    Hamburguesa

So I'm a member of this FB group Fatties Burger Appreciation Society and they have a total hard-on for Barrio Chino/Barrio Cellar's burger...and one particular blog voted it the best burger in Sydney. Naturally, I had to scope it out. Barrio Cellar opened about two weeks ago as the CBD location for Barrio Chino. It's a great location in Martin Place, plenty of space with moody lighting and decent music. There are some comfy chairs to sit on and the bar is a decent size. The staff is super friendly as well. In terms of aesthetics and vibe, this place is legit. So my friends and I ordered the Hamburguesa (you can get a double if you want) and wait to dig in. I have to say, my expectations were waaaaayyy too high for this place. I mean, the burger was pretty decent and not bad at all, but it would probably barely crack top 20 in Sydney for me. I liked the mayo but the meat was just a little too salty. YMMV

Heard about this place from a good friend- being a tequila and taco aficionado was keen to check it out, and see how it compared to its sister restaurant, Barrio Chino from the Cross. Started off with the ceviche tostadas- had one with kingfish and one with prawn. Both were outstanding! Reminded me of some of the best fresh ceviche I've had in past trips to Baja California. Definitely was not expecting it to be this level of quality. Although the food is much better than expected for a typical tequila bar, Barrio Cellar is first and foremost a bar. Huge array of Tequilas and Mezcals for your indulgence. The margaritas are definitely top shelf, mixologist level craft cocktails. I enjoyed my "stealth" margarita which had cucumber juice, as well as chili salt on the rim. Great joint to hang out after work, or special enough for birthday or Date. I fully endorse BC.

BARRIO CELLAR (Sydney CBD, NSW) Nestled underground on Elizabeth near Martin Place, this swanky bar serves a tasty looking selection of burgers and mexican. On Monday night all their burgers are $10 - I was in the hood so had to take a punt. I ordered the 'HamburgerUSA' beef pattie, cheese, onion, pickled jalapeños, chimmichurri mayo and chipotle mustard - which is served on the side. With the dim lights it was hard to get good pics but this burger looked tops. In fact you could smell how good it would be before it landed on the table. Super soft white roll toasted. Fluffy goodness a top burg bun. Pattie was out of this world dude. It was chunky, crusts were very nicely charred, inside was pink perfection, grind size chunky and damn it was juicy. I had puddles of heavenly goodness dripping onto my plate which I wiped back up with every mouthful. Words cannot describe how good this pattie was. Butter Bing baby! Cheese melted into the pattie like it should. Pickled jalapeños rocked hard and had an incredibly subtle amount of heat. Chimmichurri mayo again subtle but adding nicely to the overall flavour combination. I resisted the urge to add the chipotle mustard but I did try it and it too was amazing. One noteable thing was the use of coz lettuce - it added sensational texture. Something little like this can add so much. Gobsmacked by this burger, will be back for sure again soon. They don't come much more highly recommended than this. DUDE!

Pretty sure "I'm with Howard" wouldn't meet the minimum standard of Yelp reviews, so I'll expand a bit. The "Hamburguesa" was good. Loved that it was cooked medium rare. Loved the jalapeños (but would have loved more). Didn't really love the American cheese. Overall pretty salty. Needs bacon (the flavour & crunch, not the added salt). Loved the mustard dipping sauce for the fries. I'll be back, but for me the major draw card of this place is the awesome beer selection: Sierra Navada Hefeweizen, Negra Modello, Pacifico, and 4Pines Kolsh to name a few.

I had the Carnitas. The presentation was just as lovely as the flavors. Good Margarita, too.

We did not have a reservation, but they fit us in as a walk-in at a small coffee table with 2 ottoman seats. Not the most comfortable set up, but I appreciate the cozy atmosphere, almost like you are sitting in someone's very posh and dimly lit den. All the NOLA classics were featured, like Vieux Carre (no likey), old fashioned (likey), and hurricane. There were some twists on the classics as well. I liked the newer house specialties, and ended up having 3 drinks, more than I intended. We snacked on some popcorn chicken, which was nothing special, but very satisfying when hungry. We were also lucky enough to be there when the live jazz band played a brief set, which really set the mood. I took off a star because not every drink was a homerun, and the service was a bit too impersonal for a speakeasy. We had a different server each time. One of my favorite parts of going to a speakeasy is to watch the bartenders work their magic and ask them for recommendations, and if I'm lucky, maybe get an off menu drink. Not quite set up that way here.

The photos in the entry way were super cool. As we descended down the stairs, it felt like we were going back in time to the Roaring 20s. It was a Wednesday night, so the bar wasn't terribly crowded, though it was still busy. We grabbed a seat and browsed the menu. After a few minutes, no one came by so I eventually got up and ordered at the bar. I had to wait nearly 10 minutes before I was even able to order a drink. I don't know what the hold up was, but the service was extremely slow. While I was waiting, there were some drunk guys who were pushing the hanging light fixtures. This went on for a few minutes and the staff never said anything to them. It was annoying and extremely off putting. Once I was finally able to order a drink, I asked for a Martinez. The bartender could not understand me. I think I repeated myself at least three times. I guess the way I pronounced "Martinez" sounded like "martinis" lol. I ended up pointing to the drink in the menu before he finally understood what I was trying to order. I know I have an accent, but I didn't think it was that heavy lol. I will say that my Martinez was well made and tasted so good! My friend had planned to order a drink, but changed her mind after she saw how long it took for me to get my drink. Luckily she's a local, so she can go back whenever she wants. If it weren't for the long wait and the annoying drunk guys, this would have been a 5-star experience. If you enjoy craft cocktails and have patience, go check it out.
