He had a good combination of Isometric, weight, training, cardio, and help with nutrition to ensure that I would reach my goals. I've consistently said that he's the best trainer I ever had. Not to throw shade on the others, but to acknowledge his creativity, patience, and astute observation of my abilities. Somehow he could sense whether, when I said I couldn't do anymore, I was bluffing or I genuinely couldn't. I started working with Derrick this October, and have been pretty consistent on coming in 2 days/wk. When I started I was at around 17% body fat, relatively low daily energy and definitely not the best shape of my life. Today, I am down to 7% body fat in less than 2 months of working with Derrick and feeling better than ever. The training is a pretty good mix of traditional exercises and what I would best describe as "Derrick Specials". You will work muscles you've never paid much attention to and will definitely be a bit sore afterwards but it's all worth it. Just from the 2 sessions a week and following the diet plan set out by Derrick, I was able to max out the push-ups/plank in my Navy PRT and decrease my run time by over 1 minute. In these 2 months of working with Derrick, I've seen immense progress and have really never felt better in my own body. If you are struggling to find the right fit in DC, definitely give Derrick a try, I promise you won't regret it.

A very active lifestyle was taken away from me; put on some weight, lost strength and stamina, and confidence took a blow. I hesitated for a long time to hire a trainer because I was pessimistic that I'd find someone with the patience and empathy to understand my situation and explain how and why we'll workout the way we do. I scheduled an initial consultation which lasted a bit more than an hour. I asked a ton of questions and got quality answers, then did a a fitness evaluation. I decided to initially work with him 2x a week but after the first week, my fiancée got jealous, and Shawn was able to manage dual sessions with us while still providing quality attention. Oh, and he comes to the gym in our building to train us! Me- early 40s, avid soccer player and half marathoner pre surgery. She- mid 30s, very experienced yogi While we have different profiles and strengths/weaknesses, we had a common goal- improve *functional* fitness to make everyday movement more efficient, mechanically correct, and less injury prone. My primary goal is not the most jacked arms, fastest marathon, or most powerful squat, but rather be functionally fit to live a happy life. Tj be able to run a 10K instead of a half, to get back to soccer and tennis, and to be able to everyday things like playing with kids. He understood all of that and catered our workouts as such. The weight will drop, the times will get faster, and the fit physique will come back. If you want to work with someone who takes the time to listen, focused laser sharp on proper form, and manages you as a client rather than a workout session... then Shawn is your guy. I consider him part of my healthcare team, and often compare notes between him and my other specialists.

Carmen (owner/coach) focuses on quality over quantity, and it shows. Carmen and Kam (coach) put so much thoughtfulness into each workout and the overall program. Not to mention, they pay attention to everyone in the gym and their form, weight choice, etc. The coaches are always watching and will always offer insight to make you stronger. People have been coming to this place for over a decade, and I can see why. As a recent new member, I was welcomed into the community right away and already feel a part of the Ambitious family. It's a testament to what this place is - special! Ambitious Athletics is top notch, not only in the programming and the coaches, but also the gym as whole - the atmosphere, the equipment, the recovery room.
