what type of apple tree you're looking at, what the apples are good for, and what part of the tree those apples are found on. :) Also available: ciders, pumpkins, etc...

Stopped here based on a recommendation from Burt at Frozen Memories Ice Cream in Quecheee. Although…read moreat first we drove down to the nursery because that was the first sign we saw and if there was a sign directing you to the farm stand we must have missed it - the employee at the nursery was really nice though and redirected us backup the main street where the actual farm stand was just down the road. They had a large selection of fruits and veggies. A lot of them were label with either being From Edgewater or the name of the farm they were from. I didn't notice if everything noted where it came from. They also have refrigerator and freezer cases with local dairy and meat products and event local sorbet (blue moon) and gelato. We picked up some salad fixings, and was enticed into Edgewaters Strawberries and blueberries to make shortcake with...because they were so juicy looking. At check out they did take credit cards, and had boxes to put all of your purchases in for the car ride home.

Great plants, and generally staff were helpful but this one older woman was strangely obsessed with…read moreme while I was trying to pay for the plants I chose. She asked me my name, where I was from, wanted to shake my hand, and had little concept of personal space. She talked at length about her family, and gave lengthy details about their business, and made lengthy comments about the plants I chose. I did not want to chat or share my personal information and this angered her. What made this even stranger was she did this when other people were in line. It wasn't like I was the only customer there. I told her several times I did not want to discuss my name, where I was from or touch her or discuss personal details. She had a hard time understanding professional boundaries and did not respect my boundaries, or the fact I was a customer and did not want to talk about my personal details. I told her some people don't like doing that and she refused to accept that and demanded it. She countered with "Well, we here are into that here." I think perhaps she got confused and forgot I was a customer and thought in her own mind was marrying into her family or was somehow becoming a member of her family. I am not and have absolutely zero interest in any of that. I just wanted to buy a few plants. I would have given this one star as her behavior was completely unacceptable as people have a right to not share personal information or details, touch people or be touched by them. Yet she became belligerent, and condescending when I did not want to touch her or share my personal information. But - their plants are nice so I gave them two stars. Perhaps this rating will be enough to have a chat with their employees and stress basic professional behavior. I also wanted to let others know about this odd event so they can be prepared if it happened to them or choose it's not worth risking to have to deal with.
